RoboCo - robo_remily
Happy Friday, RoboEngineers!

We know it’s been a hot minute since our last devblog, but we come bearing exciting news! Some new parts have been added to RoboCo and we’re sure that they’ll add a spring to your next RoboStep!

What Kinds of Springs Have We Added?

When you think of springs, the first type that comes to mind is probably a standard coil spring that can compress or extend, like the kind you'd find in a ballpoint pen. In RoboCo, we refer to these as linear springs.* Our linear springs come in two sizes - small (1x1x1) and large (3x3x1) -- which can be resized to a length of 1x1x25 and 3x3x25 respectively. Similar to our large piston, the large linear spring takes up more space but is more powerful, capable of higher settings in its Properties panel (more on those later).

We also have a torsion spring. "Torsion" means "twisting" and is also where the term "torque" comes from. A torsion spring is also a coil spring, but with its endpoints set up to twist, store, and release rotational energy. You may recognize these springs as being used in a mousetrap or the mechanism that opens your garage door. In RoboCo, the torsion spring comes in one size (1x1x1) and, unlike our linear springs, it isn’t resizable.

Note that the springs are available right away in the Sandbox, but you will need at least 18 bits (at the time of this writing) to unlock them in the Campaign!

* Note: As the engineering enthusiasts reading this may know, "linear springs" aren't called that because of the linear motion when they compress or extend. They're called that because the coils are of uniform diameter and are a consistent distance apart. So technically these are linear rate compression or extension springs, but we simplified them to keep the name short and distinct.

What Can You Do With Linear Springs?

Now that we’ve gone over what kinds of springs we’ve added, let’s get into the fun stuff, like what players can do with them.

Our two linear springs have three editable properties - spring constant, damper, and resting point.

Spring Constant (aka spring rate or spring coefficient) adjusts the stiffness of the spring. The higher the spring constant, the more force the spring can exert to stay at or return to its resting point, as in Hooke's law.

Going beyond a basic coil spring, RoboCo's springs also have a damper inside them. This makes them more tunable for uses like vehicle suspension. The Damper property adds resistance, which influences how long the spring will oscillate around the resting point before dying down. The higher the number, the more resistance.

Resting Point allows players to choose what resting state the spring will return to when no external forces are applied. There are three resting states players can choose from - compressed, middle, and uncompressed.

What Can You Do With the Torsion Spring?

Our torsion spring has all the same properties as our linear springs plus one extra.

With our torsion springs, you can adjust the starting point in addition to the resting point. The starting point lets the player choose the spring’s initial state when entering Live Mode from Edit Mode. Players can either choose to have the torsion spring start wound, unwound, or in the middle.

We’ve Also Added Suspension Wheels!

Using our new springs, we’ve also added new left and right wheel constructs that give you some basic spring suspension! Suspension can help steady the chassis of your vehicle as it drives over uneven terrain, like when the top of a ramp transitions to a level platform.

Each construct includes a wheel, motor, and spring with some default properties. You may need to tune the properties or placement of the wheel constructs to feel right for your specific vehicle's weight distribution, but the constructs are a great way to get started or save time.

A Cool Application of RoboCo Springs

Need some more inspiration on how to utilize this new part? Our development team has you covered! Just…make sure not to show Bennet Foddy this clip. We don’t know if he’ll get over it.

RoboCo Updates Going Forward!

Cyber Strider - Reah Kane
After the unsuccessful early access launch of the game I decided to release the game from early access with this update.

Because the game is not going to have the intended amount of content the price will be reduced to reflect its new value.

Edit* made the main text more clear and removed the unnecessary sarcasm to avoid pissing off random people.

Changelog:

v1.064

Ending Added:
Added an ending to the game. It is extremely satisfying.

Content:
A new lovely enemy was added, may have something to do with the ending.

Mechanics:
Added the acceleration mechanic to directional thrusting.

Dialogue:
Added a few more lines of dialogue, one for the ending, and a few more to add some variety.

Fixes:
Fixed an issue where some player actions would remain active after the EMP wears off on them.
Fixed the game not saving the sector reached on death properly, resulting in weird comments by Ren.
Your Spaceport! - TheHafinator
This is the first minor update for Your spaceport. I suggest that you remove existing saves as they might have incorrect data stored. The saving/loading part of the game has changed significantly.

Things that changed:

Turrets:
  • Turrets now rotate even if the player has no ammo.
  • The player will be notified if they are trying to fire without any ammo.
  • Turrets can now be dismantled and placed back into the player's inventory.
  • Fixed a bug which would move some projectiles faster and others not at all.
UI:
  • Added the Delete Save button to the Load window.
  • The Manufacture window now shows the player what they can and can't manufacture.
  • The player can now directly switch between windows without having to close the opened one first.
  • Price charts now re-render immediately when loading from a save.
  • The last tutorial now doesn't show up when the game is loaded from a save.
  • There was a chance that some items in the market and the inventory would be displayed larger than the other items. This has now been resolved.
  • In the price history window, turrets are now grouped.
  • The player is now notified that they bought fuel and that the fuel tankers should arrive in the next minute or so.
  • Added colour indicators when changing utility prices so that the player now knows if the prices will hurt their relationship with other factions.
  • Fixed the display of partially researched technologies when a game would be loaded.
  • Fixed a tutorial bug which would brick the tutorial handler if the player used/consumed the item which was used as a display reference.
  • Fixed a bug which would display a faulty queue index in the research window.
Controls:
  • Added a hotkey for the camera to start moving towards the station.
  • Tutorials:
  • Added new "Move camera" to station tutorial
  • Added new Dismantle turret tutorial
Manufacturing:
  • Fixed a bug which would prevent the player from manufacturing if the game was loaded from a save.
  • Fixed how ship manufacturing would resume when the game was loaded.
  • Fixed a bug which would allow an incorrect type of trade route to place ship orders.
Ships:
  • Ships now correctly resume their previous activity when the game is loaded from a save.
  • Fixed how ship sleep time is calculated when saving the game
  • Fixed what ships do when they are docked and the game was loaded from a save file.
  • Each tanker can now carry less fuel 192 => 128
  • The wait times between tankers spawning have doubled.
  • Tankers now move 50% faster.
Inventory:
  • Fixed an item duplication bug which would happen when the game would load from a save file.
Audio:
  • Fixed how the audio loops. There shouldn't be any more random cut-offs.
Research:
  • Fixed a research bug which would accurately unlock researched technologies on the first game load from a save file, but would then completely remove all research on the next load.
Relations:
  • Buying fuel from a faction now increases relations depending on the amount of fuel bought.
  • Relation reduction when the player has no spare parts was reduced 10X.
  • Fixed a bug which would incorrectly handle active events when the game was loaded from a save.
Market:
  • Fixed a bug which wouldn't correctly show docked trader items on the market if the game was loaded.
  • Players' market items are now correctly displayed when the game is loaded.
  • Fixed a bug, which wouldn't colour player's items on the market correctly.
