Big news first: GET HYPE! We can finally reveal that BOOK OF HOURS is launching on Steam and GOG (across Windows, Mac and Linux) on...

This means we can extend the beta and make it a more polished game on release. It's later than we'd hoped, but the feedback so far makes us think we could make this lil' library game really special. We want to take the time to do that. ✌

This game is increasingly like an only slightly poisonous puzzle box of luxury chocolates. Is that a clear enough description? There are chambers and secrets and little jewels to find and lore to discover alongside Mrs Killes' cooking and the sound of rain on a stormy Cornish night. And deadly bon-bons. We originally intended to make a light, agile game like Cultist Simulator, which has tonnes of words in it (200,000+ including DLC, I think?) but hasn't had a good meal in weeks. But over the years BOOK OF HOURS gained a patina, and the game grew roots. It's now probably the 'deepest' game we've ever made, with layers and layers of lore lain on top of one another like resting bones in Mesozoic rock.

One of the key parts of BOOK OF HOURS that we haven't discussed much is the player's ability to influence the Secret Histories - or at least what's canonical in the Histories. The Wisdom Tree is part skill tree, in traditional RPG style ('I kill u with Horomachistry'; 'I am so unskilled in Bosk I cannot even wear this green hat'), but also part branching narrative, where the Librarian gets to decide what's 'true'. AK tweeted a thread on this recently, but to illustrate on example: every skill can be assigned to one of two nodes in the Wisdom Tree. Which one you choose not only increases your understanding of that particular Wisdom, but also makes a lore statement about the nature of the invisible world. Take 'Pentiments & Precursors', which can be assigned to Skolekosophy or Birdsong:



Is Medusa a Name of the Twins, or is she descended from the Carapace Cross? (Preservation suggests: whichever is true, you should be polite.)

AK's also been writing contagions, so our long-touted game description - "Defend your library against storm, fire, theft and the occasional theoplasmic assault" - is now a reality! Horribly, some contagions can spread to OTHER NEARBY THINGS:

"This book is blotched with keeperskin, a luminous fungus that grows in the Wood we see in sleep, and enters the world when a dreamer inhales its spores."

Then there are other types of contamination, which might not start a pandemic, but will make you equally unhappy. Take winkwell, for example, which illuminates parts of reality better left unseen:

"Sometimes when I turn this book to the right angle, I see an eye peering at me from its pages or covers. They close and fade when I leave them in the dark... but light will always bring them out eventually."

The latest beta build, BARONIAL, went live yesterday, adding all rooms in the central core of Hush House: this includes the ultra-hygge of the Librarian's Quarters; the glittering Hall of Mirrors, with its Pierrot le Fou energy; the homely charm of the Kitchen, where one might indulge in a shnack... Along with more text and functionality, we've also started incorporating a mini-Easter Egg hunt throughout the library, where you can (should you wish!) populate the Grand Ascent with the busts of all significant Barons and Librarians of the House that you'll find scattered through its 107 rooms. What happens if you get the order wrong when you assemble them up the stairs? Just ask poor ol' Abbot Thomas.

If you're signed up to the beta list but didn't get an email yesterday, don't worry! We'll be adding new testers about twice a week, so you have DOUBLE the chances next week of getting in. I understand statistics, I am a artist. DOUBLE.

Speaking of art, all Hush House art is now complete (including seasonal variants, which will be going in soon...), so we wave a sad goodbye to our fabulous Breton freelancer, Adrien. His Gallic personality and an infamous misunderstanding when we asked him to draw 'pigeon holes' - a phrase apparently that does not translate easily into French - will be missed. He ended on a bang, though: check out his version of 'Our Lady Beneath', the post-Roman chapel of the Sisterhood of the Knot in the bowels of the rock beneath Hush House:

I, meanwhile, have descended into trolling AK through aspects (there's one I drew the other day that I don't think he's spotted yet - he will probably make me take it out).



And I'm slowly but inexorably dropping gentle animations through the world, like a poor man's version of the Flowermaker.

STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor™ - Electronic Arts


We are aware that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor isn’t performing to our standards for a percentage of our PC players, in particular those with high-end machines or certain specific configurations.

For example, players using cutting-edge, multi-threaded chipsets designed for Windows 11 were encountering problems on Windows 10, or high-end GPUs coupled with lower-performing CPUs also saw unexpected frame loss. Rest assured, we are working to address these cases quickly.

While there is no single, comprehensive solution for PC performance, the team has been working on fixes we believe will improve performance across a spectrum of configurations. We are committed to fixing these issues as soon as possible, but each patch requires significant testing to ensure we don’t introduce new problems. Thanks for understanding and apologies to any of our players experiencing these issues. We will continue to monitor performance across all platforms and share update timing as soon as it is available.

