Floodland - The Game Doc
Greetings survivor,

Rumors of our drowning have been greatly exaggerated
With focus, we set to task
New opportunities now abound

Since returning from the winter holidays, we’ve harvested player’s feedback to better guide our development. Far from abandoned, we’ve been feverishly working in the background of Floodland knowing that the concepts, design and feel of the game resonate with many.

Now we’re ready to unleash a spring tide of new content and fixes.

Warning, you may need to start a new playthrough to get the new content and fixes.

Let’s start our deep dive with the fun stuff!

All these new free features and content are aimed at one thing, adding depth and replayability to your Floodland experience. We’ve added:

From out there among the drowned ruins of old comes word of eight new clans to be discovered. Four can be selected as a starter clan when you begin a new game and four are out there, surviving. Each represents a binding ideology that has kept them alive this far. Fronted by a leader who will express the clan's story and the different traits the clan possesses.

How will you incorporate them into your society? Can you afford to?

While the shape of the island you start on remains the same, it is not unchanged.
Four layouts are now available, which will spice each play through. Resources and important buildings will be distributed differently.
Furthermore, when venturing out, you will discover new islands in the mix of those randomly generated with each play-through.

Floodland offers a rich world and a lore for those who uncover remnants of the old world. We won’t spoil them here, but there are around 20 new notes to find for those who enjoy a deep dive.

As your society develops you’ll encounter up to 10 new events. The decisions you make as leader will define how your fledgling community grows. Some of them offer some assuming twists to look out for.

If food be the food of love, eat on!
Many ask for more options to efficiently feed their settlement and so we’ve added the Mushroom pickers hut. Survivors can’t be picky, except when they can.
This increases the reach of the mushroom gatherers, which may not sound hugely important but to your settlers, it’s a big deal because it greatly increases their strategic options regarding sourcing food as Mushrooms used to be underpowered.

Three new laws
With these extra laws you’ll be able to make the most of your community and focus their development towards your goals.

Many reviews and comments told us that, while people love the ideas and feels of Floodland, they were disappointed by technical difficulties. So firstly, we have fixed the most pressing issues that players told us about. This includes, but are far from limited to:

Endgame objective: The last objective has been fixed to improve the end game experience. For spoilers about this objective see this Steam forum link https://steamcommunity.com/app/1336180/discussions/0/3824162683805694613/

Stability and performance: Crashes should be significantly reduced. Of course, we can’t account for all system configurations. The late game has been significantly optimized. Caping menu FPS to 60 makes the game work much smoother. We’ve also made many memory fixes that previously promoted crash problems.

Survivors pathing issues: We have improved the scheduling of tasks which had knock on effects that led to issues, for example: people being stuck on boats and piers and resources not seemingly being transported.

Shacks won't always upgrade to houses: Now they do!

District Autonomy Law flaws: This law is now clearly described in game so that the expectation of the mechanic can be easily understood.

Game events repeating: While some events are intended to repeat, their frequency has been significantly increased. Especially in regards to crises events.

Save game load issues: Should be fixed, but some rare cases may not be and so please contact us via Discord and we can try to fix your game files.

Here are all the murky details about the fixes we’ve been working on the past 4 months:

Quality of life changes:
  • Preferred clan mechanics in Study is now more intuitive
  • A maximum level of experience added
  • Clarified information in a few tooltips

  • Multiple fixes to certain tutorials not showing up properly
  • The Electrified modes of certain buildings now correctly affect the number of work posts

Graphic changes:
  • Tweaks in the animations of citizens and birds
  • Buildings placed on the curved surface are not hanging in mid-air
  • Electricity visualization in a few Adaptable Buildings
  • Visual adjustments to infections in expedition return panel

UI clarifications
  • Better view of the line connecting citizens with workplace and home
  • New information in Technology Development showing details on building costs of Pathway on Shallow Water node
  • Some fixes of inconsistent placement of elements on different UI scales
  • Minor fixes to resource limits on the global resource panel - now data updates when the storage type building is deconstructed
  • Visual adjustments to the left side panel with quests visited Ruins and Reclaims, etc.
  • New UI dedicated to crises
  • Added Clan’s in-game notification about Influence rise
  • Electricity buildings in Technology Development show production outcomes

