Terminal Conflict - GFK
You may have noticed a unique style in the last development diary. Maybe you have even seen some new brilliant tweets. Indeed, a new person has joined our PR and community engagement team. Meet our new veteran strategist, Seth!

Some of you may know me through my other project: The Strategy Informer, where I review and promote the discovery of strategy and strategy adjacent games. As an indie game industry veteran, I plan to work with the engagement and reach of Terminal Conflict.

Games are my passion. I remember being a 12-year-old boy, and my first board-game, Napoleon at Waterloo. Later I got to experience my first strategy computer game, Gary Grigsby’s Guadalcanal, on the Apple II. Who knew the impact it would have on my life? The early RPG Ultima was another major influence when I found the opportunity to work for Origin Systems / Electronic Arts on Ultima Online. Over the years, I have worked on board games, AAA titles, indie games, some through my own game company and I can’t wait to get started.

Look me up and send me a message as I got the keys to the Terminal Twitter account. Likewise, I plan to increase engagement in other areas, like the game steam forums. Keep a lookout for upcoming development diaries and the continued development of Terminal Conflict. Also, if anyone is interested in streaming or YouTube, I would be happy to tweet about it and get the word out.

Discord or the Strategy Mill Twitter account are the best way to reach me, so ask me pretty much anything. For those that prefer, the Steam forum is another place to get in touch with me. To get updated, if you have not yet followed the Strategy Mill Twitter, this is a great time to do so!

So until the next diary where I dive into the game, this is Seth signing off with a Ronald Reagan quote...

“Here's my strategy on the Cold War: We win, they lose.”

Terraformers - Geaxle
Fellow gamers,

Here where we are on Earth, the summer has been mostly rainy, which is a bit strange, but it’s a good opportunity to just develop and play games. At least I don’t get this annoying ball of light shining on my screen. And speaking of gaming, as you might be aware, Gamescom will take place at the end of August. We will have an updated version of the demo playable at the indie arena booth. There will be tons of other games worth checking out as well.

Workshop week
This month we had our annual workshop week where we gathered all the team in a house in the French Alps. This is a good opportunity for us to take a step back and look at the bigger picture of what we are doing. In addition, we take the opportunity to prototype some new ideas and do short burst development on features we didn’t have the time to do before. And of course, it is also a refreshing and bonding moment for the team with board games and outdoor hikes.

We played a lot of the “Evolution: Climate” board game which if you haven’t tried already we warmly recommend. The way your animals have to adapt to a changing climate and interact together was very fun and a good source of inspiration for us.

A good session of Evolution:Climate

City buildings
During the week, one of the workshops we did was on improving building visuals. We want the lighting to be adapted to the different city locations as they should look good in a dark lavatube as well as in a bright crater.

Our devs and designers did wonders on this, prototyping a process to quickly create and adapt buildings to a variety of lighting conditions and perspective angles.

After setting up a process, our artist started exploring more unique buildings so that their purpose can be guessed from their visuals and they can be uniquely recognizable. Here is a sneak peek of what is to come.

New drafts for industry related buildings

Forest visuals
Another aspect we worked on during this week has been general planet visuals change due to terraforming and in particular forests! Forests are quite important as they participate in the fantasy of terraforming mars on the same level as oceans and clouds.

So we worked on all of that. The forest coverage is controlled by the presence of tree lifeforms in the region, combined with some amount of noise of different frequencies to make the limits look natural. The color is influenced by altitude, as well as noise and a normal map simulates the lighting and “bumpiness” of the forest surface.

Oceans are a bit easier to do, but will have interesting coastlines where you can still see some low depth geographic elements on the coastlines. And they will of course be frozen in very cold regions. And finally clouds. These are driven by how much rain is in a region.

Forests, clouds, oceans and a blue atmosphere over Mars

Next month we will show the progress on the buildings and their implementation. Until then we hope to see you on the virtual gamescom booth to try the demo and beat the high score.

Cowboy Life Simulator - Andzi Proxy

We've made significant progress improving nearly all of the game mechanics, including more excellent animations in resource gathering and weapons that will have much better animations now. We will be closely getting to the stage of releasing a prologue that will show the game in much more depth than before, showing the beginning of the main storyline and parts of other levels in the world and sandbox in the ranch level.

