This update protects your scores against possible data loss on Steam's end, and fixes a bunch of UI bugs reported by our Discord community.

To follow up on our last update post, another leaderboard data loss was detected last night. This time we were able to restore almost everything on our end from our backups. If any of your scores are still missing, they will be detected and re-submitted when you view leaderboards in-game.

  • Attempt to re-submit leaderboard entries using local backups of scores
  • Added support for remotely restoring leaderboards from our backups
  • Fixed leaderboards getting stuck in an invalid state if a score was queued to submit between sessions
  • Fixed a bunch of mouse interactions in the campaign menu / leaderboards

It’s been just under 4 weeks since Core Keeper launched in Early Access. Since then, the game has accrued over 1,000,000 hours watched on Twitch! We’ve had an amazing time watching your videos and checking out your screenshots, and we can’t believe how funny and talented a community we’ve got.

Robert here, this time to talk about - Steam Deck!



Yup, that's right: we got the opportunity to test our game on Valve's fancy new piece of hardware, and I have to say: it's a pretty powerful device, and with all the optimizations we'd already done for the other consoles, The Hand of Merlin already runs on Steam Deck at a smooth 60 FPS.

Some of you - the lucky ones - may already have a Deck in their hands, and if you do, you'll notice that Valve assigned us a yellow "Playable" tag. But over the last few days, we've been working on getting the few reported (minor) kinks out, so that we can have that nice green "Verified" tag.

So let's unpack the journey of porting to Steam Deck, as short and pleasant as it was.

First things first, we've already been working on supporting Linux natively. Although we haven't ticked the box to make this official on the store page yet, the native Linux (and macOS) executables have been available for some time now, and a few of our dedicated fans have been helping out with compatibility testing. This means we do not require Proton (a Windows emulation layer) to run our game on SteamOS / Steam Deck. In other words, there's no risk of an emulation layer introducing bugs or instabilities, plus there's zero overhead, which improves both performance and battery life.

Secondly, the biggest gruntwork was updating our Steam API support from a fairly old version (that came by default in Serious Engine 4) to the newest one required by Steam Deck. This allowed us to correctly identify the input controls: both the touchscreen and the gamepad, and I have to say - planning ahead really helped us out here. With Steam Big Picture mode already supported via our dynamic UI scaling system, font legibility was no issue at all. Having already done full gamepad support, once we updated the Steam API, the controls also Just Worked(TM).

Fortunately, Serious Engine also already has built-in support for touch input, and it helps that our UI does not require more than a single mouse button for most operations. There was just one small but important tweak we had to do: if using the touchscreen, you now always get a small confirm / cancel button before executing a move or attack action. This really helps prevent mistaken actions.

On top of this, our engine works just fine with multiple input sources, so switching between the touch and gamepad controls on the Steam Deck felt really smooth and seamless, so much so that I found myself using the right analogue stick for quick and precise camera panning, and the touchscreen for most UI interactions.

And finally, as I talked about in a previous blog post, we had done some significant optimizations in a push to bring the game to consoles. To properly support Steam Deck's hardware, all we had to do was correctly identify its GPU and set up appropriate default graphics settings. And voila - smooth, stable 60 FPS! Well, unless of course you limit the FPS from the Deck's Quick Access menu in order to preserve battery. But even if you do - the visuals won't change. The game will look just as good, but the battery will last longer.

After the division of Czechoslovakia followed by an economic crisis, Slovak tank builders found themselves on the brink of bankruptcy. Tank plant ZTS Dubnica initiated an upgrade project for the Soviet T-72 series MBT in order to make the tank interesting for both domestic and foreign operators. By 1993, together with the French company SFIM and the Belgian SABCA, a project was developed to modernize the T-72M1 tanks with a new VEGA fire control system, a new panoramic sight, an improved engine, domestic ERA protection and two gunpods with 20-mm KAA-200 guns on the turret’s sides. The built prototypes of the new main battle tank were designated T-72M2 Moderna. Later, the tank was equipped by a new DYNAS explosive reactive armor, and two 20-mm guns were replaced with one 30-mm 2A42 cannon. Only a few prototypes of the T-72M2 Moderna were built.



In our game, the T-72M2 Moderna will become the main “tank” prize of the War Thunder “Battle for arachis” spring crafting event, she will be a new MBT in the USSR armored vehicle research tree at rank VI. The T-72M2 Moderna is a rare combination of Soviet and Western tank building technologies. The French and Belgian partners of the Slovak plant ZTS supplied the tank with a modern computerized fire control system VEGA with a ballistic calculator, a thermal imager, and a new panoramic commander's sight.



The tank received improved protection - the Slovak DYNAS explosive reactive armor effectively protects not only against shape-charged rounds and missiles, but also partially from kinetic rounds. In addition, the T-72M2 Moderna also received side and back rubber screens and grills, which improved the tank’s protection against ATGMs and chemical rounds. In addition, the survivability of the tank has increased thanks to the laser warning system. You will definitely notice the Soviet 30 mm 2A42 cannon on the turret’s side, which is very effective against light vehicles and helicopters. The mass of the tank has grown compared to the basic T-72M, but the new uprated engine fully compensates for the increase in weight.



The main gun is a slightly modified version of the well-known to our tankers Soviet 125-mm 2A46M cannon, but the Slovak TAPNA round is all-new to the game. This armor piercing fin-stabilized round is capable of armor penetration of just over 500 mm. For rank VI, it's just awesome!

You can get perhaps the most charismatic T-72 in the game simply by completing tasks of the “Battle for arachis” crafting event, which starts tomorrow, April 7th. The full list of prizes and the rules for participation in the event will be announced in our news today!

Noteworthy bug fixes:

  • MP: A bug was fixed where the end screen did not show if a player had left the game
  • MP: A blocker for the last wave in Cathedrum and Refinery has been fixed
  • MP: An issue with the lobby was fixed where disconnecting players were not removed from the instance.
