One of the toughest choices when working on Humankind was which cultures to include. We knew we would only be able to include 60 cultures in the game at release, but there are so many fascinating cultures across the globe and all of history to choose from! So even while we were working on the game, we already knew that we would want to come back after release and add more cultures.
Today, we are announcing the first DLC for Humankind, featuring six remarkable cultures from Africa (no, they are not all Merchant cultures):
So, who are the cultures included in the "Cultures of Africa" DLC?
Era 1 - Bantu (Expansionist): The first Bantu speaking peoples began their migration across Central Africa 6,000 years ago, creating many population centers. This phenomenon, referred to as the Bantu Expansion, made their language family one of the most spoken on the continent.
Era 2 - Garamantes (Agrarian): Between the 17th and 14th centuries BCE, a major ecological mutation changed the environment of the Sahara. True farmers of the desert, the Garamantes fully adapted to this hostile environment thanks to their mastery of underground waters, ensuring a thriving culture between the 4th century BCE and the 3rd century.
Era 3 - Swahili (Merchant): Scattered all along the East African coastline, the Swahili settlements were deeply connected to the trade routes running across the Indian Ocean. These lasting contacts with the world made their cities and culture flourish between the 10th and 15th centuries.
Era 4 - Maasai (Agrarian): Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Maasai established themselves as one of the main groups among the pastoral societies that dominated the land between the Great Lakes, the Great Rift and the coasts adjoining the Indian Ocean. This is where they led their herds on the vast plains of present-day Kenya and Tanzania.
Era 5 - Ethiopians (Militarist): From the 19th century onwards, Ethiopia benefited from the reigns of great rulers which allowed a significant territorial expansion. The increase in its military capacities were the basis of the Empire's resounding military successes which guaranteed its independence.
Era 6 - Nigerians (Agrarian): Nigeria has the peculiarity of bringing together in the same State an immense diversity of peoples and cultures. Since its independence it has been Africa's largest oil producer, but also one of the biggest agricultural producers, thanks to its diverse and fertile lands.
In addition to these six cultures, the DLC includes over a dozen new events (and their consequences), as well as five new wonders:
Lake Natron
Mount Kilimandjaro
Victoria Falls
Zuma Rock
The Great Mosque of Djenne
The "Cultures of Africa" DLC will be available for $8.99/8.99€/£6.99 on Steam, though you can already pre-order it for a 10% discount between now and January 20th!
We're excited to hear your stories of these cultures in Humankind,
The Amplitude Team
EDIT: Fixed typo in the price in Pound.
Note to Mac Users: The DLC is currently not available to Mac Users as we are investigating the reports of Mac users being unable to access DLC content they bought. Once this problem has been resolved, the DLC will be available on Mac.
The most important bug has been removed: when the character sat down in the carriage and got up, he found himself in the sky. Now there is no such bug.
Added snow on the ground when choosing the "Snow" weather at the beginning of the game. Now the game looks even better!
Minor changes in the route.
Update 5.0 is being prepared for release. Details will come later.
For the past year Ross has been hard at work on a full-length prequel novel to A Place in the West called Half-Life: Phase Transition. It's not yet complete and won't start releasing until the summer, but as a taste of what to expect we have made the prologue available for reading.
A. Fixed the description of Weapon Renewal Kit and Super Weapon Renewal Kit. B. Fixed the description of MYST-Mythic. C. Fixed the description of MYST-Infinity Case.
Season 8 of the Referral Program is drawing to a close, so hurry up and take advantage of your free slots for Recruits if you haven’t used them yet!
Season 8 of the Referral Program ends on January 26, 2022 and starting with Season 9, which launches on the same day, new pools of Premium vehicles will be available for Commanders and their Recruits. We also reworked the Recruit progression in the Referral Campaign, rebalanced solo mission #2, and improved several interfaces. We’re making these changes to make it harder to abuse the system while still keeping it interesting for legitimate Recruits and Commanders. Let’s dig into the details!
Reward Pool for Commanders and Recruits
Starting with Season 9, there will be a fixed roster of five Premium tanks for Commanders and five for Recruits. You can redeem any vehicle of your choice from those available. These vehicle pools below will remain unchanged for future Seasons of the Referral Program.
