It’s been over a month now since we released our first playable demo and we’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response we’ve had so far đŸŒș

From receiving our first piece of fan art to seeing our Discord members share gardening tips with each other, we’ve loved watching our community grow and thrive together.

Since we released our demo on August 2nd, we’ve had over 4,000 people play it, more than 300 people join our Discord, and over 150 pieces of feedback that we’ve reviewed đŸŒ±

Credit: Tom Garden

As interesting as all of those stats are, today we really want to spotlight the amazing community that has blossomed around our demo, so we’ll be dedicating this post to showcasing some community gardens and fan art while discussing how we’ll be implementing some of the awesome community suggestions we’ve received 💚

Credit: Nilar

We’ve been busy collecting as much feedback as possible from both our Steam community and our Discord community, so that we can sort through it and see which suggestions we can consider for the final game!

Some of these suggestions include:

🐾 Additional creatures that will help you with gardening tasks

💎 Buried treasure or chests throughout the map that could be found by digging

đŸ’„ The ability to shoot at pesky tumbleweeds with your magic mirror to defend against them and gather resources from them

📖 A journal to store all of the main story dialogue and the ghosts’ stories, so they can be read again later at leisure

🏡 Hedges that changed appearance based on the biomes they’re in

👒 Cosmetic clothing rewards

đŸŒ± Different types and styles of planters

While we can’t guarantee that all of these features will end up in the final game, we’ll aim to include as many as possible. For the ones that we can’t include, we’ll try to think of creative alternatives đŸŒč

So what’s on the desert horizon now for Wildmender?

We’re currently working on our first devlog, which will recap the response we’ve received on our demo in more depth, showcase video footage of some gorgeous community gardens, and provide a few more details on what we’re working on at the moment.

To finish this post, it seems only fitting to share some of our favourite quotes from the community so far:

“If I can have a pet pangolin, this game is gonna change my life” - SplatterCatGaming đŸ±

“Even though it’s just a demo, I'm already in love with this game” - Nyghtphyre 🌃

“Having that sandstorm roll over for the first time was such a treat and wild experience” - Writer_A đŸ–‹ïž

“As a forester/mycologist, I wanted to express my appreciation of the root sigil being a fungus and sharing water. This brought me a heightened level of joy” - Spring Finder 🍄

“Waits patiently for more game” - MicroFish 🩈

Hearts of Iron IV - PDX Katten
Bonjour friends, it’s your favourite Tech Lead again!
Last year already I wrote to you in the final weeks leading to the release of the Barbarossa patch, and we draw close to the go-live of the Avalanche patch, here I appear again.

Old Platforms Retirement Plan
Like the future, technology is always in motion. As new platforms arise, olders need to be taken behind the barn and put down.

Don’t worry, we’re not talking about Windows 7 (yet 😉). Despite the release of Windows 11, we have not elected to make a push to Windows 10 since Microsoft’s support for new tech on older releases is still fairly good.

The same cannot be said for Mac and Linux, sadly. And so, starting the new 1.12.0 release, the minimum OS versions will be macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa). You will still be able to play older HoI versions on older operating systems by rolling back to previous branches, but Avalanche will refuse to start.

Those updates are done in order to introduce new tech to our games (not just HoI) and ensure that all can be built on the same infrastructure within the studio.

New Defaults
Last year we introduced the option to run the game with DirectX11 rather than the venerable DirectX9. After a long period of observation and very few issues observed, we have decided to make it the default.

The first time you start the Paradox Launcher on Avalanche, the game will perform a one-time upgrade of your settings from DirectX9 to DirectX11. New installations will also default to DirectX11.

If you notice any issue due to this change, first, please make a bug report, and then simply go to the settings page and set the renderer back to DirectX9.

Visually the game should look absolutely the same, but internally the tools that come with DirectX11 have helped us find a few sneaky graphical bugs that will be fixed in Avalanche, such as weird white squares appearing on the side of some tank models.

Performance Improvements
This is I bet the bit most of you were waiting for, the usual question of “will the new patch make the game run faster than previous versions?”. And I’m happy to say the answer is yes.

The biggest improvement has been made to the map icons rendering (unit counters, factories, supply hubs, you name it). The number of icons potentially displayed on the map had grown a lot since HoI’s release 6 years ago and the historical algorithm wasn’t cutting it anymore.

For example, here are what the FPS and frame time look like on Avalanche on my work desktop (i7700, NVIDIA GTX 1060, vsync off and 150 fps cap):

Avalanche default zoom

And fully zoomed out:

Avalanche zoomed out

Finally zoomed back in, but with Speed 5:

Avalanche at speed 5

(If you forgot last year’s dev diary, you can pop up the ingame profiler by typing imgui show profiler in the debug console).

