EVE Online - EVE Online
Capsuleers, welcome back to the Community Beat!

In our last publication we covered the kings of Alliance Tournament XVII, introduced the go-to place for lore in New Eden, took a peek at the fights in the Curse region, chatted with CCP Swift and CCP Aurora, and found a heart-warming story of Capsuleer love at EVE London.

The EVE community has been up to a lot since then. So as the Beat goes on, we look at some EVE traditions, check out some stunning artwork, celebrate a space-trucking milestone, and more!

Community Event – Luminaire Snowball Fight

Home to both Gallente Prime and Caldari Prime, the system of Luminaire has more history than most in New Eden. From infamous Caldari leader Tibus Heth liberating a planet, to Operation Highlander which saw players send the State Leviathan crashing down onto the planet’s surface. Despite all the fighting – and in classic EVE fashion – Luminaire also plays host to an epic snowball fight.

What is a snowball fight, you ask? Just a fun event where hundreds of players hurl in-game snowballs at one another. There are lightshows with prizes and even a secret Santa exchange! Thanks to Commander A9, this event has been going since the festival launcher was added to the game and we’ve come to expect it every December. Mark your calendars and stop by on 19 December @ 21:00 UTC to be part of EVE history.

We’ll see you there!

Community Corner – PushX

Precious few corporations and alliances in New Eden can survive for 10 years, but that’s exactly what PushX is celebrating this week! Since 2012, the members of PushX have been hauling goods around the universe for tens of thousands of different customers. They don’t care where you are, who you fly with, or what your standings are – all they care about is that you pay your bill! And boy have they hauled –PushX’s CEO Cassie Helio estimates that they have completed over 300,000 contracts and over 4,000,000 (MILLION) jumps!! Now that is a lot of space trucking.

Congratulations to PushX for keeping up with the delivery demands of New Eden for the past ten years. Here’s to the next ten o7.

Fleet Upside-down!

Another institution celebrating 10 years is Australia’s player meet: EVE Down Under! This year’s event was an all-digital affair, but that didn’t hamper the good times. Both CCP Convict and CCP Larrikin were in attendance and gave short presentations about life in the Australian timezone, with some fun stats sprinkled in. Following that was a player panel with prominent Australian players where they chatted about EVE and engaged with chat. And what would an EDU be without explosions? The staff hosted a 2v2 faction battleship tournament with plenty of hijinks suited for the Australian community. Congrats to ‘The Emu’s Won’ for, well, winning!

Huge shout-out to Sin Alarma and the EVE Down Under crew for putting on the event!

Partner Spotlight

Exploration, Abyssal Deadspace, escalations, seasonal events – no matter your PvE interests, Erstschlag has you covered! With his calm-yet-informative demeanor, Erstschlag’s broadcasts cover topics that new players can understand, and advanced players can learn from. Whenever a new challenge is in front of him, Erstschlag is quick to explore the new content, theorycraft solutions, and test & refine those strategies in front of a live audience. The content is great, but we’re always impressed with the level of thought that goes into his approach as well. Erstschlag streams daily and puts evergreen content on his YouTube channel, so hop on over if you want to learn more about PvE activities. With the Winter Nexus just around the corner, he’ll undoubtedly be breaking down all the fun content that the event will entail.

Art Corner

Agent Blackbear sent us this jaw-dropping acrylic painting that he had commissioned by a local artist to celebrate his love for EVE Online. This interpretation of a fleet in warp has us trying to spot all the different ships and looking at our own walls to see how we can improve them! Thanks for sharing, Agent Blackbear, it’s a fantastic piece.

EVE Tradition – The Cyno Vigil

Eyes forward, Capsuleer, the cyno is not yet lit.

Consider your modules, your rigs and ammo before you undock, for the cyno is not yet lit.

Break free of the station and witness the universe before you, for the cyno is not yet lit.

Set your ship to fly through the vastness while you wait, for the cyno is not yet lit.

Pay attention, Capsuleer, for those who have gone before you call for you to join them.

The cyno is now lit.

-Dranchela
EVE Online is nearly 20 years old, and over the years the community has created many in-game customs and traditions. One of the most somber is the ‘Cyno Vigil’ – a gathering of players lighting cynosural field generators in unison to celebrate the life of players who have passed away.

On 28 November, corpmates and friends of EVE player ‘Stepro’ gathered in the system of C0O6-K to honor their fallen companion who passed away on 7 November. Over 100 cynos were lit, respects were paid, and fun stories were shared. The tradition of the Cyno Vigil is a beautiful reminder of the strength of friendships forged in New Eden.

That's all for this installment. Head on over to the EVE Online forums to chat and share your stories, or check out EVE Pulse for a different look at what’s going on in EVE!

Programming
The programming team has also been hard at work to create the infrastructure for server owners to easier manage and create servers, as well as working on better multiplayer functionality to allow for the viewing of stats and map selection. These changes include:
  • A custom console that makes it easier for us to create client-side and server-side console commands for managing the server, and makes it easier for admins and users to execute these commands securely (right now, users who try to execute admin commands will be kicked by default but that will be configurable).
  • Help commands with detailed explanations
  • VAC, game ban, and SCP: Pandemic ban detection (currently for official servers only) as well as local bans
  • Expanded configs for customizing game and server experience, including match timers, ban settings,
  • Server-synched start and end game cards that can be changed per gamemode, allowing for map selection, stats, etc.
  • A concept for the workbench system has been built, we plan on placing these throughout the map to deck the fuck out of your gun.

AI
In the realm of AI, the virtual light system is being updated to allow for real-time updates of characters’ lighting data while they are currently being detected by an AI agent. This means that even if you are initially in shadow when seen by a zombie, moving out of that shadow will cause them to see you faster.

Art
The art department has been continuing its progress of creating final game assets to replace placeholders from early development and has now begun the process of replacing the blockout of the reactor room.

This accompanies the continued work on character uniforms, improved gore and improved reflections. The model for the 1911 is also finished, filling the role of a lower capacity, higher power handgun for your operator.

Audio
This month, the audio department has made some massive leaps in terms of progression since our last dev blog.

With the addition of over 50 new sounds this month, we have also reworked our entire audio system to further reflect the environment around the players. Gun audio has been remastered to represent their Native sound while retaining the clarity and power expected from a modern FPS. We have also finished our beta recordings for the Infector-Fledgling, with the final mixes being implemented this month, our first Fledglings soundbase is nearing completion.

This is a key system for the players, as most of the anomalies in SCP: Pandemic have “Active States'' that they reside in based on the environment around them.

With the introduction of our subsonic/supersonic occlusion system in an earlier build, our audio team has been hard at work updating and refining the process, to add more depth in firefights. With this system in mind, we are also tweaking occlusion further by separating the layers of Weapons and sounds as a whole to represent the distance and density of materials between.

Our last addition for this month's sound updates is our new gore mechanics. The fledglings now have dedicated dismemberment, and bullet impact sounds to drive home the gorey nature of SCP Pandemic. This system will also be heavily updated to fit new anomalies, weapons, and dismemberment added in future builds.

Conclusion
This wraps up this month’s dev blog, and with it the final dev blog for 2021. We will be back with our next addition in 2022 as we continue with feedback on the Beta over the holidays. We cannot possibly summarize how thankful we are for all the support we’ve gotten over the last year of development. None of this would be possible without a community like you.

The Closed Beta trailer should also be release fairly soon after this blog!

Happy Holidays and Ad Astra,
Affray Interactive.
