Hi everyone! Got a small update for you this week!

I'm working on a new feature to reset the sim in a way that it remembers your setup but that isn't quite ready yet so for this week it's a lot of small fixes and tweaks until that is hopefully ready next week!

The main thing in this update is UI changes. Buttons have been rearranged and new things appear to help the user figure out what's going on when they set up their simulations.



I've added a warning message for when no cops have been assigned as I've noticed sometimes users have tweaked settings and forgotten to actually allocate cops. To help with this I've also added a little prompt that appears when you assign cops and zombies so that you can tell your changes have been made.



Other changes:

City block setup screen now shows 8x8 instead of just 8 to be clearer about the size of the city that is being made.

The find person tool no longer automatically locks the camera onto the unit it finds. It still moves the camera to the person but doesn't lock it to track mode.

Moved some buttons around.

Valve Index support has now been added!!! It turned out to be a much bigger job than I was expecting. It transpired that the main menu where you start the game was not OpenXR compatible which meant that some players were facing 90 degrees the wrong way. I have tested this patch with Valve Index and Oculus Rift CV1 and it works as expected. I haven't had chance yet to test on Quest 2 but will be checking that this evening.

If you start the game and you are not facing the Beasts Shall Rise tombstone please let me know! (there is a BUGS list in the Community Hub where you can notify me of any problems)

I will be adding user options for player height, as well as controls sensitivity soon.
Gelatine - Tactical Air Horse
New learnable ability: Heal
  • Hold the left mouse button to slowly restore health, at a rate of 5 HP per second
  • Available at the very beginning of the skill tree

Black hole rework
  • This was way too powerful to be a permanent ability, so it was removed from the skill tree and turned into a rare, single-use item
  • This item drops from Metal Core boss in small quantities
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the black hole to reward the player with massive amounts of XP for "mining" tiles that are already empty

Flamethrower changes
  • Flamethrower's secondary ability is now a talent that has to be learned.
  • This is to ease the learning curve and not overwhelm the player with an extra long description of a single ability.

UI
  • Key bindings can now be changed for most actions, including the action bar slots, and key binding settings are now properly saved
  • Nodes in the talent tree are now much smaller and closer to each other, making the whole thing easier to read. Currently the whole skill tree fits on the screen without needing to scroll.

Other
  • Fixed a rare crash related to the frozen orb trying to target enemies that are already dead

After the opening of Bounty Game on the evening of November 11, UE4 reported an error due to the server failure of the new version, and then it will go back to the previous version. With all the staff of the studio, we sincerely apologize to all the players for this. Now we know this problem and are repairing it in time. The service opening time will be notified later.
Swordship - Novapichu | Thunderful


Greetings again, pilots!

Welcome to our second Swordship Dev Diary! We hope you enjoyed the last one where we introduced the team behind Swordship. This week we are taking a look at the inspiration behind the game and how we ended up with the dodge ‘em up we see today.

One of the very first elements of the game was to create a ship that moves on the surface of the water. The inspiration came from a French and Belgian comic strip called Black & Mortimer that features a similar vessel. Then we introduced the elements of pursuit, agility and dodging. That last word stayed with us and was really the cornerstone of the whole creative process.



The project went through many different versions. We were very inspired by James Bond or The Fast & Furious-movie series, and it was after watching the 2015 film “Mad Max: Fury Road” that we decided on a reversed game camera* like the one in the current version. This conceptthen unlocked a lot of things in the game design.

(*By “camera” the developers refer to the point of view that you, the player, has when playing Swordship. Often in games, the “camera” is set behind whatever person/creature/ship the player is controlling. But in Swordship, you steer your vessel towards the direction of the camera - reversing the traditional perspective.)



With early prototypes Swordship differed a lot from the game it is today. We overall went through three phases. The first phase featured an open world setting, with the camera placed behind the Swordship.



In the second phase Swordship was a smartphone game with a top-view camera:



The third and final phase featured the reversed camera that is used in Swordship as it is today:



And yeah, that was the inspiration behind Swordship - as well as the three phases we went trough while figuring out what kind of game we would (literally) launch one day! For the next Swordship Dev Diary, we will take a closer look on the enemies that you will encounter in-game - plus our thoughts and ideas behind them. So, raise your shields and dodge!