Contrast those numbers with the ones from the current live build (Barbarossa 1.11.13):

Barbarossa default zoom

Note that Barbarossa denotes rendering performance in “render time” rather than “frame time”, which is only the GPU part, while Avalanche counts both CPU and GPU rendering time, so the numbers look different.

Barbarossa zoomed out

Barbarossa at Speed 5

Since PDS games from HoI’s generation tie up rendering and game simulation, this will translate in faster tick speed (on top of a few smaller performance optimizations we added to the simulation itself). Although, to be clear, faster rendering does not translate perfectly in faster game speed. It mostly means a more fluid experience when playing (especially unpaused in Speed 4-5), and then some improvement to the speed of the game simulation.

Speaking of which, I have read and seen a bunch of “guides” to HoI performance over the past months sharing tips & tricks on how to improve the game speed, so let me give you mine: consider disabling VSync in your graphics settings, unless you have a high refresh rate monitor.
The way the game simulation waits for rendering to be done to continue, with a slow refresh rate your CPU might end up spending precious time waiting on your monitor VSync which is not ideal. This root of the issue is difficult to address on HoI4 especially with DirectX9, but with DirectX11 becoming the default we will see if there is a way we can address this in the future. No promises though.

Final Thoughts
Last year I had some extra French content to show, but I’m afraid this patch I was a bit short on time to bring you more. Although if you like Tech and History, I recently wrote a technical presentation on how to crack Enigma on a modern computer, with a focus on bringing the works of Marian Rejewski to light (as he and the Polish Cipher Bureau tend to be left aside in favour of Alan Turing and Bletchley Park in many stories). There’s no recording available yet, but I’m scheduled to deliver twice more this year at tech conferences so they’ll be on Youtube eventually.

Speaking of Poland, have you all found my secret event in Barbarossa yet? 😉

That’ll be all for today, but I’ll be happy to answer your questions, tech or otherwise!

Sky Haven Tycoon - Airport Simulator - Real Welders
Hello there!

After long and rigorous testing, we are now ready to roll out our biggest update yet! A new stage for the game with a new era of aviation.

First of all, we would like to say a big THANK YOU to our community. Your efforts in beta testing this update have been invaluable. This release would hardly have been possible without you.

New era
Meet the heyday of the turbojet era and the massive emergence of large wide-body aircraft. This means even more passengers and cargo. To serve such a large flow, you need a well-established infrastructure. Therefore, we have added more research on modern facilities and vehicles.

Finally, we've added more modern cargo facilities for the past and new eras. Now cargo liners can be unloaded not in a building from 1930, but in a more modern facility with a bigger number of unloading spots.

New user terminal feature
One of the most anticipated features is here. Now you can plan and build a terminal with as many gates as you need. The terminal can be built with a rectangle tool or a poly tool for more complex shapes. The already built terminal can be edited, changing its shape to achieve the required shapes and sizes.

In addition, passengers themselves finally pick up their luggage from the baggage belts. We've also added amenities to satisfy the needs of passengers: Coffee, Newspapers, an Info booth, and others.

Bug fixes and performance improvements
We once again thank everyone who has been with us for these months in the beta branch.

We managed to significantly improve performance (and we will improve it a little more very soon), reduce the size of save files, and fixed literally hundreds of bugs.

If you need more information, please check the patch note here.

DarKnot - princeardayfio
Today we will talk about the weather, the diary, early access and the cardboard virus.

Weather and time of day

In the world of DarKnot, weather and time of day operate according to unknown laws. Are they controlled by someone or something?

How do the time and the weather react to the game events?

The answers are not found yet. But, as everyone knows, thick fog and darkness are filled with many dangers ...

The diary? This is what you need!

It's not uncommon for players to start by looking for clues in the diary -- they're doing absolutely the right thing. In the diary, you can check your vital signs, find out information about enemies and find clues on what to do and where to go next. The diary will always be with you, it will help you find answers to many questions. You can also find tarot cards in it or, for example, learn how to create explosives.

As you progress, you will insert the pages you find into the diary, and you will be able to better understand the intricate history of the dark world of DarKnot.

Early Access

DarKnot is still in development and we plan to go into early access later this year.

In early access, more locations will be available. We will optimize the game and fix all possible bugs. We also plan to add localization for German, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

Where has all the cardboard gone?

And finally, let's talk about the most important thing.

Many people believe that cardboard boxes are only good for sleeping in or for using them as coffins for the burial of allied insects who fell in battle. But you can make a lot of useful and interesting things out of cardboard. For example, cardboard zombies!