Of course, we won't forget to add a working save system so that you can enjoy exploring and building your ranch in a more pleasing way.

Ylands - nikki.severin
Hey there, Ylanders!

We hope that you had a great July and as we enter August, we come bearing good news!

When we were going through the feedback you have shared with us for the 1.8 polish update, we couldn't overlook one issue that many of you have with picking up items. It can get tedious after a while when trying to collect all that bamboo for a sweet new blueprint you just placed, right? We get you. More importantly, we hear you! Let us tell you all about what's happening at the Ylands HQ right now:

In order to save your mouse buttons and also your fingers, we started working on a mass pick up function. That's right, the community asked and here we are, working on this massively requested feature.

Before we're able to tell you about how exactly the mass pick up function works, we have to go through a design process that ensures that the best possible solution is developed and implemented. Which is why we need prototypes. Currently there are several prototypes being discussed, developed and tested and while they're all looking super promising, only one will be the one. So keep your eyes peeled, because more on this topic will be coming soon and we will want your input!

The mass pick up feature, of course, isn't the only thing we're working on. We have been getting some amazing feedback regarding Mystery Ylands and we're happy to report that more are on their way, as well as something new and exciting that will make Mystery Ylands even more interesting! Because you see, when you're on a Mystery Yland and you... oh, that's right, we can't tell you just yet! But it will add another marvelous layer to solving mysteries and make them even more appealing.

We hope you are having fun exploring the Mystery Ylands and we will report with another dose of dev news in a week's time!

Stay classy, Ylanders!

This season’s novelties

Contract System

There is a new contract system, which is completely different from the previously existing mechanics. The updated contracts work very simply:

  • in the main menu and the lobby, the player goes to the "Contracts" section (available on the top panel);
  • a special menu allows you to see all the available contracts and information about them (execution conditions, activation costs, progress status and reward upon completion);
  • some contracts can have a certain fee (for example, WF$), but the reward for their completion is higher;
  • there are two types of contracts: a one-time set of tasks or a sequential chain of them;
  • a player may have an unlimited number of active contracts at the same time.
  • some contracts have time constraints; offers like those may disappear at any time.

This new contract system will help to diversify the gameplay and will give players an opportunity to receive even more game incentives: soldiers will be able to set certain goals and get bonuses (for example, weapons, equipment or consumables).

Kalashnikov MP-155 Ultima

We are glad to present you a new powerful shotgun manufactured by the Kalashnikov concern. It boasts a high range and medium rate of fire, which are offset by significant recoil. In terms of specs, the model will resemble the Chiappa Triple Threat, but with a lower rate of fire and the possibility to perform more shots without reloading.

The weapon is not yet available, the model will be fine-tuned in next patches.

Steyr Scout Special

The arsenal of Snipers has been replenished with a special version of the legendary bolt-action rifle. The looks of this model have been redesigned, and additional attachments can be mounted on the arm. The special version differs from the regular one thanks to its range of fire, which is compensated for by slight differences in accuracy and rate of fire. The novelty comes equipped with unique attachments: a silencer and a bipod (folded and unfolded).

The specs of the rifle are indicated taking into account the installed attachment - a unique silencer. We will tell you more about the ways of distributing the arms in future publications. Stay tuned!

Seasonal Content

"Ruins" map ("Capture")

The new map for the "Capture" mode will greet you with a tropical climate and the possibility to use a variety of strategies. The confrontation between Blackwood and Warface will unfold in hot Africa among the rubble of the ancient ruins, which have prepared some treacherous surprises for those who dare explore them.

The goal of the attacking team is to capture the box with the decryption code. The task of the defending team is to prevent the secret data from being stolen, no matter what.

The jungle and the stone tunnels are full of dangerous zones that can be used to obtain tactical advantages and restrict the enemy’s maneuvers. Lure the enemies into ancient traps, by changing the location’s topology during the game with levers and switches. Well-thought-out tactics will help you win and obtain the coveted achievements!

