Hello everyone - what a month June has been for Broken Roads! The demo is live, we had some incredible YouTube coverage, the demo received many patches and improvements, and of course… We got the cover of PC Gamer!
This is such an honour and the team are of course so proud of this achievement, and we’re sending a huge thanks to everyone at Versus Evil, Plan of Attack and PC Gamer that helped bring this together. STEAM NEXT FEST DEMO UPDATE
The Broken Roads demo on Steam has been so well-received and we appreciate all the kind words, encouragement and constructive feedback we’ve heard from the players. There are some lively discussions happening on our official Discord, there was a great r/Perth thread on Reddit, and of course the many Twitch streamers and YouTubers playing the game and sharing their videos - thank you all! We absolutely love seeing the game enjoyed by you and your communities.

The team have worked really hard to patch the demo since it went live, including the likes of:
Hold [Tab] to highlight interactables and display NPC names
Added subtitles to the opening video
Right click to use healing items in inventory outside of combat
Support for 16:9, 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratios
Added tutorial pop-ups
In the dialogue window, descriptions are grey and dialogue is now displayed in white
Many animation, VFX and SFX improvements and additions
Added in localisation for our launch languages (this is ongoing and we are patching in more translations as they arrive!)
Fixed a bug that prevented audio level settings from persisting once you changed scenes
Added in the option to display/hide moral choices to the settings menu
Fixed many bugs along the way!

CHARACTER PROFILE: DEAD RINGER
Dead Ringer is the worst compulsive liar you’ll ever meet, but in amongst his strains of madness and impropriety rest stubborn grains of truth. A consummate Machiavellian, he’s willing to bind himself to anyone who understands the true nature of freedom, as he defines it.
If you recognise him, you’re mistaken. He’s just got one of those faces, hence the nickname. He swears it’s also why he gets locked up so often, because he’s being punished for other people’s actions, but omits the many, many crimes he himself has actually committed. People are so quick to judge, these days.
“Our painterly style and gestural brush strokes is always a lot of fun to use when expressing dirt and tattered clothing,” says Sara Laubscher, Lead Environment Artist. “Dead Ringer is certainly a character where we could really push that aspect of our visual language”. You can meet Dead Ringer in the demo once you reach Brookton, and how you deal with him - or not - is up to you.
COMPANION REACTIVITY

BROKEN ROADS OST - 'IT'S AN EXISTENCE'
"It's An Existence" is part of the Broken Roads soundtrack, written, recorded and produced by Drop Bear Bytes' Audio Lead and Composer, Tim Sunderland.
“I thought about the people of Brookton in-game,” says Tim, “and how they live a life of neither luxury nor ruin but the average person would just shrug their shoulders as if to say "It's an existence", content but with an underlying melancholy and so that's what I tried to convey with the music. This was one of the earlier written pieces that really helped define the overall sound and feel of Broken Roads.”

Introduction
We are thrilled to present the latest update for our game, packed with a range of fixes, enhancements, and improvements to elevate your gaming experience. From addressing bugs to improving the storyline and incorporating player feedback, we have worked diligently to enhance your enjoyment of the game.
Gameplay Update
- Replaced lantern with flash light. This allowed the game to open combat up in dark areas, and gave us the ability to create areas with zero lights, or very dark lighting. - Redesigned m9 pickup area for gun to not be so easily missed.
Bug Fixes
Camera and Transitions: - Fixed camera transition issue from the church to the podium puzzle room. - Adjusted the camera transition from the library to the church black cube to ensure proper positioning. - Resolved the bug where the camera transition went through the floor when entering the hatch from Kane's estate. - Fixed loading which would crash, due to issues with equipped weapons.
Visual and Graphic Fixes
- Improved FPS by optimizing character model and lighting in all levels. - Replaced volumetric beams on cars in cutscenes. - Resolved clipping issues with the fat scraper and shed in the forest outer woods. - Fixed face glitches in the detective office cutscene. - Improved road surface appearance after getting out of the car. - Improved lighting for outside church area, and various other areas. - Fixed Lynn's stutter steps at the end of her walking animation in the lab.
Mechanics
- disabled all input when confirming a load. - Adjusted aim sensitivity based on player feedback. - Smoother transitions. - Resolved culling issues on fixed cameras in the forest tunnel. - Fixed blood effects when scrapers or the player gets hit. - Resolved blendshape issues in the lab scene. - Fixed issue causing baby room sad music to play simultaneously with chase music. - Fixed collider issues in the lab scene that allowed player movement.
UI and Interface Fixes
- Fixed the visibility of notice icons for campfire and telescope - Ensured opacity of the load menu is 100% when opened. - Made setting values auto-save. - Added skip option in the pause menu in cutscenes. - Improved the size and legibility of the resolutions drop-down menu. - Adjusted the placement of connection time in the load/save menu screen. - Removed room titles in maps to avoid confusion.
These bug fixes aim to enhance the overall gameplay experience by addressing issues that impacted visual fidelity, mechanics, UI elements, and player immersion. We appreciate your support and hope you enjoy the improved game performance.

Todays update brings some long awaited features, and finished up the Results screen!
In addition to fully working MvP accolades, each mission now has bonus objectives to complete (which can also be seen in-game from the pause menu), as well as a more balanced point and star system!
(Note, we're aware of a bug with the "Accuracy" objective on Mission 4)
As for the full list of fixes:
Additions - Results Screen & Bonus Objectives are finished! - Each mission has a bonus objective that gives a huge boost to points afterwards. - Points are properly obtainable in all modes to get stars. - MvPs are no longer random and are properly calculated across all players (may look different online, atm) - Main MvP is now the player on the winning team with the highest score, or most damage against bosses. (No more enemy MvP's) - Killfeed now has updated graphics on Zombie & Suicide deaths, and now displays whether kills were headshots or not.
Fixes - Mission 4 boss no longer blasts out all shots at once. - victory cutscene no longer plays if you lose the match. (Except final demo video) - Mission 4 displays the proper mode description - Health & Crit on hero page now also turn green when modified by hero skills. - MvPs weapons on the results screen now display the proper camos.
Balance - Rebalanced all Sniper rifles to feel more distinct. - Boomstick spare ammo properly set at 12 (24 was a mistake) - Recoded the Bipod to not give near-perfect accuracy when crouching. - Results screen no longer ends after 10 seconds when playing locally.