1. New sound fx in different parts of the game.
2. Robot start: when exploring, now the robot will start in a random position. This add more variety of how each sector is explored.

IMPROVED:
1. Shooting enemies: No shooting enemies appear in the first sector you visit, now its not impossible to survive.
2. Enemy waves: more enemies at the lower danger sectors to make the game more exciting.
3. Enemy wave UI bar: the enemy wave bar changes color when a wave is active and inactive.
4. Starting weapon: the explorer will take a random weapon from the robot storage the first time he explores a sector after leaving a base.
5. Invented weapon dropdown: added more tooltips and better text to make it all easier to understand.
6. Tutorials: tweaks to the tutorials to make them easier to understand.
7. Story event: no story event will appear in the first sector you visit, to make the game simpler and easier to learn.
8. UI: tweaked design, window sizes, positions, colors, to make it better. Now I use a grid to position elements.
9. FPS: better frames per second when a lot of enemies appear on screen.

FIXED:
1. Story event effect: The face of the selected employee did not display correctly.
2. Weapon box: when you clicked the weapons box and then away from it, the game un-paused when it shouldn't. Also it didn't open the weapons selection window when you clicked the box again.
3. Death: The explorer could not die when running out of health.
4. Planet sector info: now only discovered sectors will show their info when selected.
5. Market: when changing the target of a transaction, the selected items did not reset.
6. Explorer Depth: if the explorer is far away, it shows the sprite behind the enemy, and if its closer to the camera, it shows it above the enemy.
7. Explorer unconscious error: fixed an error when the explorer was unconscious and you returned to the planet map.
8. Depth effect: sometimes objects didn't show behind other objects when they where farther away.
9. Opening weapons box: sometimes the box did not open when clicking it.
10. Invented weapon: when the weapon was set to explode on hit, it didn't work correctly.

Echo Storm - I'm Osama
This update is mainly aimed at improving and fixing version 1.1.0. Also the abilities of the Freeze technology have been expanded and improved, now it is very good branch to control enemies.



Changelog:
  • Fixed bug: Summon Plague Monsters ability can not be dropped in random sometimes.
  • Fixed bug: New flying melee enemy previously can fly through walls sometimes.
  • Fixed a lot of other minor bugs.
  • Added new abilities and mechanics for them. Some actual abilities were changed a bit.
  • Balance improvements: game start now easier, but with time it gets more hard, than before.
  • In settings was added parameter, which enables corpse effect cleaning, it makes levels more clean and easier to play, if you don't like a lot of corpse effects.
  • Added the new achievement.
  • Added the new freeze effect for enemies.
  • New visual environment details were added.
  • Reroll mechanic was balanced a bit.
  • Nanomachines and Advanced Nanomachines abilities were balanced a bit.
  • Improved Video settings screen, fixed bugs and added new parameters.
  • Plasma moon weapon was balanced. Again. :)
  • Minor user interface edits.
  • Some modding improvements - support of loading custom map was added, etc. Actually it can not be used to make user maps, but in future updates it will be more useful.
  • Inner code improvements and a lot of other undocumented changes.

Mega Knockdown - dhamster
This update is intended to improve the experience of navigating menus, and should allow for more consistent controller support.

Menu Navigation, UI and Mousing Improvements
  • Fixed issue where clicking outside of a button in the main menu would sometimes activate that button.
  • Fixed recent bug where an object was blocking raycasts to menu options near the bottom of the screen.
  • Fixed an issue where clicking stuff on the main menu would play the clicking sound twice.
  • In the newer menus using Unity's event system (main menu and online menus) you will more easily be able to resume keyboard/gamepad navigation after clicking away from the buttons.
  • If the game launches out of focus and you click the window, we've made it harder to accidentally click a menu option.
  • If you highlight something with your mouse and navigate to some other option with the keyboard/gamepad and you select something, the game will prioritize whichever button was actually pressed.
  • The Discord button is back, it is now navigable with a keyboard or gamepad.
  • In the rebinding menu, P2 will no longer 'forget' that they are using a gamepad the second time you open the menu. P2 will now appropriately return to the 'done' button after they are done rebinding.

Controller Support Improvements
  • The controller you're using in menus and online or single player modes should automatically become player 1. (This change was needed because depending on your user settings and hardware, sometimes Steam creates a virtual controller for player 1, and your actual controller would get assigned to player 2.)
  • You can now press L3 in the main menu to bring up a hidden debug menu to assign specific plugged in controllers to Player 1 or Player 2. For now, the goal is that you shouldn't need to use it. Smart controller assignment should 'just work.'

Other
  • Billy's stomp animation has improved line art. Later this month there will be more graphical/visual updates.
