Hi all, recently we have been working on making our games launch on Steam Deck and we have first results:
(the photo is courtesy of Micah - thank you very much for all your help!)
It required re-implementing substantial portion of our graphics rendering engine and we still have a few edges to smooth out. Aside from that, Steam Deck is quite flexible in terms of controls and our game can use both touchpads as well as the main touchscreen.
For the brave souls that want to try it on Steam Deck:
we have tested it on Proton Experimental as of 2022/08/19 (not Proton default!)
go into Compatibility mode and set it to Steam Linux Runtime
The editing tools for Primal Carnage: Extinction have received a new update! The Extinction Editor (SDK) is used for creating and testing custom content and is available to all owners of the game.
Highlights
August 2022's SDK release includes the most recent updates to the game's master shaders, textures and more. Various new character content and environment assets have been added.
There may also be some work in progress changes that are currently undergoing prototyping / testing at the moment. Please remember that these elements are unfinished and subject to change. For example, the new primary weapon for Pyro appears on BasicTesting map as a pickup - it is an early prototype from a while ago and we've since changed it quite a bit. More info below...
New Assets
One of the major additions in terms of character content is the brand new feathered Novaraptor model created in collaboration with community artist Mr. Troodon.
This model is designed to work exclusively with feathered Novaraptor skins and is compatible with mutations, but cannot be used as the basis for a mutation. All feathered Novaraptor skins now use the new 4K base texture set which has much more detail and clarity than before.
Royal Acro is a new premium skin that is now included in the SDK, you are free to make new variations of the skin colours and patterning but model changes will not be accepted.
Royal Acro also uses high resolution base textures similar to the new feathered raptor model and is another Mr. Troodon creation. For the sake of game performance, we will not accept skins that modify the base textures for Royal Acro, only regular skin variants.
Aside from character content, there are additional environment details such as decal effects and foliage variants included in this SDK release as well, though some of these may be missing their final materials and collision currently.
Shader Updates
The master dino shader has been updated again, with various optimizations. Certain advanced functions may no longer be supported such as the Swizzle effect for dinosaur skins, which did not appear correctly when the camera was further away or at lower resolutions.
The feathered Novaraptors now actually have their own master shader, with bespoke effects such as rippling motion along the surface. This will be expanded on in future, and may be extended to the Oviraptor as well in a later update.
Static water materials now have a small amount of motion by default, bobbing up and down. This is still being tweaked for a future update, along with the water shader as a whole. Some water surfaces may act a little strangely until the process has been finished.
Experimental
You may see a few work in progress assets and features in this SDK build. We are in the midst of both a large rework for consoles and preparing the next content updates that will appear further down the line, so early prototyping is underway for the upcoming human weapons and other feature tweaks.
Pyro's combination incendiary grenade launcher / slug shotgun is still being worked on and has seen several iterations since the version you see in-editor was made. We're rolling this out to Open Testing soon along with some bigger rehauls to dinosaur movement replication and hit detection. We'll be making big changes in these areas ahead of the console relaunch, which should be a huge improvement for moment to moment gameplay on both platforms.
Oh, and ragdolls might be just a tad more lively now...
Install Size
We have worked hard to bring the footprint of the actual game down to under 10GB in size, however!
Please remember that the SDK tools install size is much larger than the actual game, and requires a more powerful machine to run. With the latest update, you will need around 45GB to install the toolkit.
Make sure you have enough space before updating and that you have the Recommended requirements for Primal Carnage: Extinction before running the editor for the best experience.
You will likely need to compile shaders on your first launching the SDK, this is a background process that will take anywhere from a couple of minutes to an hour depending on the hardware you are running. Using an SSD is advised.
Looking Ahead
As mentioned previously, we are slowing down updates on the PC version while we work to enhance the PlayStation side of things. It might be a bit longer until the next game update, but we're in the middle of some huge overhauls that should vastly improve the experience.
Right now we're expecting the next major update on Steam to be this October, which is when the franchise celebrates its 10th anniversary!
PCE will be hitting the Version 3.0 milestone, which will be a much more polished version of the game with a lot more fixes and quality of life improvements. The next SDK release will probably arrive around this time as well, along with a bunch of special sales to mark the occasion.
We hope you'll join us in celebrating 10 years of dino themed craziness...!
Remember that this week is your last chance to submit items for the Winter 2022 event if you want to have a chance at taking part in this year's collection.
Well, this update's a little overdue at this point, wouldn't you agree?
