School director said that in two weeks the second floor of the school will be open, but not safe👊🏻

With Black Book’s release drawing ever so near, the demonic manuscript ruffles, revealing more intricate and ancient designs, pages upon pages of curses and blessings...words of power.

Let’s take a deeper look at the combat system in Black Book — the way Vasilisa combines zagovors (or spells) together to protect herself from harm, and deal harm in return against her demonic enemies.

The Black Book

The Black Book is your main instrument in battle. It is a powerful artifact that lets you manage your own deck of spells and combine them together for additional effects. The book has several seals, each one unlocked after a certain stage of the game is reached, thus letting you use progressively more powerful spells.


Your starting deck, which will grow much larger over time.

As your mastery of the dark arts grows, you will be able to use more cards during your turn and compound their effects better. During your travels, you will be able to get new spells by winning or buying them.

The combat itself is arranged in turns; in most cases, Vasilisa takes the first turn by using different spells, or pages, of the Black Book, and then her enemies make their move, each casting their own spell or ability.

Offense

The night is dark but your words are darker, just like the Black pages you recite to inflict damage. Offensive spells come in many flavors, with a whole variety of unique effects. Even the toughest enemies that strike despair into the heart of seasoned witches will fall...if you play your cards right. Twist, churn, bend, and set enemies ablaze — they will regret daring to cross your path.



Out of many unique effects you can utilize in battle, a few deserve some spotlight:

  • Vampirism
  • Damage-over-time
  • Curses that prevent positive effects
  • Damage to all enemies
  • Berserk spells

Black pages often synergize together to form truly fearsome zagovors. Take caution, however, some spells are so terrible and vile, casting them leaves a mark on your soul, pushing you closer to the abyss...

Defense

Fiercer than any beast, your enemies are born of Hell and seek to inflict misery, pain, and death. Without protection, you won’t last long in a battle against even a weak demon, much less so against more powerful beings. To protect yourself, the Black Book has White pages — blessings, wards, and words of light — all of which you can use to shield yourself from harm.



Again, the effects are many and I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun; here’s a little of what you can expect to buff yourself with during battles:

  • Damage absorption
  • Effect boosters
  • Card swapping
  • Temporary invincibility
  • Status effect reversal

You will have to seek a balance between offense and defense, point out the weak spots in your enemy’s behavior, and time your cards right.

Consumables

The magic of the world is not within one’s soul only — it is within every living being. The earth provides, and you should take — herbs, roots, leaves, and flowers, each with its own magical effect you often wouldn’t find elsewhere.

Consumable items often provide a crucial edge in tough fights, and maybe the only thing standing between you and certain death. Stock up at the herbalist, or seek these items on your own during your many travels around Cherdyn.

Artifacts

If herbs siphon magic from the ground, various artifacts have concentrated it from humans and spirits alike, becoming ever so potent in their magical capacity. Upon your travels, you will come across many trinkets, charms, and items of magical power that will prove to be extremely useful in and outside combat.

Keep a watchful eye for the items of value, and don’t forget that any time you happen to visit a fair, there is a merchant with the most curious goods near one of the stands.

Summary:
An update to many gameplay systems, mostly Gunplay related stuff, but also some door anti-spam. ADS and Brace timings for all guns have been adjusted slightly. Doors now cannot be spammed open and closed. Some fixes to some gunplay related bugs and a few other things.

We have been tweaking the Gunplay after 3.0 released and are still working on improving aspects of the Gunplay to get the feeling of the core system to it's intended place. Expect more in the future, in the form of improvements as well as fixes on some issues we are still tracking down.

