Much like a warden inspecting cells, we’ve been combing through your comments, and here is a roundup of some common feedback we’ve received:



Better Stats For Paid Meals: Several players have noted that paying for meals should feel more like a hearty investment, offering more stats recovery than just the free bread—fueling you up for the next big hustle in Boulderton.



Steadier Stats, Longer Days: Some of you have pointed out a suggestion for character stats such as hunger, body and stamina to not deteriorate quickly, so you can navigate the daily rigors of Boulderton Prison.



Faster Focus Point Recovery: Some of you are looking for quicker Focus Point recovery or a lower 'social spending' to foster friendships with fellow inmates, in the quest to build alliances within the prison walls for your master escape plan.



Faster Health Recovery for Thomas: Many of you have feedback that you would like to see Thomas’ health and spirits recovering more quickly after an inmate brawl, as right now it feels as slow as a long spell in solitary confinement.

Your feedback and suggestions are more than just whispers in the cells; they serve as a guide for us ahead as we develop the game. While we may not be able to incorporate every suggestion, we are doing our best to find a balance between meeting your expectations and preserving the game's distinct identity and resources. We can't wait to unveil more of this adventure, and your support is shaping the journey every step of the way!

Each of them are important in their own way in addressing the needs of your character, and in order to truly thrive in these mysterious lands, understanding how to balance them is crucial. Get ready to strategize, innovate, and decipher the secrets of survival in Pathless Woods!

Hunger


Life in Pathless Woods starts with ensuring you're well-fed and keeping your hunger at bay. While wandering the lands, wild mushrooms or cultivated crops will be your go-to for a quick bite. For those who relish the thrill of hunting, animals can also provide a generous supply of meat. But whether it’s foraged fungi or fresh meat, here’s a tip for you - grilling them will boost their filling power! So, don't hesitate to spark up a bonfire and savor a roasted delight.

Hydration


Hydration isn’t just about quenching your thirst! Lakes and ponds offer a refreshing gulp, as such, positioning your home near these natural reservoirs would be a great idea. And when you are out exploring, it's wise to have filled water bottles on hand. If you are wondering how to get it, here’s a fun fact: Take down a Jaer cultist, and they might just drop one for you. The best part is they are reusable, ready to be replenished at the next water source on your adventures!

Temperature


Pathless Woods offers varied biomes as you explore more of its mystical land, from scorching fields to freezing mountains. Crafting appropriate clothing for your climate is essential should you find yourself struggling to keep your Temperature in check.

Sometimes, even clothes won't be enough to stop the elements, and that’s when your building skills and creativity can shine! Build shelters to take refuge from the weather, whether it's the blazing sun or a chilling snowstorm.

Spirit


A well-rested settler is alert and ready for challenges! Without enough Spirit, you'll suffer a Dispirited debuff, decreasing your HP, and Stamina recovery speed, and reducing your other stats by a massive 20%!

Setting up a cozy spot for the night, and getting some sleep is necessary to replenish your Spirit. Settle down by a warm bonfire, or if you have the materials, craft a firelick linen bed roll. It is warmer than a normal bedroll but be careful where you place it—especially if you’re near open flames. You don’t want to accidentally turn yourself into a chunk of charcoal!

Physique


In Pathless Woods, food isn't just fuel—it improves your Physique! Boosting your Physique stat not only ups your basic stats like Attack and Max HP but also lets you handle heftier furniture, equip stronger armor, and wield better weapons and tools to protect yourself. Plus, a higher Physique means more room in your belly, letting you go longer without grub. For a real advantage, diversify your meals and grill up those ingredients; it's about quality, not just quantity!

Navigating the intricacies of Pathless Woods demands more than just instinct—it requires a mastery of the vital survival metrics. From optimizing your diet for Physique to ensuring you're adequately hydrated and well-rested, each metric plays a pivotal role in your journey. Starveil - Vildravn
It has been a while and the keen eyed among you might spot we skipped a month. The simple answer is that summer got in the way and we took a bit of a break. But we’ve also done a fair amount of reflecting, thinking and work on Starveil, let’s get to it!

Sunny July & August

Let’s start with the most recent news. We took a stock of the current state of the game, and with the Next Fest hurtling ever closer, we’ve made the decision to postpone. It was not easy decision to make, but the reality is that we were not ready for the Next Fest in October, and each game only gets to participate in a Next Fest once, we don’t want to blow our chance. Instead, we’re really putting our noses to the grindstone, and are now aiming to participate in the Next Fest in February 2024 instead. This also means that our release will happen after February.

With that bit of heavy info out of the way, let’s take a look at what we’ve accomplished since the last devlog, outside of spending time with friends and family over the summer.

We have started working on our second map next to the Necroforge, called the Mycotic Grove. Check out these awesome enemy designs.



The Mycotic Grove is going to be a more open and definitely more fantasy inspired area with a different set of enemies.

Work has also been done on implementing a new UI look. UI is something that really ties any game together and it should not be neglected. Here’s a quick look at our skill bar, with some work-in-progress skill icons.



It would not be a good RPG without a large variety of skills and spells at the player’s disposal, so we made sure to expand the arsenal and added 11 more skills. Among those freshly added are skills like an AoE taunt, a healing station that pulses healing to nearby allies, a chain pull for the pesky enemies that always run away from you, or an adorable-yet-deadly familiar that shoot laser beams out of its eye.

We have also been experimenting with some other things like adding ambient sounds and more skill sound effects into the game, using a proper resolution so we don’t play in a small 720p window, and a host of tweaks, fixes and improvements.

Refocused September

Now that we don’t have the October Next Fest looming over our heads, we had the chance to refocus and prioritize a bit, and lay out a clearer plan for the coming months up until the February Next Fest and the Early Access release. For now, let’s take a look at the focus for September.

The first of the two big ticket items for September is finally storing player characters and their items and equipped skills in a database - no more losing progress on logging out!

The other big task we’re setting for ourselves this month is finishing up our dungeon system, generate some dungeons and fill them with enemies and new bosses to kill and loot.

Among relatively smaller things we’ve got some rebalancing on the public (non-dungeon) areas and some more UI work.

We’re also planning a larger playtest that we’d like to have before the Next Fest to see where we are, so stay tuned for that!

Speaking of staying tuned, the best way to do that is on our Discord server where you can chat with us and see the progress more or less in real time.