The last update to this game was in March, 5 months ago! But enough about that. I've made a lot of changes to the game recently, I think you're going to like a few of em.
Let's go through some of the big changes real quick: -Added new Side Quests to Level 3. Included with these new quests is a new area to explore as well. This may or may not include some kind of fishing minigame. My sources haven't been able to confirm this one yet... -Replaced the Options Menu with a new one, which includes new tooltips to explain what every option does, and (hopefully) less confusion! -Added the 2 remaining hats for page 1 of the Hat Menu. Now every hat on page 1 is unlockable! (Also added 2 new secret hats as well.) -Added new difficulty options/modifiers to the game. You now have finer control over how easy/difficult your Box Partying will be. (Choosing modifiers that make the game easier will cause your score to drain over time.)
And now here's the rest of the changelog, in no particular order: -Enabled Discord Rich Presence. (Box Party now requires GZDOOM v4.8.1 or above.) -Your glowstick now changes color everytime you use the altfire. -Added a new end screen when you beat a level that shows you some stats and whatnot. (Includes special support for multiplayer as well) -Added that neat little animated transition to some of the menus. -Replaced one of the fonts with a nicer looking one. -The game now autosaves upon defeating a boss. -Added some new visuals to all the onion enemies. -Added some brightmaps to some textures. -Replaced some signs in level 3 with a new flat version of the signs that can be put on a wall. -NPC's can wear more types of hats. -All enemies have a 1/1000 chance of wearing a hat. -Improved the Metal Detector quest a bit. -All "temporary" weapons from Side Quests now use a purple ammo bar to better differentiate them from regular weapons. -Changed some icons in the hat menu. -Burn Status Effect now burns faster. -Burn Status Effect will now quickly dissipate if the subject is submerged in water. -Enemies now take 25% more lightning damage when submerged in water. -Reduced particles spawned by certain enemy attacks. -Pizza Projectiles will no longer cause enemies to bleed. -THE HAMMER's dashing attack was tweaked a bit to try to prevent them getting stuck on terrain. -Your health/armor doesn't get reset each level anymore. -Added inventory bar to the HUD. (Useless, unless a mod adds inventory items) (Imported from another mod I'm working on) -Fixed some visibility issues with the oxygen meter and score meter. -Added the libtooltipmenu library, used for the new option menu tooltips. -Added pink text color. -Replaced some default keybinds. (Only applies to new players.) -Replaced the "RESET ALL HATS" script with a new one made in ZScript that's a lot more flexible. -Added new functionality to BOXHAT to also give "RESET ALL HATS" a list of extra CVARs that should also be reset with the hats. -Nerfed Bell Pepper's walking flamethrower attack. (Can no longer randomly switch directions while attacking.) -Pizza projectiles are no longer random, they're instead based on the current rotation of the pizza enemy. -Added new water explosions (for use with the onion enemies.) -Added a wet floor sign. -Inverted the Boss Exhaust bar. -Optimized the boss code a little bit by making all bosses inherit from a new "BoxBoss" actor. -Added 4 different types of fish. This may or may not be related to the ever elusive fishing minigame. -Added new bullet trails to big exploding projectiles. -Added option to not fade boss's HP bar. -Added 2 new types of melons. -Added a new sound for completing a quest. -Added 2 new secrets to Level 3. -Added 5 more fun.
When Ishtar drops below 75% Health, she marks the Enemy God that most recently damaged her for 10s. Each time Ishtar deals damage to the marked God with a Basic Attack, she gains a stacking Attack Speed buff. If Ishtar receives a kill or assist on the marked God, she gains a Movement Speed buff. This passive has a 20 second cooldown.
Imbue Arrows
Ishtar imbues her arrows with heavenly light, enhancing her Basic Attacks in one of three ways for 5s. The three varieties include Strike Shot, a lobbed explosive arrow, Spread Shot, a volley of five arrows, and Storm Shot, a fast-paced long range snipe. Ishtar cannot hit Structures during the duration.
Strike Shot
Ishtar lobs bolts that explode in an area, dealing bonus damage. These shots may also be fired over walls.
Spread Shot
Ishtar notches additional light arrows and fires five shots in a cone. Only the center arrow triggers Basic Attack item effects.
Storm Shot
Ishtar enhances her Attack Speed and fires quick, long-range shots that deal reduced damage.
Rolling Thunder
Ishtar calls down four strikes of lightning in a line, damaging Enemies within their area. Ishtar may aim which direction the strikes travel. If an Enemy is hit by more than one strike, they are mesmerized.
