2D Dogfight - tetrahydrofuran
In the 3rd level of the Chinese campaign, added the Type 63 anti-aircraft vehicle near the airport to the target that the player needs to protect (the actual difficulty has been reduced, you can still win this mission even if all the tanks and vehicles on the front line are dead)

In the 5th level of the Chinese campaign, an S-75 surface-to-air missile was added to player's team.

Update Notes for July 21 2023, 3D Update 0.5
This update is a complete 3d overhaul of all art assets and the in-game renderer, replacing the old 2D sprite-based system. Almost all sprites are now 3d models and all level chunks (used to generate the platform levels) have been rebuilt with 3d assets.

This change allows us to achieve the lighting and shadow effects we need going forward, especially as we add more content to the game including new ships, levels, and the upcoming new final sector. We did some tests last year with 2d lighting effects compared with 3d models and materials and it was clear that 3d was the way to go!

Note: gameplay is the same as before. Movement and physics are still essentially 2d, but the camera now has perpective giving us way more depth than the previous 2d parallax effect.

New Features and Balance
  • Added a small amount of inertia to player ship movement.
  • Weapon pickups now roll additional random stats when picked up during gameplay.
  • Picking up a device will now drop the previous device so it can be picked up again (there is a 1 second cooldown on pickup).
  • Double Damage module no longer applies to smart-rocket missiles.
  • Shield pod now blocks Beam weapons on regular enemies and turrets. Boss/Miniboss beams are not blocked.
  • Bounce projectiles no longer pick up the piercing module effect.
  • Decreased movement speed of Horizon from 30 to 27

Bug Fixes
  • Unlocking the Hydra ship now shows the Hydra Pod in the journal. The pod is also unlocked if you have previously unlocked the Hydra.
  • Collision from the player ship would sometimes not damage breakable objects in the level due to the order of collision processing.
  • Fixed enemy spline movement when scrolling stops.
  • Enemy beam color set to white when not doing damage after firing.
  • Menu buttons with screen fade now only respond to the first press.
  • Bounce shots are now killed when their target is dead or invalid.
  • Fixed rare soft-lock in AI Boss level when destroying trigger objects before scrolling has stopped.
  • Fire-Rate shown in the shop screen is now shots-per-second instead of shot delay.
  • Ball lightning, ionized-hull, and homing missiles now do raycasts against terrain.
  • When starting a sector, the credits text no longer count up from 0.
  • Background chunk generation at the end of platform levels now line up with foreground platforms better.
  • Enemies should no longer spawn near or after the warp gate at the end of space levels.
  • Electric items now target weak points correctly on the Pirate Destroyer.
  • Devices were previously called Special Items.

Side Effect - Daestra
Hello everyone! As I suspected, the Frost School was easy. There are 2 spells that have significant changes, and I took the opportunity to rework some that were bothering me.

My feedbacks
  • I didn't feel the change in mana cost for moving the pieces.
  • Being able to accumulate charges of electric ascension and water ascension is so cool. We can really enhance the quality of our spells during a game, and it's exhilarating.
  • The bypass spells still have an issue; they are weak.

Spells

Ice breaker (now Ice of Damocles)
  • Major
  • A spell that can only be used on frozen targets is too restrictive. Since the ice school didn't have a control spell, I modified it to be unique in its usage: it will burst on frozen targets but act as an immobilization spell otherwise.

Song of the Archdeacon
  • Major
  • I hesitated to remove it, but I'm not objective. I love the spell. The problem is that chance makes the spell uninteresting. So, I ensured that the Archdeacon spawns after a certain time, and I improved the effects on pieces in such a way that it can become a "core-spell."

Subconsciously (or not), I've been using categories for the spells based on their cost. Spells that cost "2 energy / 6 mana" are too few to form a category on their own. So, I reworked them to fit into the "1 energy / 7 mana" spells category. In the process, I adjusted them accordingly.
  • Tsunami: actually, I went back and reverted the changes for this one.
  • Thunder strike: I found something really cool, I'm very happy with the change.
  • Ice wave: I think I found the missing piece to make this spell appealing.

Fixes

  • Rotten mushroom
  • Rubix
  • Golden fortress: catapult targeting

Enjoy!