Other changes & fixes:
  • New data is included in the endgame panel, showing more diverse information about your playthrough
  • New ambient sounds and music pieces have been added
  • Rain frequency change
  • Small fixes of keyboard control
  • Pathfinder Camp building relocation interruption was facilitated
  • Fixes for players that can’t accidentally turn off various panels (ex. Technology Development) during tutorials
  • Paths refreshment after map changes - now citizens do not avoid buildings that no longer exist
  • Citizens animation fixes
  • Level Design fixes
  • Localization fixes based on internal and external LQA
  • Problematic effects of merging clans fixed
  • Facilitation of blocking pier problem that sometimes happens
  • Fixed problem with clan members that continue consuming Textbooks even if the clan has reached the maximum level
  • Same-Sex Marriage, Fish Farm and Mushrooming Regulations laws tweaks

This all relates to build v.1.2.22330

Penny Larceny: Gig Economy Supervillain - Fiction Factory Games

You can't have a world of comic book criminal adventure without comic book heroes to fight your comic book villains using comic book sound effects. Without opposition, there's no challenge. And without challenge, how do you know if you're a true gamer who can git gud instead of being a scrub?

So in Penny Larceny: Gig Economy Supervillain, you'll be frequently going up against Farsight -- the hero to your villain, the cape to your mask.

Unlike Penny, Farsight has actual superpowers -- after a lab accident during a school field trip to a Continuum facility, she gained the ability to see through the possibility-space of time. She knows every move you're going to make before you make it, which means she can always counterplay your actions. She can dodge bullets by making sure she's not where you're going to shoot them, she can avoid punches and kicks by repositioning herself ahead of time, and smooths over any chaos with perfect order. She's basically invincible.

A pity that her powers have some, uhhh... let's say "drawbacks." It's not easy to have a million versions of yourself all arguing in your head. Ever wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and have an intrusive thought that says "Hey, you suck"? Okay, multiply that times infinity. Go ahead, we'll wait.

Everything Is Fine, according to the medical researchers of Continuum who routinely monitor her health and ensure she's in fighting form. As a corporate-sponsored hero, she divides her time between protecting their assets and picking up anonymous Capebook tips. It's a small price to pay for "free" healthcare for life, in exchange for not suing Continuum over the accident that granted her abilities in the first place. A noble and strong-hearted hero wouldn't complain about getting superpowers, right? They wouldn't take a cash settlement and just sit around at home -- with great power comes great something something.

Okay, okay. Let's get on to the question you've been just itching to ask:

"Can I romance the heroine?"

Yes, you can romance the heroine. Five of the nine Crimr capers will allow you to progress down a romance track to unlock a romance and win a romance achievement so you can be the big bad romance gamer. Assuming you're willing to abandon your boss to go chase down some cape lovin', of course.

Right. So that's three smoochable villains and one smoochable hero. Not bad, right? Good variety, little something for everyone.

And speaking of "something for everyone," come back here next week so we can talk more about accessibility issues and how we're implementing new tools in Penny Larceny so everyone can play regardless of ability. ...y'know, accessibility issues like Steam not having freaking alt text capability on their news announcements! Grumble grumble.
Conqueror's Blade - Kaeden
Back in April, we asked you to create fine Conqueror’s Blade-themed art in celebration of World Art Day. It was no easel task, but you rose to the occasion with artistic ardour, and we now have three beautiful winning pieces to showcase here in our virtual gallery.
WINNER
Dragonov sketched their way to success with this rabble-rousing tribute to the mighty Maul.

SECOND PLACE
Warfafu used flaming colours to depict a hero resting next to their steed amidst the chaos of the battlefield.

THIRD PLACE
Dayushka produced this beautiful piece which sees a hero surrounded by the tranquillity of nature, a brief respite from the urgency of battle.

Thank you to all the artists who entered! Keep an eye out for more contests in the future.

Evasive Maneuvers - SkyPyre Studios
The gate was finally active. Zephyr, for the first time since the attack on the hideout, allowed herself a real, genuine grin. “Runners! Let’s get at it!”

The pair of twin thruster units on the Updraft flared to their maximum intensity and she went streaking off, followed by the flock of fleeing ships, all speeding towards the swirling light and darkness of the gate in a shower of sparks and disrupting smoke amid Artemis’s cavernous hangar.

Within the newly reactivated Canopus Coast, Doctor Cal furrowed his eyes in concentration at the gate ahead. “Now, Mister Jeffords,” he spoke quietly to Turbine, “We re-enter the field of Experimental Physics.”

