KARDS - The WW2 Card Game - Thomas


We continue to expand our series of historically themed updates with a new episode on March 31st. This fourth installment focuses on the famous Battle of the Bulge and brings new cards for the main adversaries in this battle, Germany and the USA. The general theme is, as the name suggests, the last major offensive of the Germans in the West and the largest battle of the USA during World War 2.

Before we go further into the details of this update, let’s have a quick look at the historical Battle of the Bulge.

Battle of the Bulge - Brief history

The Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes region of Belgium was Germany's last major offensive in World War II against the Western Front. This battle lasted for six weeks from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945.

Over one million troops were involved (some 500,000 German, 600,000 American, and 55,000 British troops): the Battle of the Bulge is known as one of the largest and bloodiest battles in the history of the USA.

The initial attack by Germany, with almost 410.000 troops, took the allies by surprise as the German battle preparations were conducted in utter secrecy. The attack was timed in favor of the Germans as the Allied forces were fatigued after the breakout from Normandy and southern landings in France, their supply lines were stretched far, and their supplies were running low. However, the Adennes with their hills and dense forests, gave the allied defenders a distinct advantage.

Even though the Allies were somewhat taken by surprise by the initial attack, their strong resistance, superior terrain, and logistical problems on the German side slowed down the advance of the attack. Still, at the peak of the attack, the Allied defensive lines were considerably bulged with German advances up to 70 miles into their territory, hence the name of the battle.

However, due to their stiff resistance, the Allies had enough time to relocate massive reinforcements to the battle. As a result, Germany lost the advantage and subsequently all their gains were erased one by one. The overall loss was immense with almost 200.000 casualties in total.

At the end, this final offensive depleted Germany of experiened troops, valuable war material, and accelerated the collapse of the Nazi Reich.

Battle of the Bulge - In KARDS

With this history in mind, this update focuses on the last major offensive of the Germans and will arrive with some beefy new units. The USA, of course, will see reinforcements as well - fitting to the theme.

The Battle of the Bulge update comes with 18 total cards, of which 7 are entirely new. Similar to the previous updates in this cycle, there are several options to receive the new cards:

  1. Get the standard Battle of the Bulge bundle for in-game gold or diamonds
  2. Get the premium Battle of the Bulge bundle for diamonds
  3. Use wildcards to create some or all of the cards you want

The premium version arrives, as usual, with a bunch of goodies, such as a new Headquarter together with a new battlefield, alternate card art, and a new unique board item. Included is also a sizable amount of wildcards.

In-game event

Following great feedback and general excitement towards the in-game event for Behind Enemy Lines, we will have an exciting in-game event for this update as well. This event is, of course, free and open for everyone.

Spoiler Season ahead

Every day until the release on the 31st, we will reveal new cards, their stats, and interesting background info.

We kick off the spoiler season with the German 989. Infantry Regiment, a unit responsible for some of the early success and territorial gains for Germany.

989. Infantry Regiment



The 989th Grenadier Regiment was a unit of the 277th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht. The regiment was formed in 1943 in Croatia, and shortly after it was relocated to France, along with the 277th Division.

In August 1944 the division participated in the Battle of Normandy where it was destroyed, but reformed in September 1944 and sent to defend against the Allied advance in Northern France and Rhineland.

After that the regiment participated in the Ardennes Offensive where it fought with the 12th Volksgrenadier Division in an attempt to capture the Belgian towns of Rocherath-Krinkelt and Elsenborn, in what is now known as the Battle of the Bulge. During the battle the regiment suffered heavy losses and was forced to retreat into Germany where it continued fighting, mostly with new and inexperienced recruits, and by the end of March in 1944 the regiment had been defeated.


Battery

An artillery battery is a grouping of artillery, mortars, rocket artillery, multiple rocket launchers, and in later years surface-to-surface missiles, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and other equipment designed to improve command and control of gunnery crews and their systems.

General Patton often commented that the US artillery won the war for them, and one example of its importance was during the Battle of the Bulge. Due to bad weather Allied air superiority was out of the picture, which meant that the artillery had to fill the void.

The US Army managed to amass around 350 guns of all calibers in the northern sector of the Bulge which was one of the largest concentrations of artillery in history. This massive firepower helped slow down the German advance and proved vital in the Allied defense of Elsenborn Ridge and Bastogne.


Bypass

German military tactics during WWII focused on maneuverability, with combined air and mechanized and armored ground attacks at the center stage.

In the opening battles of World War II, German forces ran over, through and around every enemy defensive position in their way.

Today their military doctrine is known under the term “Blitzkrieg”, but this term was rarely used by the Germans at the time as the tactic was based on Bewegungskrieg (maneuver warfare), a traditional military tactic that was known to be used by Hannibal the Great and the Romans. This tactic focuses on defeating the enemy by incapacitating their decision-making through shock and disruption.


112th Infantry Regiment

The 112th Infantry Regiment of the US Army dates back to the American Civil war and has since participated in several conflicts, including WWI and WWII.

