Updates for the Month of July!



A lot of technical work is being done for Reign Of The Legends at this time. There are a few things we need to work out for the next update. Let's jump in!

Coding

Netcode Adjustments

In the last few weeks, a lot of effort has been put into Netcode improvements for Reign of The Legends. A large bulk of the coding work the whole month of June has gone towards this mission specifically. We are still testing out changes in the netcode at the time of writing.

Steam Deck compatibility and debugging

We have received numerous reports of Reign of The Legends not functioning properly on the Steam Deck. In these past few weeks, we have started looking into potential fixes. We do not have much to share on the matter currently, but we are definitely planning to continue looking into this issue in the future.

Spring Heeled Jack



Spring Heeled Jack is practically complete. There are still some small adjustments to be made for the character. Mostly, we are still making sure the character functions properly and is balanced. Sounds have been completely implemented and all moves are in the game. We are excited to have this character in your hands!

Bug Fixes

As always, the team is hunting down any bugs in the game and eliminating them as best we can. Please continue to report anything found to the team either via Discord or on the Steam Discussions page.



Animations

The Invisible Man



The Invisible Man's animations are all complete! The character has all attacks, reactions, specials, and unleashed attacks ready. This character has also received his alternate color schemes. We have not started implementing this character into the game yet, as doing so would result in further delays for Spring Heeled Jack. The character is ready to be coded into the game, however it will be a little wait.

Bonus Fighters



In the mean time, due to The Invisible Man's animations being complete, we have actually began working on our three bonus fighters' animations! We do plan to reveal these fighters later in the year. For the time being, know that they are still planned for release before the game is completed. We still would like to clarify that these characters are a large part of the Reign of The Legends story, and are treated as Bonus fighters.



Other News

New Announcer
The team has been looking into changing the announcer's voice for Reign of The Legends. We are looking for a different feel than the current announcer. We are also looking for a new announcer due to having to record additional lines now with the inclusion of the Bonus Fighters. Additionally, the team has decided to rename The White Lady. The team has been set on a simple change, "The Lady In White."

The Erase Warehouse and Frankenstein's Sanctuary




As we prepare for the next major update, The Erase Warehouse and Frankenstein's Sanctuary will receive their final adjustments. We are planning to add the final polish to these stages and ensure their total functionality. The plan is still set to have these stages release with Spring Heeled Jack.

EVO 2023



Once again, EVO approaches! The team has begun work on a new trailer for 2023! We plan to showcase the game once again, perhaps a bit more in depth, with hopes of attracting new players. We are also looking to show off a bit more of Spring Heeled Jack! We're looking forward to participating once again in the Indie Fighting Game Showcase!

It has been a busy month for the team, and there is still plenty of work to be done. We'll continue to update you when we can, and we are hoping to have the next major update done as soon as possible. There is a lot more to it than just Jack's implementation. As the initial translations are made using machine translation there may be some words or phrases that can be improved in any particular language. Because of this, the language files are stored separately from the base game files in a folder called LanguageFiles, and can be editted directly. Soon I will setup a public git repository, allowing players to submit corrections to help improve the localizations for others. We also ran into a problem with the Bulgarian files, but will have them up shortly. We've also added a new function that will automatically switch to the language that a new players OS is using when they are opening the game for the first time, but that didn't quite make it into this patch and likewise will be added in soon.

If there is anything missing from the translations please let me know and I will make sure they get added into the system.

Hey everyone,

Over the last few months we've been making great progress on Metropolis 1998. A lot has changed since creating my Steam page. We're getting close to implementing the core game loop, which is really exciting.

Since March, the user interface is being redeveloped from scratch based on user feedback. I took a lot of inspiration from Rollercoaster Tycoon and OpenRCT 2.

In progress, new UI (note: game window was downsized for screencap):




Sidewalks have been added to the game. Soon units will be able to choose between walking or driving to their destination.




A2D lighting engine has been added:





Roofs and day/night cycle:




I've also enhanced the indoor pathfinding code so units now consider an object's size and rotation in their movements. This means they will maneuver around large objects, and will path through tiles containing smaller objects that are rotated parallel to the units movement. There is dozens of other changes and new features as well, but we just wanted to cover the large ones today.

