Another month of development ends and I want to give you an update about the things I've been working on.
Before we get to the actual new game content featuring the titular rats and ferrets, let's take a look at some new and updated systems.
Game Modes
As mentioned last month I spent some thoughts on how to implement difficulty levels. I'm happy that I already managed to implement a first version of this feature upon starting a new game.
As you can see there will be 3 game modes in total: Relaxed, Adventure and Challenge.
Relaxed: You start with more health, deal more damage, and receive significantly more experience points.
Adventure: This is basically the original experience without modifiers.
Challenge: Wont be available any time soon, but I'm open for ideas here! Maybe this introduces some kind of death penalty as well.
Multiple Save Slots
While working on the new game modes I figured it would be also a good time to finally implement support of multiple save slots. So now when you select "New Game" from the main menu it will automatically create a new savegame and you can then select the slot when you "Continue".
Improved Introduction & Help Menu
Another important feature on my feedback list was the overhaul of the in-game introduction. I wanted to add something that is as unobtrusive as possible but also gives players with not much experience in this genre a good foundation to learn the various mechanics.
So I added a small tutorial window at the side of the screen that asks if you want to learn more about a specific topic. Those tutorials pop up upon specific events in the game. I think it's about 3-4 times, so not too much, but enough that every player should be able to see there's an in-game help menu with various topics that they can look into if they have questions about how the game works.
Of course there's much room for more help content in the future, but as it stands now I think it's a good starting point.
I'm very confident that the new help menu along with the Relaxed game mode ensures that more players will have a great experience no matter where they are coming from.
Immerfurt - Of Rats & Ferrets
Now for some of the new content I'm still working on, but I want to show you what I've come up with so far.
Immerfurt is the next big settlement in the southern part of the map. Rats and ferrets both try to make it a place of prosperity, trade and crafts. However, both tribes are not always completely united in their worldview, which increasingly leads to conflicts between the business-minded rats and the craft-skilled ferrets.
Immerfurt is also the home of two guilds that the player can join: The Adventurer's Guild and the Mages' Guild.
Both offer a questline with some unique rewards, but this will be further developed during the Early Access phase and I'll share more info once the time is right :)
Player Stash Container
Last but not least, I also added a special, persisted chest for you, where all "too good to be sold" items can go in!
That's all for this busy month! I hope you like the new additions!
If you want to learn more about upcoming features, you're very welcome to join our growing Discord server. I'm posting there frequently about development or discuss new ideas. I'd love to see you around :)

And we have another cool announcement to make, ZOR will be a part of Yogscast’s Tiny Teams event August 1-8! Check out the livestream on Twitch to see new ZOR gameplay as well as other games from small studios. In preparation for these events, the ZOR demo will end this weekend.
We’re looking forward to sharing ZOR with you all and hearing your feedback! If you haven’t already, make sure to wishlist the game here on Steam and follow us on Twitter for updates.
Today, we decided to delay the launch of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide to November 30th for PC. Xbox Series X|S will launch shortly after PC, with a specific launch date to come.
Delaying a game is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions a developer faces and one we are not excited about making. Still, we hope this speaks to our commitment to taking the time necessary and doing whatever it takes to get you the best possible game.
While we have been humbled by the great feedback on the game so far, we also need more time to improve stability, performance, and to mature key systems. Each is critical to making sure we have the best possible experience for you, the players.
We also want to invite you on this journey.
Soon, we will start a series of technical tests and betas in advance of our launch, to ensure we deliver the best version of the game. If you’d like to participate, you can sign up for a chance at https://www.darktide.live/signup
Thank you for all the excitement and appreciation you have shown us thus far - it really does mean the world to us.
Whispers in the West - Co-op Murder Mystery - Infinite Whys
Hello,
Thank you for supporting Whispers in the West so far. We’ve now launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to continue the development and create some new stories.
Why a Kickstarter campaign?
