The M.O.L.E. doesn’t just dig. No, this upgradeable black hole gun will do lots more as Techtonica’s development continues.
Today, we’re unveiling a M.O.L.E. feature that will be live with our Early Access launch this year. This is Flatten Mode.
A quick note: Much of what you see with Flatten Mode in today’s post will likely change or get tightened up as development progresses. Don’t consider this final!
Right, what’s the M.O.L.E.?
M.O.L.E. stands for Material, Obliteration, Leveling, and Excavation. We kicked lots of names around before landing on this one, but we think it’s a fun representation of one of the things at the heart of Techtonica–underground terrain manipulation.
Once unlocked, built, and fired, the M.O.L.E. shapes the Calyxian terrain by focusing black hole energy into a single point. Gears crank and churn as Groundbreakers fire the M.O.L.E. at cavern walls to clear obstructions and open fresh factory floors.
We love the M.O.L.E.. It’s crunchy, alien, destructive, and industrial. It feels and sounds good.
In the demo and Alpha, the M.O.L.E. clears a 5x5x5 section of voxels. That’s its default firing mode. Today, we’re unveiling something new.
Say hello to Flatten Mode
Groundbreakers that crave industrial organization and clean factory layouts may want nice, flat cavern floors. Once unlocked and upgraded, the M.O.L.E. makes quick work of varied terrain by turning it into a consistently smooth surface.
It’s also super, super satisfying in motion. The Calyxian rock that surrounds the target rushes in place as the black hole forms and collapses into a flat surface, and it feels fantastic when done en masse.
Have a look!
Wait… it flattens up?
Yes! If the GIF above didn’t make the M.O.L.E.’s flattening functionality clear, we’re using the black hole gun to bring terrain to the same level as the Groundbreaker who fires it.
The elevation in Techtonica changes, with some caves offering gradual slopes and others featuring sheer cliffs. You may want to reshape those spaces to suit the needs of your factory layouts better.
With the M.O.L.E.’s Flatten Mode, you stand at the level you wish to flatten, and the terrain will level up to meet you where you are.
We made quick work of this small space near Production Terminal VICTOR, for instance, to add a mini Kindlevine harvesting farm. Check the before above and the after below.
It’s super easy to use the M.O.L.E. to turn unfriendly building terrain into something more hospitable. With Flatten Mode, you can get really creative about layering factory floors with the terrain.
You ever design a black hole before?
We knew, effectively, how we wanted the M.O.L.E.’s Flatten Mode to work for a while before it came time to implement it. We weren’t sure, however, how it should look.
During the concept and design phase for Flatten Mode, we started kicking around five-ish unique ideas on how the M.O.L.E. should visually level space before landing on the hybrid final design. Four of those (informally referred to as the Seismic Target, Rock Blast, Energy Hammer, and Lightning Pillar) were sketched and considered.
Once we landed on the more seismic rock blast approach, we worked up the stages of M.O.L.E. Flatten as the gun warms up and fires.
From there, we landed on the M.O.L.E. Flatten Mode design you’ll see in Techtonica once we launch into Early Access this year.
Thanks for reading, Groundbreakers! If you have any questions or thoughts, sound off in the comments or join our Discord!
We’ll see you next week with something new and special.
Freyana was born just before the era of the catastrophe in the Greenmist Forest, under the legendary Yggdrasil’s tree. She comes from an ancient lineage, a long-gone tribe known as the Salamandrians. Peaceful beings who lived in a harmonious society under their beloved tree until the Evil Gods arose.
Freyana was endowed with a strong connection to all living things when she was a youngster and was able to hear the plants around her. She mastered the secrets of nature and evolved into a kind, innocent being incapable of harming anyone.
But everything changed after the catastrophe, a cataclysmic event that would forever alter the face of Runaria. The majority of Salamandrians gave their lives to defend their homeland against the sundering destruction and the hordes of the evil legion.