As always, you can choose to be compensated for the value of the tanks in credits instead.
Recruit Progression Rework
We also reworked the Recruit progression system. To earn Referral Points and complete the Referral Campaign, Recruits need to play in vehicles of certain tiers at each stage. The further you progress in the Campaign, the higher the required vehicle tier.
You can check which vehicle tiers can be used to complete each stage on the Recruit and Commander progression screens.
At the end of Season 8, all your open Referral Contracts will be automatically transferred to Season 9, and your progress will be saved.
Changes to Combat Bonuses
Regardless of whether the Recruit plays alone or in a Platoon with their Commander, the Recruit will receive a bonus to credits and XP at the end of the battle only if they play in a vehicle of a tier that matches the current referral stage. The bonuses the Recruit will receive are as follows:
When playing alone, there is a bonus of +50% to Combat XP and credits. When playing in a Platoon with your Commander, the Recruit will receive 100% more Combat XP and credits. The Commander will get the bonus when playing in a Platoon (+50% to Combat XP and credits) only if at least one of their Recruits in this Platoon receives their bonus.
Together with the Recruit progression rework, these changes will deter those who seek to abuse the Referral Program, while also rewarding responsible Commanders.
Mission Rebalancing and Interface Improvements
We also rebalanced the conditions of solo mission #2:
OLD CONDITIONS The total damage caused by the player and damage caused with the player's help must be higher than the number of hit points of their vehicle.
NEW CONDITIONS The total damage caused by the player and damage caused with the player's help must be higher than the number of hit points of their vehicle when playing in a heavy tank, medium tank, light tank, or tank destroyer, and it must be 3 times the number when playing in an SPG.
The reward for completing this mission remains the same.
We also improved several interfaces to make them more informative. For example, you can now check your progress in the Referral Campaign and find out how many Referral Points from the daily limit you can still earn.
Using Rental Vehicles
From Season 9 onwards, Recruits won’t be able to earn Referral Points or receive all the bonuses the Referral Program offers when playing in rental vehicles.
Head into battle with your Recruits and earn Premium vehicles and other rewards, Commanders!
Hello everyone. We hope that you enjoyed Christmas time in peace and stepped in the new year in good health, with luck on your heels. We also gave ourselves a few days of rest before returning to work on all the exciting stuff we plan for 2022.
We start with a regular update today, followed by an exciting piece of news at the end of the week and a big announcement next week, so stay tuned!
The new update version v1.2.3. contains a number of AI enhancements, improvements in the customized worlds and fixed issues, so let's go through the list:
Improvements built in cities from their own initiative (not ordered by the player) show turns left to completion in the city label on the map (similar like when a player initiates it).
Better explanation of the reasons why confederation, federation or absorption proposal was rejected by the AI.
Unit names can be now fully localized to any language. This localization works also for multiplayer when players use different languages in one game.
Trade issue when the list of offered resources was empty, was fixed.
Customized world issue when lack of wood at the beginning made the game unplayable, was fixed.
An issue in federations when slave numbers were negatively affected by signing a federation or absorption, was fixed.
An issue when the information about a temporary improvement (or disabled one) was lost when the unit was being upgraded, was fixed.
Trading exploit (an AI issue) was fixed.
Game options issue when a new General unit was created as part of rewards upon completing an objective despite the "Generals" feature being disabled for the game, was fixed.
An issue in PBEM (asynchronous multiplayer) when it was impossible to rejoin the game lobby after leaving the game, was fixed.
An incorrect tooltip of the yields around a capital city was fixed.
An issue in cycling through active units when a General with 1 action point left was automatically deselected, was fixed.
Language updates in all localizations.
One rare CTD was fixed.
Hopefully, these improvements will make the game even more fun and enjoyable. With this update done, we can concentrate fully on the big news that we will share next week. Have fun until then!

We're working with our very talented Lead Modeler to host this contest, in which any community member can draw up their own outfit idea for our plush pal. The winning outfit will be adapted into the game for everyone to use!
Entries are not solely based on quality, but rather your imagination. You don't even need to be an artist to take part! As long as your idea comes across and is original and imaginative, then your entry is valid! Additionally, we've included a printable reference sheet so that non-digital artists can draw and color their entry too.