We released a demo of the game on Steam in June. On the back of the positive comments we received from our players, we’re raising funds to create three new co-op mystery stories. If you’ve tried the demo, these new scripts will be in a similar format as the ghost story. Each of these stories will be an hour-long mystery, for up to four players to solve together.
Pledges start from as little as £20 (early bird discounts available until 4 Aug) and, as long as the campaign is a success, you’ll get a bundle of all three new game scripts (equivalent to three mystery parties for up to four players). We aim to deliver the stories by Q1 2023.
⬇️ Hear what the developers say about the campaign ⬇️
We’ve also hand-picked some unique merchandise for our early supporters:
A set of five Wild West postcards, featuring art taken from various locations in the game:
With a little thank you message on the back:
Exclusive 500-piece jigsaw:
Super limited-edition silver Sheriff Badge, made from 925 sterling silver:

For far we’ve introduced each of the four playable heroes, as well as their mystical guide, Wu Yun, Emissary of the Shen! Today we’ll be taking our first look at another member of the HMS Barfleur’s rugged crew, Quartermaster Robert Garfield.
Setting up shop in one of the many coastal caves along Shipwreck Beach, Robert manages the ship’s supplies with his assistant Wallace, ensuring that everything is accounted for and rationed accordingly.
The Rat of Wallstreet
While Wallace is busy snoozing fixing up the bridge to open a new path forwards, Robert runs the shop offering up merchandise, for a price… After all, with supplies in short supply and high demand, Robert can’t just go giving things away for free! Instead he’ll ask that you pay for his wares using standard pirate currency, Gold.
There are several ways to acquire Gold in Curse of the Sea Rats. The first, and most straightforward method is by defeating enemies. Most foes will drop a small quantity of treasure that you’ll gradually accumulate over time. Beware though as not all enemies will have deep pockets, so there’s no guarantee that you’ll come away any richer from every fight!
The second method is by discovering and opening chests that are spread across the map. Some chests can be found in plain site, while other are deviously hidden… Watch out for booby-trapped chests that contain a nasty surprise!
The best thing about Gold is that unlike Spiritual Energy, you’ll retain all your hard-earned loot even when defeated!
Quis Est Iste Qui Venit?
Much of what Robert sells will be invaluable in your quest as you tackle the dangerous crew of pirate witch, Flora Burn.
From Health and Energy Nostrums that keep your heroes fighting fit, to the humble Return Whistle, which transports your party back to the Quartermaster’s location, Robert has plenty of intriguing single use and consumable items available. He also stocks a reserve of rarer items such as Spotless Mind Tonic that resets an individual’s skill tree and returns all spent Spiritual Energy back to your inventory, just the thing if you feel like changing your approach to a new challenge.
It’s worth noting that your heroes can only hold a limited quantity of each consumable item. So, if you’re gearing up for a gruelling boss battle, you’ll need to be careful to preserve your stock of precious healing items as you make your way to a bosses’ area.
It remains a mystery as to how Robert was able to get hold of some of his more well… unusual items, but it’s always worth considering the breadth of what he has to offer as certain curios might come in handy, particularly when you encounter certain characters further inland.
I Know a Shortcut!
There are plenty of other interesting items, consumables, and collectables to find during your adventure. Cups of Tea,Sandwiches, and various other snacks are fairly common, but it’s probably best not to think about how long they’ve been hanging around!
You can prioritise and assign up to four items to the Quick Shortcut menu. This menu can be accessed on the fly and allows you to quickly gain the upper hand in combat or replenish your health and energy if you find yourself in a sticky situation.
Keep an eye out as Robert also likes to move around, seeking new business opportunities across the map as you blaze a trail forwards!
And so concludes our spotlight on the HMS Barfleur’s amicable Quartermaster! We hope you’ve enjoyed learning more about his role in Curse of the Sea Rats, and feel much better prepared to take on the challenges that lie ahead!
We’ll be back in a few weeks' time with another update, until then!
Apologies that this took langer than anticipated, but with this small hotfix all new content is now also localized in all supported languages. Thank you for playing!
Greetings from Cogwheel Games & Daedalic Entertainment
