The Roots of Yggdrasil team has been hard at work this Fall and the game development has been going forward as planned. We are reaching our milestones on time and adding fun new features every week!
We’ve decided Steam was the right place to share more on the development of the game and give you juicy news on what’s being done behind the scenes. But as we ramp up production, we wanted today to talk about the revamp of the Steam page.
Up until now, we had decided to reveal only small elements of the game on the Steam page and hide lots of the page in the Ginnungagap (the cloudy void that descends on the world). However, a logical problem emerged… people interested in the game wouldn’t get to see information about the game. So, we decided to update!
To start, the main goal was clear: the viewer should immediately know what the game is about. To achieve this we captured 4 updated GIFs that showcase what the game is actually like.
Additionally, we screenshotted the main phases of gameplay for the carousel at the top of the page. We’re really pleased with the overall feel of the page now and maybe we might tweak it again if we feel it’s needed to but it now features all the main elements of the game.
Version 3.72 beta is now available for all the supported platforms - Windows, Linux and OS X. OS X build was the last in line and considering the stability of Windows and Linux betas released earlier there's really no need to hesitate to opt-into this release - regardless of your operating system.
There is dozen of new features, fistful of fixes, and still more features pending to be added on our way towards the stable release which should be out still this year.
You'll find the full changelog and instructions how to Opt into the beta later in this post, but let's highlight some new features first.
Random character names
Upon character creation you can now randomize culturally relevant names for them at will. Here a Kuikka-tribe female is being created with a random name of her culture.
Harvest and pick agriculture option
The good old harvest option only cut down the crops, but now there's an option cut and pick the crops to character's inventory at one go.
Watercraft marker icons on zoomed-out wilderness map
When leaving punt or raft on the zoomed-in map the corresponding marker icon is now shown on the zoomed-out wilderness map.
Changelog
Version 3.72 (beta) for Windows changelog
- added: random character name option
Upon creating characters and choosing their name you can now randomize a culturally relevant names for them. Pressing tab or asterisk (*) will bring up random names which you can then confirm with enter, or modify at will.
- changed: name/sex/culture character creation selections order -> culture/sex/name
As the random character name option needs to know the culture and sex to pick up a relevant names these selections now come before choosing the name.
- changed: "quick and easy" character creation mode now randomly chooses also the culture and sex
Previously there was no randomization in that regard, but Kaumolais male was always chosen. Otherwise this character creation mode mode remains the same assigning rest of the options automatically and starting nearby a village.
- added: "Harvest and pick" agriculture option
The good old harvest option only cut down the crops, but this newly added option also automatically picks up the harvested plants to character's inventory. For clarification the existing "Harvest" option is now renamed as "Harvest down" in the Agriculture menu.
- added: domestic animals in the villages will withdraw from player character's way
Moving towards a domestic animal will now make it to withdraw from your way. This is to prevent the character from getting jammed eg. in small buildings with village dogs.
- modding: increased maximum number of character portraits in each category up to 250.
- added: watercraft marker icons on zoomed-out wilderness map
When leaving punt or raft on the zoomed-in map the corresponding marker icon is now shown on the zoomed-out wilderness map.
- enhanced: message about the markers at wilderness location
Instead of given information about each marker with their own message now a summary of all the markers is given in one sentence. For example: "There is a shelter, set traps and a punt at this location."
- added: confirmation to start a fire on some occasions
You will be asked a confirmation to start a fire in the following conditions: 1. There are valuable items to be burned down where you are about to build a fire. 2. You are building a fire indoors at other than fireplace location. These confirmations will prevent the unfortunate cases of accidentally setting your house or valuable belongings on fire.
- adjusted: party members fire making safety checks
From now on your companions won't ever start a fire at a location with items on the ground. Previously they might accidentally set a pile of items on fire.
- enhanced: rendering of the portraits
Character portraits are now rendered directly to the screen using the available resolution. This makes the portraits appear more crisp and clear. This enhancement affects to various game screen where portraits are being used; quest info display, list of ancestors, character profile, chat screen, etc.