Fleshcult - jack
Next week I'll be increasing the price of Fleshcult to $5 on both Steam and Itch. I've added a lot of stuff since 2020, and I think I've added enough to the experience that I can justify this new price. And of course, I too am getting screwed by inflation.
ARK: Survival Evolved - ARK: Survival Evolved

Meet the queen of helicopter parenting! She's the mother hen of the prehistoric world, fiercely protecting her little ones with a love that's larger than life. We can't wait to see the community creature vote winner, Gigantoraptor, roaming the vast expanse of Ragnarok!
Speaking of new creatures, there are still a few days left to submit your vote for the next addition to Aberration!

Download in full resolution

Species: Gigantoraptor nutritor
Time: Late Cretaceous
Diet: Omnivore
Temperament: Territorial

Unless you’re planning to raid its nest, you shouldn’t let this creature’s imposing size worry you. Gigantoraptor may be fiercely protective of its brood, but it’s much more of a caregiver than a fighter.

Don’t get me wrong -- this theropod will use its sharp claws and surprising speed to defend its young when threatened. But Gigantoraptor has a soft heart for young ones -- it’ll even take in the orphaned babies of rival species.

Now for the bad news: to my knowledge, no one’s been able to figure out how to tame an adult Gigantoraptor – its unique disposition seems resistant to behavioral conditioning. However, Survivors bolder than me were able to sneak into nests to win the trust of their young, and they claim that reward is well worth the risk.

Once matured to adulthood, your tamed Gigantoraptor will happily look after any of your tribe’s young creatures, nurturing them and teaching them how to fight. It can even use its call to help you find orphaned baby animals out in the wild. If you bring those orphans home, then your Gigantoraptor will happily add them to its brood.

Gigantoraptor forms an inseparable bond with its young charges. Bring them into a fight together and they will defend each other, and your tribe, far more effectively than when apart.

The competition is reaching its boiling point as we near the end of the Community Creature Vote. Soon, we'll know which entry will emerge victorious! You still have the weekend to vote for which creature will be added to Aberration for ARK: Survival Ascended
The second round of voting ends on July 24th at 4 PM Pacific.

The winner* will be announced in the Crunch Friday, July 28th, 2023.

  • Rank the creatures in order of most preferred to least preferred
  • The vote is limited to 1 submission per person (duplicate entries will be discarded)

studio apart(ment) - highpriestessminegenist
hello everyone! it's been a year since i posted the last update but i will try to be more consistent about posting updates in the future. with that said here's what's been added in the last year or so.

as a reminder, studio apart(ment) is a life sim meets roguelite where you play 7 days of a life sim before restarting, although some things stay, like your relationships, inventory, and upgrades. between runs you can unlock upgrades to find new areas, abilities, and activities.

skateboarding
the most recent addition has been skateboarding! in case running proves too slow for you, you can zip around the city on your own skateboard. in the future skateboard customization will be added to make it feel even more unique.

jobs
similar to how animal crossing and stardew valley start, i wanted a simple way to make money in the city which would serve as your first source of income until future, the first way is picking up trash around the city, making it cleaner for all your residents and making you a bit of money per day. if you keep missing your quotas per day, though, you'll lose your job.

fishing
i couldn't make a life sim without adding fishing! i took heavy inspiration from paper mario: the thousand year door's action commands. first you cast, then depending on the rarity of the fish you get, you'll have to execute a series of increasingly fast inputs to catch the fish. fishing also introduces a new (unfinished) dock area in the style of a japanese garden. despite the industrial nature of most docks, we can still found beauty in a city.

ui improvements
these aren't super large changes but they're definitely noticeable. i added button prompts so that interactions with the world were much more clear, especially for controller. The corner ui was also cleaned up a fair bit.

clothing
custom clothing! you can equip 4 different clothing items to customize your look, but there isn't much yet in the game as i'm still modeling more clothes and accessories to wear. take a look:

that's about it for the last year of development. it doesn't look like much, but i've omitted all of the boring things like bug fixes and ik foot placement and the code reworking which i've been doing a fair bit of which is not very fun to read about. i'll try to update more, but the core gameplay loop is really coming together.
