Iām Yakov Butuzov and Iād like to present to you the game Iām working on ā Loretta. Itās a psychological thriller that makes the player an accessory to the heroineās crimes and leads her through a self-crafted nightmare.
And thereās a new demo available on Steam!
You could have already read my posts about the plot and the main inspirations for the game, so now itās time to update you on the progress I made. Iām mostly making Loretta alone, so trying to understand the expectations of the audience is quite difficult, as well as corresponding to them. But Iād like to know what people want to get from the game like this and, hopefully, make it happen.
Loretta is a story-driven adventure game. Its gameplay focuses on choosing dialogue options, interacting with objects, and making decisions: planning the murder(s) and getting rid of the evidence.
There are several endings, too. You shouldnāt expect tremendous variability in such a game, but the most important thing for me is to give the player the possibility to either lead events into a thin web of dodgy lies or a series of murders that will push the heroine into the abyss of madness.
Itās the year 1947. Loretta and Walter Harris are moving to a farm. Into his parentās house. Walter is a writer, Lora is a housewife. Both are quite unsuccessful. Moreover, Walterās cheating.
Loretta starts to understand that she gave up her dreams, her job and her life for a failure of a husband she doesnāt even love. She finds herself in an empty cold house without a livelihood. And as she struggles to make loan payments, she finds out that Walterās publishing house has insured his life. In case of his death or disappearance, the bank will pay out 30.000$. A plan is born in Loraās mind. So let me confess, I am in love with this era. Everything about it makes me love it passionately: the car design, interiors, clothes, "streamline" elements, culture, music (Bing Crosby, Al Jolson, Al Bowlly, The Ink Spots, Vera Lynn and others.)
However, Loretta is not a documentary. The name of the state in which the action takes place is not mentioned by design. It is a metaphysical place, refracted through the prism of Loretta's fading consciousness. You will be travelling through the hub of Loretta's memories, and youāll have to solve a puzzle or a mini-game to unlock new parts of the story. In the development, the main challenge for me is creating an unusual heroine. Loretta does horrible things during the game, and you can influence the severity of them. Each decision you make will have consequences.
Sooner or later in life, every person faces betrayal, poverty, and other challenges of fate. Everyone tries to settle them in their own way, but what if one goes all-in? Loretta dears to try. Itās a story of a person fighting with their desires. Itās about frustration, lies, betrayal, relationships between man and woman, creativity, crimes, mysteries and even⦠love. Iām not going to lie, the game turns out quite unusual. It has a distinctive style. II myself am slowly falling in love with the heroine, although she behaves like a damn brute. In the entire game, Loretta can kill fewer people than the main character of any shooter on the first level only. And my task here is to make the story feel exciting and interesting.
I invite you to play a free demo of Loretta on Steam and write a review. I read everything and will highly appreciate it as it will help me make the game better! Thank you!
We had a very difficult release so far but we have been bless with a wonderful Early Access community that helped us going through the challenges.
We have fixed a lot of majors issues on the system but a more sinister treat seem to block the maximum number of player we can handle.
The team will need time to implement fixes so we decided to scale the game with a new game server.
We hoped to do the Early Access with just one server, but it won't be the case. Having many servers will allow more players to test the game right now and will minimize lags and crashes.
In the 2.0 update I reworked the boss battles so they are more integrated with the story that surrounds the battle.
I also established a loose story-based connection with my two freeware games "The Heart's Fallacy" and "Blessed Relic Chronis", although each game can be enjoyed separately. There is also a side story that is roughly 2 hours long, and I fixed some more bugs within the game.
This side story takes place 1 year before the events of Path of the Martyrs. Machia is going to Trito Town to do her first political interview. However, one day, monsters appear out of nowhere and threaten the livelihood of the people of Trito Town. Can Machia and Saiyato uncover why this town is being targeted?

Things have been hopping over here like a frog in a hot skillet!! Never a dull moment in my life and the past few weeks have been no exception! I always love when I have GOOD news to share, so we might as well have a progress update while we're at it :)
**Chapter 3 new release date!!**
In the whirlwind of getting Chapter 3 polished and refined, something important was brought to my attention. The original release date of October 30th means Chapter 3 will be released on a Saturday. Nothing terribly wrong with that, but to give more flexibility to the people streaming the game (and maximizing our weekends), I have decided to push the date forward and release Chapter 3 on October 29th instead.
At 12am CST, on what is essentially "Thursday night", I'll push out the final update that unlocks Chapter 3 and makes it playable on Steam. I don't know how often this sort of thing happens for others, but I'm excited and hope everyone enjoys it nonetheless!!
**Chapter 3 Progress**
I don't want to jinx myself by speaking too soon, but so far things are on-schedule. My usual process is to get my "firm draft" done, do some troubleshooting playthroughs, tweak the finer details like random encounters/new items/Exp, and then do a final once-over to polish and refine things to my (at the time) satisfaction. For now I'm doing the playthroughs, but will soon rope in a few of my alpha testers to get their thoughts on the final product. Through lots of coffee and a few nights of 4 hours' sleep, we should be on track!
**Chapter 1 and 2 Text Reformats**
As I've stated on many occasions, reformatting 16 hours of content will take a lot of time. As of right now I have completed all of the "cinematics" and progression-dependent dialogue to be in proper widescreen format now. I have not put a dent in the side convos, but that will be my focus after the release of Chapter 3 (along with mapping for Chapter 4). I think everyone will find it makes reading much easier on the eyes to have extra space. I've erred on the side of condensing dialogue as opposed to expanding it, wanting to take advantage of the flexibility more text area gives me. Some dialogue may be different, but overall I feel this is a worthwhile change.
And there we have it! I look forward to everyone's thoughts on the Chapter 3 release and hope it is enjoyable. I hope everyone is looking forward to the next chapter in Deirdre's journey!!