- SDL update: updated to newest SDL 2.24.0
Updated SDL release includes a good deal of bugfixes which may have hampered some systems.
- fixed: sacrificing food in a container mistakenly removed the container too
- fixed: auto-cut yarn weights calculated wrong
This bug manifested itself eg. in smoking and drying cookery recipes. After retrieving the auto-cut yarn you found it heavier than expected.
- fixed: extracting fibre from retted but not dried nettles was possible
- fixed: carried weight statistics not updating immediately after cancelled crafting
- fixed: character's height in metric units displayed wrong
This was a conversion issue within character profile screen.
- fixed/adjusted: squirrels won't climb to safety in saplings
Previously they were mistakenly considered being high up in a tree even if it was a mere sapling.

Let’s get something out of the way first then. Ugh. We feel so unclean doing what we’re about to do. SORRY. SORRY EVERYONE. All the other games were posting Steam Awards links like that, so we did too. Don’t vote for us if you’d rather not, but if you do – well click on the above massive intrusive image and that would be swell.
There may well be another smaller patch, early next week, with some other minor changes – namely a few small anti-cheat measures, a fix for some modded textures and a bit of metal walls weirdness that still needs addressing.
B42 FARMING
This week we’re going over to Blair, and his current mission on overhauling our Farming system. Now, priority number one is to get things more tactile and animation-led with farming: when you use a watering can we want it through a direct mouse-click and not a maze of sub-menus.
Away from this, however, we are also making the overall system more complex, varied and interesting. Elements of this already coded into the 42 mainframe include:
Plants have growing seasons, and for most crops there are one or two optimal planting months. You’ll be able to read the best month to plant your crops on the back of seed packets, and if you plant at the wrong time of year you’ll get a reduced yield, and perhaps the risk of producing sickly plants.
Appropriate plants, such as Potatoes, can be planted using the vegetable itself.
You’ll be able to dry seed Corn and Peas to preserve them for planting next year.
Plants can accumulate slugs and snails for the player to deal with – either using looted pest control, or perhaps using a folksy remedy. Nearby slug repellent plants such as Rosemary will help too.
Rosemary is one of several herbs added as well. They tend to grow more quickly, and when harvested are knocked back a few growth stages – and then can be harvested again later. The herbs you pick can also be used to propagate new herb patches while they’re still fresh, and can be dried as well.
We are expanding the need to water your crops to houseplants. Potted indoor vegetation that players find in the world will now be living – similar, but not identical, to crops. They need to be watered, can fall victim to diseases, and will become visibly unwell before they die and become a dried husk. This also means that they will be another cool signifier of the days that have elapsed since the beginning of the Knox Event – since in time all the plants in homes, shops, the mall etc will wither and die.
Elsewhere, we’ve been seeing what animals look like without their clothes/skin on. We’re thinking that these look realistic but a little too fatty and should have a little more muscle on show – but it’s interesting nonetheless.
These past two weeks we’ve also made a lot of progress with getting the previously shelved fire system back on track, including the ability for the game to have liquid-looking Molotov fire FX on the ground. The actual visuals are going to be fine-tuned and improved soon, so we’d rather not share images of it, but rest assured it’s going to be pretty cool.
Finally, another quick bump for the Spiffo plush that Makeship are creating for us – which is something that the community has been asking for since forever: https://shop.makeship.com/3FHlgG8
If you want one you’ve got two weeks to put your order in.
In case you want to give it for Christmas then Mash has also created a certificate of gifting intent that will hopefully come in useful.
This week’s road-side (well, centre) picnic from Athena. A changelist of all our pre-release and post-release patches since the 41 beta began can be found here. The Block of Italicised Text would like to direct your attention to the PZ Wiki should you feel like editing or amending something, and the PZ Mailing List that can send you update notifications once builds get released. We also live on Twitter right here! Our Discord is open for chat and hijinks too.