Here I am with another patch :) This one mainly focuses on the issues folks were having with the mushroom sample questline. It was acting up strangely where some of you weren’t able to deliver your last samples. To help that I’ve introduced a ✨new thing✨;

🍄 The Mushroom Board 🍄
This new sign can be found right next to Toph and will be where you can easily see all the various samples and their hints. You can also go to the board to deliver your samples (including those with save files where you previously couldn’t!).



Samples you can deliver will show up as orange with three exclamation points and ones you haven’t found yet are dark brown with a question mark! To change into the various hats you can still go to the hat box.

The mushroom board is a much more clear and reliable way of handling the mushroom samples so I hope you enjoy it!

🎈 The after-party feature 🎈
I see a lot of folks are eager to keep playing after they’ve reached the end of the game and complete some of their final deliveries. Well now you can!

From now on,when you reload a save that you left in the party (or after the credits), it’ll put the game back to how it was before the party. You’ll still be in the location you last were but you’ll be able to go back to delivering your remaining letters!

Note for pre-existing save files:
There is ONE catch though! For those of you that have an existing save file from before this patch, you won’t be able to replay the party on that save file due to how your dialogue history saves. I’m really sorry about that but there’s nothing I can do to help that sadly.

🌟 Future plans 🌟
I’m not done with Mail Time yet! There’s a number of things in the works:
  • The highly requested map feature (I’m working on it!!)
  • Continue resolving bugs that come in via Discord/Steam Forums
  • There’s additional content that I’d love to bring to you all in a content update(s).
No more info on that yet as I don’t want to announce anything until it’s ready but that’s what I’m working on!





Backing up your save
If you'd like to backup your save before playing the new patch (just in case), you can find it in the following location:

Windows: %USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/MailTime/Saved/SaveGames

Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/ Epic/MailTime/Saved/SaveGames

It will be called MailTime.sav so just copy that file to a save location!

If you ever want to play on that file again just put it back in the folder, being careful to make sure the name is still MailTime.sav and you can start the game and play it.

- introduced the sample board (next to Toph) where you can now deliver your mushroom samples and see all the hints (this should also fix save files where the mushroom quest got stuck)
- when at Greg's cave you can no longer accidentally trigger the dialogue that thinks you're at the van
- moved the parrot waxcap mushroom sample from the snowy end area to a new spot for better access, happy hunting!
- on a save file that's already played the epilogue party reloading the save (continue game) should allow you to continue playing.
- dialogue cameras for each NPC are pre-determined and so cannot clip into the player

- moved the 'reset location' location in the pond area so you can't sequence break
- made sure when closing the handbook you regain focus to any other open UI

- removed quick start from the main menu to avoid confusion until it can be reworked.
- Express Delivery patch now actually counts seconds (not minutes). (there's still some work to be done here to make the patch more reliable as people are reporting it not working)
- controller navigation issues addressed across a bunch of UI screens
- Kaz no longer becomes unavailable during the Heist storyline as that could interfere with other -deliveries to him.
- fixed an issue where dialogue would never start in the opening sequence if you opened the handbook before it started the dialogue
- resolved a bug where two images in the credits would never show
- resolved errors in Korean translation

✨MINOR:
- fixed a deep hole in the terrain under the waterfall in the pond area
- made mycologist patch count samples delivered accurately
- when loading in a save in the epilogue the party tables won't be invisible
- reduced particles at the big waterfall near Jim & the snowy area
- secret admirer patch will show 1/1 when completed and hovering in the handbook
- introduced the publisher and developer logo to the main menu
- edited the credits to not mention Nintendo Switch or Playstation
- resolved dialogue tags showing in Janet's dialogue on the Japanese translation
- on first startup of the game the game will now attempt to sync with your PC's system language (if possible)
- parrot waxcap mushroom sample now has the correct UI art
- integrated some backend work for the upcoming map feature so that in future all save files will be able to support that. (also compatible with older save files)
- excluded confirm tab in handbook from bookmark cycle so it doesn't close accidentally when using Q/E (keyboard) or L/R (controller)
- renamed 'switch joysticks' to 'swap joysticks' in the settings for clarity
- resolved an issue where for some players not all water would load in
- prevented the game from loading double (reduces load on PC slightly)