Jolt
Ishtar draws her blades and charges forward, striking all Enemies in her path. If she hits an Enemy God, she stops and roots them for 1s as she backflips off of them. As Ishtar is in the air, she fires her bow, dealing damage in an area around the affected God. This shot may Crit and trigger Basic Attack item effects.
Blades of Retribution
Ishtar becomes CC-immune and summons five swords of light, firing them out in a cone in front of her. Each sword damages and cripples enemies for 1.25s. When the swords reach their destination, Ishtar may recall them to her location within 3s. If an Enemy is hit by both the initial fire and the recall, they are stunned for 1s. Each sword hit after the first deals reduced damage, resetting before recalling.

Let's travel to the Caribbean to meet threatened animal - Lesser Antillean Iguana.
Lesser Antillean Iguana
The Lesser Antilles iguana has a more blocky, shortened face than the green iguana and lacks the distinctive stripe pattern present along the green iguana's tail. The feature that most easily distinguishes these two species is the large, round scale that the green iguana has below each ear hole but which the Lesser Antillean iguana lacks.
The Lesser Antillean iguana varies in color between different island populations, but the base color tends to be gray, with green splotching on the underside. They have large pale, ivory colored scales on their heads. The jowls of males are pink and the scales around the eyes are blue. Males also have femoral pores along each inner thigh that exude pheromones during breeding season. Males are larger than females and are 40 cm (15.5 in) long, with an 80 cm (31.5 in) tail when full-grown. Females are two-thirds this size. Lesser Antillean iguanas are primarily herbivores, feeding on leaves, flowers, fruit, and growing shoots of upwards of 100 different species of plant.
Lesser Antilean iguanas are solitary animals and only interact to mate and compete over mates. Lesser Antilean iguana males have hierarchy where dominance is signaled by their coloration; the darker grey the scales, the more dominant the individual and the more likely it is for a female to be receptive to them. During the maring season, they will establish a territory and display to females by strutting and engaging in 'head pushing' behavior with rival males. If interested, a female will approach so he can mount and mate. The mother will then search for a sandy area to dig a tunnel where she will lay her clutch of eggs, which hatch after 3 months and are immediately independent. The young will reach sexual maturity at between 3 and 5 years-old.
Distribution
The Lesser Antillean iguana is found in scrub woodlands, rainforests, and mangroves throughout the Lesser Antilles on Saint Barth, Anguilla, St. Eustatius, Guadeloupe, Dominica, and Martinique. Since European settlement the species has disappeared from Sint Maarten, Saint Kitts, Nevis, Barbuda, Antigua, Marie Galante, and Îles des Saintes.
Conservation
The Lesser Antillean iguana is a critically endangered species and is found on the IUCN Red List. The Lesser Antillean iguana is legally protected from hunting throughout its range, but enforcement of these regulations is extremely difficult and therefore limited. Other threats include habitat loss to agriculture and development and the introduction of feral predators such as dogs, cats, and mongooses.
The species' greatest threat is from its own relative. The green iguana has been introduced to the Lesser Antilles as an invasive species and directly competes with the Lesser Antillean iguana for food and resources. In addition, the green iguana has been interbreeding with the Lesser Antillean iguana and this hybridization has been the number one reason for the latter species' decline on numerous islands (Basse Terre and Grande Terre (Guadeloupe), St. Barthélemy, Martinique) or complete disappearance (e.g., Les Iles des Saintes). Also on St. Eustatius hybridization has been observed. After a group of green iguanas washed ashore after hurricane Luis in 1995 on the island of Anguilla, the endemic Lesser Antillean iguana population was gone within twenty years. Recently, non-native iguanas also arrived on Dominica, the last major stronghold of the species. These iguanas were translocated together with hurricane-aid supplies during the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017.
Captive Lesser Antillean iguanas are currently kept at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, the Chester Zoo, the Memphis Zoo, and the San Diego Zoo's Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species. All individuals originate from the Commonwealth of Dominica. Breeding and keeping the species in captivity is difficult. Mating and egg laying have occurred at each institution, but most of the eggs have been infertile; however, a single individual was successfully hatched at the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in 1997 and in 2000 eight iguanas were hatched. Following on from this success, 11 iguanas hatched at Durrell in 2016 and they will be sent to zoos across Europe in an effort to promote and support the urgent conservation work for this species. In 2018 four captured iguanas from Sint Eustatius were sent to Blijdorp zoo in Rotterdam, The Netherlands for a breeding programme.