Upsilon 1 gritted his teeth as the runners disappeared into the swirling portal, out of their grasp. This was not the end! “Follow them!”

“But sir! There’s no way even they know where it leads! The likelihood of destruction-”

“Three, that was an order. The pride of the hunters is on the line!”

“...Yes sir. Forming up.”

Despite his confident statement, Upsilon 1 was nervous. This relic could send them straight into a star or worse. But it didn’t matter. He would catch his quarry, even if he had to cross through hell’s heart!

—------ - - - - - -

The gaggle of ships blasted out of the other end of the gateway. But things felt strange.

“-ny one -lse’s sens-rs going absolu--ly nuts?” Ordinal’s distorted question came through on the comms. Only problem was that Ordinal themselves hadn’t yet said anything.

But the question was apt. The Updraft didn’t have the most extensive sensor suite but what it did have would be no help. Her gravity-aligned altitude readouts were constantly shifting upside down and back around and her speed readouts were jumping ahead and back orders of magnitude.

And to top it off she was looking out at something impossible itself. Below them was a sea, rocks jutting out amongst the crashing waves, but above them as well was another identical sight. “Doc?”

“Ms. Sorris! This is a breakthrough! A revelation! We have somehow crossed over! The gateways- I always suspected the potential! I suspect it was the untethered nature of Artemis’s gateway that allowed it! Zehil’s Hypothesis - It’s proven! We are looking at the ‘Zehil Divide!’”

“Doc?”

“To put it simply, Ms. Sorris, We’ve entered a space between dimensions!”

Cities: Skylines - CO_Avanya
Hello everyone and welcome to today’s dev diary where we explore the features coming to Cities: Skylines in the mini-expansion Hotels & Retreats! It brings a new customizable hotel chain to the game letting your city capitalize on tourism and organize events at your premium hotels. Hotels & Retreats will be available on PC and console on the 23rd of May. We have lots of new content to cover, so let’s get started!

Hotels & Tourists
Hotels unlock when you reach Milestone 3: Tiny Town and can be found in the new Hotels tab under Parks & Plazas. You start out with 3 different 1-star hotels, but as your hotel chain becomes more successful you unlock new hotels with higher ratings all the way up to 5-star luxury hotels, which can host events.

Invite tourists to stay at the Budget Hotel (left), the Mountain Lodge (middle), or the Luxury Hotel (right)

Before placing your first hotel we need to talk about tourists and location. With Hotels & Retreats, tourists fall into one of four categories: Sightseeing Tourists visit the city to see the sights seeking out unique buildings and parks during their stay. Shopping Tourists are here for your city’s shopping opportunities and look for commercial zones to visit. Business Tourists do not visit for pleasure, they’re in your city for work and have business to attend to at offices. And last, but not least we have Nature Tourists who prefer to stay away from the busy city and enjoy the natural scenery your city has to offer.

How much a hotel appeals to each group of tourists depends both on the hotel itself and where in the city it’s placed. The tooltip of a hotel shows how much (if at all) a hotel can appeal to these groups, while the surroundings you place it in will fill up each bar accordingly. The new Hotel Locations Infoviews will help you find the perfect location for your hotel showing a heat map for each of the four categories. When you select a hotel the Infoview is automatically opened showing the hotel’s highest potential category, but for the optimal location, you can cycle through each category and choose a spot with the best overlap. You can also give the overall popularity rating a boost by placing public transport nearby, making sure there is little to no crime in the area, and avoiding areas with heavy pollution.

Find the perfect spot for your new hotels

Once placed you can select the hotel to see how much it appeals to each group of tourists, its overall popularity rating, and how profitable it is. You can also adjust the price per night depending on how well your hotel is doing. Lowering the price will make it more appealing to tourists even if the popularity rating is less than ideal, while you can charge a higher price for very attractive locations. Hotel expenses stay the same regardless of how many guests are staying the night, so the key to a profitable hotel is filling up those rooms!

Improve the surrounding area to increase the hotel’s popularity rating

Running a hotel chain
You’ve found a good location and built your first hotel. Time to turn this into a chain and grow the city’s tourism! The hotel chain is automatically created with a default name and logo, which can be customized in the Hotel Management interface. You can find this through the Manage Hotels button found on all hotel interfaces or through the Hotel Locations Infoview. You can name your hotel chain anything, select one of 7 logos to use, and customize the color of both the logo and your hotels.