During WWII the regiment landed in Normandy in 1944, after D-Day, where it became the 112th Infantry Regimental Combat Team (RCT). Apart from the infantry the RCT included several support units, the 229th Field Artillery Battalion, the 103rd Engineer Battalion, Company C, 447th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, and Company C, 630th Tank Destroyer Battalion.

After Normandy the 112th participated in the liberation of Paris and later the Battle of Hürtgen Forest (19 September to 16 December 1944) where the regiment was at one point reduced to 300 men during an engagement. The US soldiers nicknamed the Battle for Hürtgen Forest “the meat grinder”, and for good reason since it is the longest single battle US forces have ever fought and one of the bloodiest.

Following Hürtgen Forest the 112th RCT fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where it defended a sector of 100 km where 9 German divisions concentrated their attacks. During the Battle of the Bulge the 112th RCT managed to inflict 1600 casualties and destroy 18 enemy tanks, for which it received the Distinguished Unit Citation which is rewarded for extraordinary heroism in action.


King Tiger

The King Tiger (German: Königstiger), official designation Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B, was a German heavy tank that first entered service in 1944.

The tank saw action on the Eastern Front and in Europe and its 8.8cm KwK 43 gun and armor made it a formidable weapon. It could knock out any Allied tank that came up against it and its thick armor made it almost impenetrable for any Allied weapon.

The main problem with King Tiger was its reliability and many crews were forced to abandon the tank when it either broke down or ran out of fuel. Luckily for the Allies the tank was produced late and under the most difficult circumstances, both the bombing of German factories and lack of materials caused a series of delays and limited the production capabilities.

Only 489 King Tigers were manufactured.

■ Deathmatch

- Added Deathmatch as one of the main game mode.





| How to Play

- The match will begin when 2 players enter the arena.
> A total of 10 players can enter after the match begins.
> Players can no longer join if a team scored more than 100 points or if 8 minutes have passed since the match began.
- Players will be assigned to Red/Blue team based on the order they have joined.

- Players will be able to respawn after 8 seconds even if they lose all their HP and collapse.
> Players can change their hero while waiting to respawn.
- Players will be in Black Spirit form when they respawn, and they can move around for 5 seconds in invincible form. Press LMB to disable Black Spirit form.
- The shop (B) will not be available to purchase items.

- 5 points are obtained when you defeat an opponent player.
> If you defeat an opponent player consecutively, you obtain 2 bounty points and those bounty points reset if you die. (E.g. If you kill an opponent player with 3 consecutive kills, you’ll earn a total of 11 points. Base Points (5 pts) + Bonus Points (6 pts) = 11 pts.



| Objects

- Tree Spirits appear in four directions (north, east, south, and west) and you can recover up to HP +3,000 if you go near a standing Tree Spirit.
- As a player’s HP is recovered, the NPC falls to the ground due to losing its power. It can then recover a player’s HP again after a minute has passed.


| Victory Requirements

- The team that wins the required points first or achieves more kills at the end of the match wins.
> If the winning points are tied at the end of the match, the team that defeats an opponent player from the opposing team will win the match.

As mentioned previously from the Developer Notes, Deathmatch will now be available as one of the main game modes.
In Deathmatch mode, teams will be assigned, and they’ll fight each other in a small arena. Players won’t be as frustrated from dying in Deathmatch compared to Solo/Trio mode. We believe this mode is also beneficial since it’ll allow players to hone their skills by trying out different heroes in a short period of time.

The number of inherent skills for heroes have increased to 5 leading to an increase in combo duration and damage as well. As a result of that, we’ve increased the HP of all heroes.
Quick Reflexes was added as a general skill to allow players, who are not familiar with combos, to evade dicey situations during battle. However, this isn’t limited to inexperienced players, as seasoned players can also can use this skill to get out of unfavorable situations.
The defining feature of Quick Reflexes is that it can be used even when a player has been knocked down. We believe this skill, which is similar to Dark Shift, can be used as a survival skill to turn around a situation in one’s favor.

The Black Spirit skills were changed to diversify options in game play.
Taunt was removed since it was a skill that wasn’t used often. We changed how Dark Shift works that make it a more suitable as a survival skill, and made various changes to other skills as well.



| Stamina

- Decreased the stamina used when sprinting (Shift) by 90%.

- Decreased the stamina required to perform sprinting from more than 50 to 20.





- Added non-combat sprinting.

> Requirement: 50 stamina or more

> Non-combat sprinting will activate if sprinting (Shift) for more than 5 seconds.

> Sprinting will stop if there is less than 10 stamina.



- Changed to no longer use/restore stamina when performing basic attacks or skills.

■ Content


- Added two spawn locations of Light of Ascension.

> The spawn location of the Dark Fog, Ancient Relic, and Shadow Lords has been changed as a result of the changes made to Light of Ascension.

■ Monsters


- Changed so Margord dissipates when the Light of Ascension appears.

- Fixed the unnatural motion of Margord being applied natural damage.

