We're just about recovered from Gamescom 2023 where Horticular was chosen to be part of this years Indie Arena Booth (as well as taking part in the official stream schedule!)
This was the Gamescom 2023 team outside of the Cologne Cathedral! From left to right: John, Mike, Matt, Robert, Dan P, Liam
Robert, the developer of Horticular, was on hand to showcase the game (minus a couple of days due to being poorly) along with the entire Slug Disco publishing team!
You can hear from Robert in this below interview he did with Mike - you'll have to excuse the lighting making him look like a crazy scientist!
Over 320,000 people attended Gamescom this year and I think I'm only just now getting back to normal, but I can't get comfy as me (Dan P) and Liam are jetting off to Tokyo in two weeks to showcase Horticular at the Tokyo Game Show as part of the Slug Disco booth!
If you're there we will have a new stock of Horticular pin badges for you to grab as well as a Japanese localised version of the game.
Over the last few weeks we've been working on a demo of the game, as well as a feature that will allow you to export and import your save game to make it compatible with the demo version of the game. We are very keen to make the game more accessible to everyone and to grow our community in order to gather valuable feedback and improve the game, and the demo is a step in that direction.
We've also been working on some localization issues and some user interface bugs.
We've also started work on a major update that will include a major change to the core mission loop, which we hope will be a fun addition to the game. However, it is still too early to talk too much about this feature. We will keep you updated on our progress over the coming week.
Have fun and best regards Defend Earth: Xenos Survivors Team
Additions
- Added menu for resetting, exporting and importing savestates from files (including savestates from prelude)
Bugfixes
- Fixed some minor localization issues - Fixed UI overlap in In-Game options menu
Today we're giving anyone interested access to the game's BETA branch, to preview the changes coming in season 2. To get access, follow these steps:
Go to your Steam library, right click the game entry and select properties.
Go to the Betas section, enter the code beta12345678, then hit the check code button.
Switch to the beta branch from the drop down menu.
You can freely change between the beta and live branches at any time. All cards will be unlocked while on the beta branch.
Aside from the changes from last week's post, what you can expect on the gameplay side is mostly changed players. There are too many to list here, and we'll leave you to discover them by yourselves, but here just a few from a high level perspective:
Nicola Jokeric passive rework
Joel Embiid passive and skill rework
Paszcal Siacam full rework
Dejonte Murrei skill rework
Upgrade many cards to legendary and reworked they kits: Tireze Macsey, Marccus Smarrt, LaMello Boll, Donatas Saboniz, Cabe Cuningham, Laurin Mackanen, Jared Alen, Dezmond Bein.
Partially added rookies from the draft
This not an exhaustive list, and we are not done with the changes. You will be playing on a development environment, and we will keep making changes over the next few weeks. Expect an update every Wednesday until the final release.
What is left to do:
We still have a lot of players to remove, replace or upgrade
Rarities for players are not final. Just as we upgraded many to legendary, and still have a few to do, many rare players will be upgraded to epic.
Salaries are not final. Our approach to salaries is that every player's salary is relative to all other salaries, based on a formula that assigns value to their attributes, passives and skills. Before we can do the final fine tuning for salaries, we need all players to be close to final.
Bot teams have not been reworked based on the new mechanics, players or salaries. They are the same ones as on the live environment. Same as salaries, this will be one of the final steps in the process.
Know issue: The tutorial does not work correctly as it's being reworked. Please concede the tutorial, after which you can play the game normally.
Gameplay HUD Changes
As Season 2 will also be our mobile release, we've updated the gameplay HUD to work better on mobile.
Increased the size of the cards on the board
Skill buttons are now aligned vertically on the right side
Bench buttons have moved to the left side
Box score button moved to the top right
You can reach us directly on the game's Discord server if you would like to provide feedback.
Patch 1.4.2 is live, with a small handful of big bugs fixed in the area of losing and duplicating Exiles. See the changelist below for details. We are not planning another patch between now and the first of our two content updates, still aiming for October. If some issues arise we’ll take a look at them.
One warning about the next update, version 1.5: this update will have new content and balance adjustments for the solar systems and procedural generation. Because of this and other technical details, when the update is applied any in-progress journeys cannot continue and will have to be restarted.
All progress you've made outside of journeys (game configuration unlocks) are unaffected.
We understand this is not an ideal situation, but due to the nature of procedural generation, the small size of our team, and general technical/scope details, it is unavoidable. We have spent a lot of time behind the scenes exploring and testing alternatives, but ultimately this is the cleanest solution for everyone.
We’ll be reminding folks on the Steam discussion forums and social media about the update going live.
The Changelist

Known Issues
In certain cases, restarting a solar system does not clear a Chronicle entry if you got it in that solar system. A fix for this is ready but for some technical considerations we are waiting to implement it later.