The Hotel Management interface also provides an overview of all your hotels, their popularity, amount of guests staying there at the moment, and how profitable they are. You can sort them by popularity to increase the price of your most popular ones or sort them by profit to improve any which are struggling. At the bottom, you will find information about your hotel chain’s overall star rating and the requirements to reach the next level.

Manage and customize your hotel chain through the Hotel Management interface

When your hotel chain reaches 5 stars you unlock 3 different 5-star hotels: the Heritage Hotel, the Deluxe Hotel, and the Design Hotel, which can all host events. Each hotel specializes in different event types with a total of 9 events to choose from across them all. Events are selected and started on the hotel’s interface and have 3 phases. The longest phase is the preparation phase where news of the hotel event is spreading and tourists plan their trip to the event. The active phase lasts a few days to a week as the event is ongoing, and it’s followed by the disorganization phase as things return to business as usual for the hotel.

When selecting an event you will see the cost to host the event, how long the active phase is, and how much it increases tourism. The tourism boost is applied when you start the event so your city benefits from it during the preparation phase as well as the active phase.

Boost your city’s tourism with events at your 5-star hotels

Bring in tourists
While hotels give tourists a place to stay in your city allowing them to extend their visits, the city itself needs to appeal to tourists for them to visit. The Tourism Infoview shows the City Attractiveness, which is calculated from citizen happiness, land value, and unique buildings in the city. The higher City Attractiveness, the more tourists will visit the city, so if your hotel chain is struggling you can increase the City Attractiveness to encourage more tourists to stay at your hotels.

One way to do this is by raising the land value through more parks and plazas, and Hotels & Retreats includes 8 new parks found in the Tourism & Leisure tab under Parks & Plazas. The Tiny Park or Tiny Playground live up to their names and fit in most places, while the larger Pond Park and Sidewalk Restaurant require more space and provide more entertainment. The new parks can be found easily using the menu filter and can be used to spruce up any part of your city.

Tourists and citizens alike will enjoy the new tourism buildings

New maps
As with any expansion we of course have new maps for you to create your dream city. Hotels & Retreats come with 5 new maps featuring a variety of landscapes. Coastal Flatlands lives up to its name as a mostly flat landscape dotted with hills, rivers, and lakes which provide ample opportunities to attract nature tourists. The beautiful coastline makes this map ideal for a waterfront city frequented by cruise ships.

Coastal Flatlands offers plenty of space for your new city

Emerald Cliffs is a European map with a bay stretching far inland and cliffs towering above the landscape and providing incredible scenery for any city. It offers great connections to the sea and lots of fertile land, while the mountainous areas are rich in ore. Will you build a city focused on tourism or take advantage of the natural resources the land has to offer? Either way, Emerald Cliffs has much to offer any city.

What kind of city will you build at Emerald Cliffs?

Next, we have our second European map, Maze Valley, a canyon carved into the landscape through eons. The rivers flowing through the canyon are surrounded by large plains ideal for a new city nestled between the cliffs. But your city doesn’t have to be a gem hidden from the world with a shipping lane running through the rivers and a train line connecting you to other cities, there are many ways to bring goods and tourists to your city.

Build a thriving metropolis in the secluded Maze Valley

Shifting Sands takes us to the tropics at the edge of the desert where the river flows into a large bay. The lush green areas surrounding the water create a stunning contrast to the barren rocky desert and the mountains on the horizon. If you’re looking to build an industry-focused city then Shifting Sands provides plenty of ore and oil to benefit your city while the bay offers great shipping connections. The flat landscape also provides the perfect conditions for a bustling metropolis.

Shifting Sands is the perfect location for your next desert city

We finish our map tour with another European map named Weaving Waters, a map split by a serpentine river and filled with historical sites. The vast forests covering the landscape are ideal for nature retreats or forestry depending on your city. Connect your city to the outside world through the highways or railroad, or take advantage of the flat areas to build an airport. Whether you plan to embrace the landscape or make room for your city, this map has a lot to offer.

Create your dream city along the shores of the river at Weaving Waters

This brings us to the end of this dev diary covering the new content in Hotels & Retreats. Like always we have a free patch coming alongside the mini-expansion, which we will cover in the dev diary Friday at 4:00 PM CEST. What are you most excited about in Hotels & Retreats? Do you have any areas in your city ideal for hotels? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