- Decreased Margord’s HP by approximately 12%.
[Dev Note]
Margord (Shadow Lord) was conceived with the purpose to create unexpected events such as by intervening in a situation where only players are fighting each other or to provide a powerful buff that’ll determine the victor of the match.
But because of Margord’s high HP and defense, Margord would continue intervening battles even after the Light of Ascension appeared.
As a result, Margord will now disappear when the Light of Ascension appears, and its HP was also reduced making it slightly easier for players to defeat Margord.


■ Item


- Changed the price of Essence of Ornette from 300 Tokens to 800 Tokens.
[Dev Note]
Although Essence of Ornette cannot be overlapped with the HP Potion, it did not disappear even if was used, and for this it was considered at high value due to its advantage of being able to sell the HP Potion.
However, if you obtained duplicates, its effects could not be overlapped, resulting in players having to sell it at a relatively low price.
With this, we adjusted the selling price of Essence of Ornette so that a larger number of tokens can be acquired for players even if duplicates are obtained.

In the last update, bombs were added to bring diversity in game play. But the effectiveness of the bomb fell a little short in terms of its usability. The reason for this is because it took some time before the bomb automatically exploded, a.nd the one who planted the bomb found it difficult to determine when the bomb would explode.

For those reasons, improvements were made to the bombs, and a new item Catalyst was added to increase its usability.

- Fixed the issue where certain Blackstar Fragments and Monsters would appear in abnormal locations.

Tabletop Playground - Plasticity Studios
The March introduces a new tag system, a setting to show player heads, and lots of improvements for snap points and scripting:

• You can now add tags to objects, templates, containers, snap points, and cards. They can control if objects snap and what can be inserted into containers. Tags can also help with finding what you're looking for in the object library, card deck explorer, or container explorer. Find more information on tags in the new knowledge base page on tags.
• A new option in the game settings allows you to activate snapping when holding multiple objects
• Snap points can now have different shapes for their range: in addition to the sphere shape, their snap range can also be a cylinder or a cube.
• There are new options for snap point rotation: instead of just switching between rotation on and off, you can also set snap points to flip objects upright, upside down, or adjust their rotation to be "flat" without fixing it entirely
• A new options for snap points allow you to specify that they are only valid when the object is upright or upside down.
• While creating a snap point grid, you can now drag the grid with the mouse
• Show range for highlighted snap point whilre creating a grid
• Show a quick animation when snapping an object
• Snap range for objects with non-uniform scale are now also scaled non-uniformly
• You can now show the heads of other players. An option in the video settings allows you to activate heads only for VR players (default), for everyone, or for no-one.
• Set zoom direction for the counter 10 and counter 100 objects so they don't spin when viewed in the object zoom

Scripting
• Add methods to work with tags: `GameObject.getTags`, `GameObject.setTags`, `Container.getContainerTags`, `Container.setContainerTags`, and `SnapPoint.getTags`
• Add `getTintColor` and `setTintColor` for `ImageWidget` and `ImageButton` to allow tinting images
• Add a key parameter to `setSavedData` and `getSavedData` in `GameObject` and `GameWorld`, allowing you to organize persistent information more easily and save larger amounts of data globally and per object
• Add `GlobalScriptingEvents.onWhisper`
• Add `getShape`, `getSnapRotationType`, and `getFlipValidity` methods to `SnapPoint`
• Add `GameObject.release` method to release objects held by players
• Allow automatically wrapping text for `Text` widget using `Text.setAutoWrap`
• Execute `CardHolder.onCardFlipped` and `CardHolder.onCardRotated` when animation finished instead of when the player pressed the respective button
• Text with multiple lines on a button was not centered properly
• Inserting and removing an object from a container in the same frame caused the object to become invisible on clients
• A previously clikced UI button could be clicked when pressing enter
• `Player.getSelectedObjects` for client players only worked while holding

Fixes
• When loading a state while an active measure move was visible, the measure indicator remained visible and stuck after the state was loaded
• Snap point radius shown in editor was too small
• Some zoomed objects were rotated incorrectly when using object zoom while looking directly down
• Card stack explorer did not show web textures and could have wrong aspect ratio for cards scaled in-game
• Team chat tab sometimes wasn't visible when the local player was part of a team

Defend from Candyland! - MI Pixel
Here we have a large update introducing an in-game shop, only asking for in-game currency, to give you more to use to Defend from Candyland!

So, let's see whats in this new update!

Miss Applebee



Miss Applebee runs the new store that has been added to Defend from Candyland! Those Apples you have been collecting by defending from the onslaught of candy, use those to purchase upgrades for your existing trees. You can improve the damage of the trees you have or the slow effect of the bannana trees. As well as this, there are new trees that you can purchase to help you in your heroic fight against Candyland!

Boreal Tree



This is the Boreal Tree. It creates an area of cold designed to slow down all candies that try to pass through the snow. This will effect all of the candies within its range at the same time!

Pollen Trap



This is the Pollen Trap. Another tree that effects all the candies within its range at the same time. The high pollen count that this tree gives off causes all the sweets, except one, to stop and sneeze! Delaying the sweets some more!
