Arcadia: The Crystal Wars - thoranargaming



To everyone wondering is Arcadia still in development or has it fallen into the typical Indie void. The answer is yes it is still being developed.


I started this project years ago with a very ambitious plan. I was playing a lot of Kenshi, WoW, Divinty, and I thought to myself, you know what I want to take the best parts of each of those and combine them into a new title. I want the squad based combat and base building of Kenshi, with the stylized art style of WoW/Overwatch, and the story line and lore of Divinity. Obviously a lot for just a one person development team.

Despite the challenge, I was making a lot of progress and was able to get the game into a demo state for one of the Steam events. I'd say I got the game 90% of the way there from a technical buildout, the rest was populating it with content. This is where things got even more complicated. After a lot of failed attempts to get outside designers and artists to help support, I started to second guess myself and the "fun" factor of the game. I then started to cut corners as the release date become more important than stability of the game and it's core features.

So I halted it, put up a TBD on the release date, and took a step back from the development. You can say that I'm now going back to basics to focus on the core aspects and to reduce the overall scope of the game into a more manageable package for a solo developer.

So with that, what I can definitively say is two things. Number one, yes I'm still working on it and I'm going to work towards providing more regular updates on progress. Number two, the game will most likely look and feel different than it did during the steam festival demo and in the screenshots you see. My hope is obviously that it will be better, but it will certainly be different.

To give an idea of the changes, the biggest thing is the controls and camera. In my current development build, I've switched to first person controls with a third person camera (much like WoW and others), instead of a top down mouse click style. This allows me to create a much more interesting environment and allows the player to connect more to their character and their party. You will still have a party and base building, as those are core mechanics, but the top down Kenshi style control movement was not really working out.

Thank you all who have had this wishlisted since the beginning and have watched and waited. I'm still here, Arcadia is still here, and it will be released!

  • Simplified Chinese is as it should be now. It was replaced by traditional Chinese because of a wrong code. In the future, we will support both
  • Readded texts to empty lines in the story
  • Fixed bugs that made the game stuck in chapters 2-4
  • Fixed bugs that made Level 10 units appear as level 1
  • Unit's 4th slot no longer has the incorrect white image
  • The game is now automatically locked at 120 fps instead of unlimited to prevent high GPU usage. You can freely change it later in the settings
Special scenes:
  • Fixed Grace's and Imperator's background
  • Fixed free mode where some ladies didn't have animations and voice
    Please re-download DLC 1.0.1 for the special scenes to work properly.
    We are sorry for this inconvenience.


The dev team is working hard to address bugs and balance. We are listening and collecting feedback from all players. Gems, dropped items and equipment will also be improved. We will update the game soon.

SpellRogue Playtest - Tim
We return in the new year with a SpellRogue update that we have been working on for the past ~6 weeks. Version 0.8.2 is primarily focused on tweaking and improving existing systems and replacing placeholder graphics.

We want to note that this update is potentially our last public playtest version, as we are preparing to switch to an open Steam Demo limited to a single wizard. This means we are also somewhat nearing launch, but we will share more specifics on that as we get closer.

General
  • Major Relic rework.
  • Relic cooldowns are now only usable every X turns, or require certain dice combinations.
  • Reworked & rebalanced most relics.
  • Relic at act 2 boss replaced with shard, and only a single Relic is given each run.
  • Added Artifact-draft at start of each run.
  • Starter Spells can no longer be upgraded, but utility Spells are slightly better.
  • Potions now always have only 1 usage, but are a bit stronger.
  • Reduced shard treasures from 2 to 1 shard.
  • Reduced length of each map slightly.

Graphics & UI

  • Fixed transcendency settings not saved when exiting and reopening the game.
  • Fixed generated spell descriptions having multiple periods.
  • Fixed damage previews using incorrect transcendency level for calculation.
  • Fixed dropping spells into locked spellbook slots.
  • Fixed artifact status effect tooltips missing in some cases.

New year, new House Flipper 2 sneak peeks!

This time, together with our lead designer - Tomek, we prepared an introduction to some of the mechanics you'll be able to use in House Flipper 2.
We included a couple of comparisons to let you know how our design ideas evolved and changed compared to the original House Flipper. I hope that this devlog can briefly show you why we decide to go for certain ideas, but remember... all of us working on the game are always open for your suggestions, especially now when we can still change a lot when it comes to our design decisions.

On top of that, you can see the mentioned mechanics in action (and find out more about HF2) in our recent stream highlight video, where Xibuk and Reczberg play an alpha version of the game and have a little chit chat about some of the behind the scenes secrets!

Then, somewhere around February / March, we're planning to host the second House Flipper 2 Developer Stream, where we'll show you our progress and talk about more mechanics and new features of the game. The game has been patched to fix a few bugs.

Bug Fixes
  • Fixed a bug where the Hex of Hoarding achievement was unlocking even if the symbol didn't trigger consecutively
  • Fixed a bug where Hex of Hoarding couldn't appear in the "X is 2x more likely to trigger" fine print
  • Fixed a bug where removing an Oyster with a Removal Token would crash the game if the language was set to Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, or Korean
  • Fixed a bug where the Inspect button wasn't working
  • Fixed a few icon scaling/alignment issues with the alternative fonts

Hey there girls and guys,

in this patch I fixed a lot of bugs (I know not everything is fixed but I have fixed a lot of them)
It was planned to do a forced wipe in this update but the new map that I plan to implement will take much more time to create. But I guess many of you are happy about the fact they do not have to start a new game :D

For future updates I plan to do themed updates to have a better structure in workflow.
The next update will be all about breeding animals and all the stuff that is needed for them like barns cages etc. and better functionalities. I hope I can create something very great for you.

Additions:

+ Added: Frost screen effect when the char is freezing

Helicopter Gunship DEX - Jimmy Arcade
This update fixes a few of the performance issues related to the much larger number of units on the field.

1. Updated LOD levels for all vehicles to bring the total mesh rendering down to sensible levels.

2. Updated the map icon image system to be much more performant. Surprisingly this is actually where I made most performance gains - seems my code for the radar icons etc was rubbish!!

3. Restored the IR signatures for vehicles so they are now clearly visible once again.

4. Added a helicopter image to the mission planning map so you can see where you are.

5. Allowed the mission planning map to show all detected vehicles etc

6. Removed the fading of contacts over time. Now, once you've detected a vehicle it will remain detected forever. However, the positional information will only update on a successful Radar or visual ping from the C/PG.

This doesn't effect anything at the moment as all vehicles are stationary but, in the future, when they do move launching a Radar Hellfire missile at an old or NOLOS contact may result in a miss if the target vehicle has moved far enough to be outside the Hellfire's scanning arc.

7. Improved the spread of the Apache's 30mm gun so it can engage targets a bit further out.
