Species 0.14.1: the Hearty Breakfast Update (that's a much better name, my thanks to the steam user who suggested it), has now been released to the Stable branch on Steam.

Eggs are the centerpiece of this update, but there's a lot more than just them to talk about. The game has undergone a lot of refinement and I've made small improvements in just about every domain. These include...

Eggs: Creatures can now lay eggs as an alternative to giving birth to live young. The primary advantage of eggs is shorter pregnancies, but it also renders the offspring vulnerable to opportunistic scavengers. Egg laying is governed by two genes: Pregnancy Length and Egg Length.

Pregnancies: Carrying a pregnancy to term now consumes a great deal more energy and time than before, making them a much more potent test of a creatures ability to gather food and survive.

Broodiness: Creatures now need to make a decision to begin a pregnancy instead of it happening upon reaching automatically. This allows adult creatures to stockpile food and seek a mate prior to doing so. (Note: parthenogenic creatures can begin a pregnancy even if they fail to locate a mate, but they will still try regardless).

Diet: The dietary spectrum can now be subdivided into grazing herbivores, browsing herbivores, frugivores, ovivores and carnivores.

Notably, at some point I made it much easier than before to maintain populations of scavenging carnivores and opportunistic predators. I'm not sure which of the many changes in 0.14 prompted this behavior, but it is welcome nonetheless.



Combat: Creatures in combat are now highlighted with big red circles, and take turns trading blows until one creature dies or flees. Predators will pounce on their prey to initiate combat, and creatures fighting over food will no longer try to kill each other.

Temperature: Exposure damage is now more aggressively applied, especially when creatures are sleeping, and creatures will be able to seek shelter under shade-giving tree's to negate up to 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit).

Fatigue: Creatures get sleepy earlier than before, resulting in shorter but more frequent naps. This also gives them more ability to seek shelter before exhausting themselves and losing the ability to move.

Ambient Sounds: Biome-specific ambient soundscapes, plus a few for altitude, shores and underwater.

Procedurally Generated Fur: Fluffiness continues to be fluffy.



Mass Creature Suggestions: Creature suggestions are no longer limited to the 'Play as Creature' mode. You can give an entire population of creatures the same suggestion by selecting them all and right clicking on a target.



Regrowth-based Population Control: The option exists for population control to adjust plant regrowth speed instead of food efficiency. This is likely to result in larger population booms and crashes than the default, but is also more realistic.

Thought Log: Press 'T' while a creature is selected to show the thought log. This was intended purely as a debug tool to help me diagnose AI problems, but I enjoy how it gives the creatures a voice and will probably refine it somewhat in the future to make it part of the game proper.

Stability Improvements: 0.14.1 is significantly more stable than the 0.13.X releases were. Almost all known crashes and a great many unintended behaviors have been fixed.

There are still some known crashes that can happen with low performance, so I recommend keeping the FPS in double digits for best results.

Note: By far the most effective way to keep FPS high is to reduce the creature cap.

Technical Changes: 0.14.1 is built on .Net Core and Monogame 3.8, which is substantially different from the older versions. I'm not expecting any issues stemming from this on Windows, but the Linux and Mac builds are untested. If you're running the game on a Linux or a Mac and have any troubles, please get in touch.

1. SMG - [UMP9] technical test is added, Muzzle, Magazine, Grip can be equipped and Red Dot Sights, Holo Sights, 2x Scope, 4x Scope can be adapted.
2. Aug 31st - Sep 13th, completing missions to receive firearm [UMP9].

[Devil Mine]
Brand new mode [Devil Mine] will be launched after this update. Base on individual basis, the new gameplay can obtain points through mining, the player who finally obtains the Devil's Eye and successfully escape is the winner.
Mode opening time: Aug 31st 2022 after maintenance - Sep 30th 2022 11:59pm.