Now cardboard will take revenge on everyone who did not respect it. Perhaps it will infect opponents with a Cardboard Virus (aka CardVID) or even bite them to death. The vaccinated individuals need not worry, but just in case, wear masks in places with a large gathering of cardboard creatures.

Frogun - JB
Hi all!

Based on feedback from 1.91, we've now updated the game on the main branch to 1.92 - the beta branch also reflects this.

This continues on the set of changes already made to the game to deliver some fixes to commonly mentioned issues, such as high refresh rate instability, item persistence, and many other bugfixes.

CHANGES MADE IN THIS BUILD:

The list of changes is as follows - this list also includes fixes from 1.91:

- High refresh rate time scale fixes - FPS logic has been changed to be more frame independent, with behavior shifted to a fixed timescale. This is the biggest change and should make the game far more comfortable for many players, esp. those playing at high FPS rates who found issues with things like bouncing or grappling.

- Made items collected except for obsidian skulls persistent in a single run through death - this experimental change was much asked for by players and was implemented on our end in response to feedback.

- Made vases with coins that were collected respawn, but empty

- Shoot/Camera 45Âș snapping options

- Made “Stomp” attack by Prickly never get out of the platform

- Added a note icon on the results screen during the emblem completion phase

- Made vases which don’t contain coins to have a red colour pattern instead of green, adding a visual differentiation

- Removed redundant death areas at the start of Running with fear

- Fixed bug that prevented L's model from appearing in the bestiary

- Set checkpoint spawn camera direction to correct direction on all levels

- Fixed death animation able to trigger when resetting, which caused a timer bug

- Snowball collision improved

- Wintry shouldn't get stuck in columns anymore

- Changed Wintry’s start animation so it’s inside the ground and not floating outside

- Fixed death area in steep descent

- Made enemies restart their alert status on respawn

- Fixed bug that would cause fly enemies to not register the hit at specific angles

- Fixed Hexy’s tiara not unlocking the doppelganger medal when used against Hexy

- Dying without reaching any checkpoints resets the death counter to zero - this was a much asked for request especially among completionists and speedrunners

- Moved “Restart Level” option in pause menu to 2nd from top

- Moved camera sensitivity X, camera sensitivity Y, camera damping, drop shadow, and character normal shadow to graphics instead of gameplay

- Added "Reset to checkpoint" option in pause menu

- Fixed a bug that would prevent level music doesn’t play again after dying in some bossfights

- Added invert x-axis option to menu

- Removed coins at the start of the skull path in Pushy Hallway

- Fixed sound issue so audio channels aren’t filled in Wintry’s intro

- Removed an arc which caused Renata to get stuck under it on Trap Hall

- Made Jake jump correctly after respawning, and improved Jake race behavior on certain levels

- Fixed hollow trunk with hole collider so Renata cannot slide down the sides of the hole

- Fixed hat models still displaying a shadow if character shadows were disabled

- Made tar bubbles hook area bigger and more forgiving

- Made jump after tilted shrooms in At the finish line shorter

- Made health not get to two lines if the text is too long

- Added deadzone option (sensitvity) for movement in addition to camera if possible; also increase general movement deadzones - another much asked for change for accessibility

- Removed wrong column in Race at the topside

- Refined camera damping/smoothing behavior so it dampens the Y-axis more than X, so the camera doesn’t have the current problem of “trailing” after the player

- Added ability to skip dialogues- another much asked for change for accessibility

- Made spike vine hitboxes smaller

- Removed trees from dialogue area on Mountain Jog

- Hexy’s icon in level select is now that of a boss level

- Fixed Wintry's hitbox sometimes hitting the player when ramming into her

- Fireballs don't have blob shadows anymore

- You can't zipline towards fireballs anymore

- Various other small tweaks & QoL changes

- Fixed internal timer bug that affected all of the bosses.

- Fixed bug that prevented 45Âș Snap options to save/load correctly.

- Fixed bug that prevented Hide Timer option to save/load correctly.

- Fixed Wintry's hitbox during her floating state.

- Fixed bug that would make the input used during pause the moment the pause menu was closed.

- Coin chests’ break sound is now assigned to the sound effects audio volume slider.

- Added nullReferenceException error handlers in UI Control code.

- Renata can now shoot the Frogun twice in the air, if the first shot misses.

This update is possible thanks to all of your feedback, and more is coming soon! Thank you everybody!

And last, a big announcement!
Frogun will be on Tokyo Game Show 2022!
I'm super happy to say, that not only will it have its own booth for those of you who can assist to try, but also will be featured in the associated Steam Event, and get a special offer! :)

Finally, thank you all for keeping up with the Frogun updates, and I'm looking forward to sharing more news soon! 🐾💙