Freyana and her family were trapped in a small village surrounded by destruction and enemies. Thanks to the sacrifice of the villagers and her parents, she escaped death and reached the depths of the Greenmist Forest, where the last of the Salamandria’s kind were battling the forces of the Old Hunter.
The stainless Freyana was rapidly altered by illness and death. In her, an instinct was born. She was capable of reviving even death by relying on the forces of nature.
The year 2022 came to an end, and what a year it was! We've made some substantial progress over these past twelve months, both in the game's development and as a studio. We wanted to briefly go over what happened this year and what we're planning on in 2023 here in our creativity forge, known as the Dark Point Games studio.
First things first, the full release date of "Achilles: Legends Untold". If all goes well, it's planned for the second quarter of 2023!
We're planning one more big update until then, version 0.3.0 of the game, and then it's straight for the 1.0.
Let us show you a roadmap of the goals we want to reach this year:
If you’re more curious about the details, take a look below:
Patch 0.3.0:
Performance upgrades
Improved default control mapping, also including custom key binding on controllers and ready presets to choose from
Combat upgrades with additions like rolling through enemies when overwhelmed
Diverse new enemies, featuring spiders, living statues and murderous plants
Group AI Action (GAIA) system refinements, making the non-scripted group/environmental attacks more frequent
New dungeons to explore
More NPCs in the game’s world
Quest expansion, focusing on extending the Agamemnon questlines
Loads of new basement layouts to venture down to
Important note: because of many changes implemented in the 0.3.0 patch, we plan to erase the current saves, since they would be incompatible with the most recent version of the game. Fret not though - it will be possible to keep playing your old save. More info on how to do it will be posted soon.
Full Release:
Complete main campaign with new characters to meet and new locations to explore
Crafting
Destructible objects across the whole world
New version of the Troy
New open-world map, the second part of Greece
New boss fights
A new and improved co-op mode rendition based on fighting enemy waves in arenas
More Group AI Action (GAIA) attacks
New enemies
Skill tree alteration
Multiple save slots
Achievements
Once the full game is released, it will be ported to Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles somewhere in Q3. There are also plans to optimize it for Steam Deck. The game will also be later expanded with new free content for you to enjoy.
With all of these new features, let us not forget about everything we've already done! "Achilles: Legends Untold" has visibly changed during the last year, be it the map locations or the amount of content, including various enemies, weapons and items.
OLD and NEW
The game’s release in Early Access in May 2022 gave us a great opportunity, specifically a chance to involve the people that we’re developing the game for (that’s you!) in our work. Player feedback is a greatly valued thing here at the Dark Point Games studio, because it helps us make something that everyone can enjoy.
Thanks to you, the game received some great additions, for example the in-game map, but also balance improvements (including the difficulty and shrine placement) and bug fixes based on your reports.
We’ve also realized that because of the isometric view, “Achilles: Legends Untold” might resemble some titles, like for example “Titan Quest”, so we want to make it clear - the game does not belong to the Hack and slash genre. It has slower combat and relies mainly on the stamina bar, which forces the player to act more thoughtfully and be careful with each move.
You’ve been a great help so far. We’ll continue to listen to you while we progress with the development of “Achilles: Legends Untold”.
Not only did the game expand, but so did our team! In the beginning, only 4 people were working on the game, and now there are 20 of us! We're still a modest indie studio, but we're steadily gaining momentum and growing.
This was also the first season in which we, as Dark Point Games, were able to present our game at a fair. What an experience it was for us! "Achilles: Legends Untold" was shown at some of the biggest European fairs – Gamescom, EGX London, Poznań Game Arena and Paris Games Week.
It was amazing to meet all these people and feel the atmosphere of common passion between everyone we've talked to. We're already looking forward to more opportunities to see you, our players, and show you all what exciting new features we're working on now.
We feel that “Achilles: Legends Untold” is really becoming the aRPG game we wanted to make, with the strategic, thoughtful real-time combat giving it a unique feel.