Game Rules:
1. [Devil Mine token] is needed for playing this mode. No equipment and materials will be dropped. And player level needs to be higher than Lvl.7 to participate on the mode.
2. Players can obtain points through mining, different points correspond to different equipment and materials. When the points reach 10, player can get the Devil's Eye, successful escape with Devil's Eye is victory. Other players need to prevent the player with Devil's Eye from escaping.
3. New gamplay [Mining] is added to the mode
4. [Devil Mine token] can be obtained in [Redeem] shop with 2000 Cash, limited to 3 purchases per day. Tokens will be automatically recycle after the mode is over.

1. [Quality Inspector Certification] is added. Complete the inspection missions every week to get the certification rewards when you log in the second week.

[Adjustment]
Team rules is adjusted:
1. Players below lvl.7 can only play in teams with players below lvl.7.
2. Players above lvl.8 can team up with players of higher level to participate in the game.

[Fixed]
1. The performance issue of the elevator at the Red Beach Foundation is fixed. And the issue of jumping out of the elevator to go upstairs is also fixed.

Maintenance on the 1st of September is finished at 18:50 (UTC+9).

On the 1st of September, Counterside will be placed under maintenance to ensure manageable levels of CSE for every CEO.

【Blue Bridge Mk.2】



After the update on the 1st of September, CEOs will be able to construct Blue Bridge Mk.2!
In order to construct Blue Bridge Mk.2, CEOs must have cleared the Emergency Call.

The fourth Shadow Palace will be opened after the update!
Stronger enemies and higher rewards are waiting!




To challenge our CEOs even further, a relic challenge will be opened after the maintenance on the 1st of September.

Here, CEOs will be able to gather materials to craft high-tier pieces of equipment!

The only requirement for CEOs to enter the dungeon is to clear the Main Stream episode 5.

In this update, only stage 1 of the relic dungeon will be opened.




After the update, all the guide missions will be integrated into the TASKFORCE Plan.

CEOs who have already cleared the guide missions will be able to participate and clear the TASKFORCE plan once more to get all the rewards.



CEOs will now be able to negotiate salaries with their employees in a more simplified fashion after the update.



Sigma’s event episode, Left Behind Alone, will be added to the ‘Side Story’ tab permanently after the update.



Following updates were made to Strategy Battle:

a. The defeat notification mail will no longer be sent.
* A successful defense notification mail will still be sent.

b. Blind condition adjustment
– Number of blinds applied in ranks from Master 2 to Grandmaster 1 is adjusted from 4 to 3.
– Blinds from Diamond 1 and below will no longer apply.
– Blinds applied when looking at the opponent’s defense squad will be adjusted advantageously to the “viewer.”

■ If the viewer’s rank is higher than the opponent’s, the blind rule will be applied based on the opponent’s rank.
■ If the viewer’s rank is lower than the opponent’s, the blind rule will be applied based on the viewer’s rank.

Example 1) If my rank is Grandmaster 1 and the opponent’s rank is Challenger 1, and if I am viewing the opponent’s defense squad, then the opponent’s defense squad will have 3 blinds (Challenger’s blind count is 4).



Example 2) If my rank is Grandmaster 1 and the opponent’s rank is also Grandmaster 1, and if I am viewing the opponent’s defense squad, then the opponent’s defense squad will have 3 blinds (Because we both have a blind count of 3).



Example 3) If my rank is Grandmaster 1 and the opponent’s rank is Diamond 1, and if I am viewing the opponent’s defense squad, then the opponent’s defense squad will have no blinds (Because Diamond 1 and below have no blind count).



c. Deployment cost recovery rate adjusted
– Defence squad (Defense, Revenge, NPC) deployment cost adjusted from +30% to +15%.




The safety zone is defined as an area where the ship takes damage instead of the units. The safety zone was designed to allow the defensive side to cope with the incoming opponent’s units. However, through the years of service, new tower class units were added to the game, some of which were very powerful. Unless we decide to stop making tower class units, we thought it would be impossible to change the meta just by individual balance change.

With this update, the minimum deployment location point of the units in the gauntlet will change.

However, the overall field area for a deployed unit to move around will be the same as before, so units going behind the safety area due to knockback or an opponent entering inside the safety zone will stay the same.