Added door anti-spam:
  • Doors have a .65s cooldown when an interaction occurs with a door (about how long it takes for a door to close or open)
  • Open, close, and shotgun interactions all generate the cooldown
  • Exception: If the last interact was a DEFENDER and and ENFORCER tries to OPEN the door, it will bypass the cooldown for the ENFORCER only
  • This allows the ENFORCER to counter a DEFENDER door close tactic and pursue a DEFENDER before the door closes or locks
New reload scheme keybind TACTICAL RELOAD (HOLD):
  • Separate keybind from the RELOAD, EMERGENCY RELOAD, and TACTICAL RELOAD keybinds in the Input Mapper
  • Tap R for emergency reload, hold R for tactical reload
  • Intended as a replacement for people looking to reverse the tactical/emergency reload scheme
ADS and Brace delay tweaks:
  • Fixed longstanding issue where guns would erroneously gain full weapon accuracy during brace animation before laser was engaged
  • The above is expected to primarily have a gameplay effect on the shotguns and SABR back-up ironsight, but affects all guns
  • Timings for most guns have been adjusted for the following gun animations:
  • - Hip to Brace
  • - Hip to ADS
  • - Brace to ADS
  • ADS timings increased marginally, with a 0.025 to 0.050s increase on most guns
  • ADS timings for pistols reduced from 0.200s to 0.150s
  • Brace timings on non-pistols increased from 0.100s to either 0.150s or 0.200s for most guns, except the SABR which was increased to 0.225s
  • Transitioning from brace to ADS on most guns now takes the full ADS time for accuracy to kick in
Fixed some more lingering issues with Gunplay 3.0:
  • Fixed delay with kick interaction event
  • Kick will stop momentum if player attempts to jump away; they will not be able to leave the interaction zone
  • Shotgun bug fixed - ghost firing event could occur if shotgun is fired immediately after breach loading
  • Shotgun bug fixed - rack bug could occur if reloading immediately after firing out of a full magazine
Other:
  • Round GUI: Added new visuals for spectating players in the round status and removed the eye icon.
  • Fixed an exception caused by map icon renderer noted in player logs
Known bugs still lingering from Gunplay 3.0:
  • Shotgun bug - Rack bug occurring if firing near end of shotgun unholster animation (fix in progress)
  • Shotgun bug - Floating shotgun shell bug occurring if firing shotgun near middle of unholstering animation (fix in progress)
  • Firing bug - Clients sometimes do not properly synchronize firing events with the server, seems to happen most often with stolen equipment after a round change (under investigation)

Soulash is now in over 8.5k wishlists on Steam and it keeps growing every day. The demo has been played by over 6000 players. Because of your incredible support, we're continuing to push on with our roadmap despite the failed Kickstarter - it's all thanks to all of you!

I've seen some of you were worried about the future of Soulash and I wanted to assure you we're still on schedule. There are still 3 big updates we target for this year - gods, endgame, and full graphics mod. When we have all of them ready, we'll decide how we would like to approach Steam release plans as we get closer to the end of the year. We're considering going early access for a couple of months or run a closed beta to polish and add quality of life updates before the 1.0 release. If you would like to follow along with the development more closely, discord is probably the best place, as it's pretty active and you can find me lurking there often.

In July, we had to hide many things from the community because we really want to avoid spoilers for the upcoming update. To see all the surprised reactions with each update is one of the best moments of game development, so we wouldn't want to ruin that! However, here is a small overview of what happened in July!




In July, we made a hat design contest on our discord! 52 players suggested their very creative design for the past two weeks. It was super nice for the dev team to see all the suggestions and debates about it!

The winning suggestion of the Hat Design Competition is... the TV based on the Gazing Grove area made by Amari! This design will be implemented into the game in the next big update!

July has been a busy, busy month. Between releasing our newest beta which drastically overhauls how relics are selected, to all the new stuff we have been working on for the upcoming [NAME PENDING] Update. :P
Some of those things we have already been teasing on our social medias!

One of the big new features coming to the next Update are the Daily and Weekly Challenges and a whole bunch of stuff surrounding them that I don't want to talk about... yet. But if you have been following our social medias you might have already figured out some of the hidden details



We have also teased that we are trying to add more room variation into the mix by adding very small rooms among other new room generation types, so get scared. :P



With that all out of the way, I hope you are looking forward to whats coming soon. As we get closer and closer to the release of the next update, we'll be teasing more and more new stuff on our social media, so don't forget to follow us there if you wanna stay up to date on whats coming to the game!

Working on Revita is always a ton of fun. For those of you process junkies out there, Ben and I spend most of every Tuesday brainstorming and breaking story, and then I spend the rest of the week developing material.

That material covers everything from actual in-game dialogue to the underpinning story beats that drive the Child on their journey through Revita. Often, we focus on the specifics of how we want to roll them out to you and the delivery method. Is it an NPC or a Journal entry? Who knows? Sometimes we decide to throw something into the background and hope you all see it…

I could tell you more, but the community team has instructed me to avoid spoilers at all costs.



Hey friends!
This month, I composed quite a few new tracks for Revita, some of which were actually pretty challenging to make. For spoiler reasons I obviously can't go into detail, but let me give you some information at least, what has been going on:

One of the new songs has a live-recorded acoustic guitar in it, something I have been wanting to record and include in a tune for quite a while now! Another track has a bunch of electric guitar tracks in it and oh boy, I can't wait for you all to hear that one once the next update goes live! But perhaps the hardest challenge this month was taking a fairly old Revita tune that both you and I have listened to dozens of times by now, and completely rearranging it into a new song. I have never really done such a thing before but I hope it turned out pretty good and, once you hear it, you will go „Hey, that sounds familiar!“.

You will be able to hear the new songs, once the update drops, both in-game and as the first extension of the original soundtrack, which will extend from 26 songs to at least 30. Thank you all so much for your huge interest not only in the game itself but also the original soundtrack. This motivates me to put even more effort into future songs! =D