"Hidden War" series

The appearance of the new series will satisfy even the most discerning gun connoisseurs. They have a stylish design, great variability of patterns, as well their key feature, unique eye-catching elements inherent in every model that will certainly not leave you indifferent. Some guns have exclusive external elements that enhance the usual models and give them a fresh coat of paint. Check out how cool they are!

"Pyrite" series

The frames of the models from the new series are decorated with a gold pattern using geometric motifs. It resembles a scratch card for travelers that you need to scratch out if you’ve visited certain places in the world. You also have a difficult journey ahead, so grab the new guns to learn about the new game content with them!

"Hidden War" gear

A new special set of "Hidden War" gear has appeared in the seasonal update. The pack includes a helmet and a vest for all classes (except for SEDs). The specs of the new set are the same for each class. The "Hidden War" gear will allow you to diversify equipment to fit different needs of your fighter, combining new elements with the already existing ones.

We plan to add these items as a reward in the new contract system. In addition, the "Hidden War" gear is prohibited in Ranked Matches. Your opinion on these matters is very important to us: is it necessary to lift the ban? What do you think about the gear specs? Tell us about your impressions and opinions in the discussion of the article!

Bats

Have you been waiting to give your opponent a proper beating, but doing that with a toy hammer was a bit too difficult? No problem! Now we have some serious novelty 一 the bat. You don’t have to shy away from the appearance of the weapon. Just equip the bat and demonstrate the most serious intentions in a fight! The weapon is available in several variants, which differ from each other substantially. In addition, we have prepared some camouflages for the new arm.

The "Viridian" series

Just one look at this novelty, will probably remind you of a couple of popular films about the not so friendly guests from other planets and dimensions. The frame of the models from the new series is styled in dark colours using contrasting green inserts. They shine beautifully, as if filling the weapon with unearthly power. Give in to the temptation — bring these guns into your next battle!

"Valkyrie", "Santa Muerte" and S.T.A.B. Packs

We present new sets that include thematic content: a special character skin, a weapon series and camouflages, charms, achievements, as well as special contracts that will be available in the future. These packs are a continuation of "Sandstone" and repeat its overall concept: you will learn the story of the characters and their personas, and you will also be able to try out a special set of items.

We will reveal the details in future news articles.

New charms and achievements

As per tradition, we have prepared a huge set of achievements, as well as a collection of thematic charms for the new season. Customize your guns, earn unique badges, install them in your profile and stand out among your opponents!

You can get everything listed above in a variety of seasonal activities 一 from the Battle Pass to special events, promotions and contests.

Battle Pass

We present the "Hidden War" Battle Pass with new rewards. Familiar mechanics are awaiting you: the opportunity to get up to 100% of progress by completing simple daily tasks, free access and special weekly missions for those who want to give it their all.

After fully completing the Battle Pass, you will receive permanent weapon models from the "Pyrite" and the "Hidden War" series, a lot of crafting cards (including free ones), with which you can create even more guns in the crafting system, camouflages, thematic achievements and charms, boosters as well as consumables for combat.

Paper Pirates - IterationGames
New Trait: The Meddler
Our first new trait for The Meddlesome Update is The Meddler!

On days when The Meddler does not play in, they may choose a pirate that is playing in and change whatever they’ve chosen to play in today to either an obey or a disobey. Like other active traits, their power is limited and The Meddler can only meddle a maximum of three times each voyage.

When a meddle takes place, the pirate whose job was meddled will receive a private prompt on their device to let them know that they’ve been meddled (and whether their choice is being forced to obey or disobey), and just before the job cards are revealed on the main screen you will see an indication that a meddle took place today.

Whether your Meddler is a ghost trying to meticulously frame a human pirate, or a human pirate thwarting the plans of your ghosts, The Meddler is sure to add an extra layer to all your social deducting.

New Trait: The Sensitive
Our second new trait for The Meddlesome Update is The Sensitive!

The Sensitive is able to tell, by checking their black spot, whether they are currently next to a ghost on the ship. That means if the pirate one rank up, or down, from them is a ghost - or even if both are! - The Sensitive will know that they’re near some spooky business.

The Sensitive adds a whole new perspective to events which change pirate’s rank and positions on the ship. Watch out when the captain promotes you - they might be bringing you into the suspicion of The Sensitive!

New Feature: The Ship Shop
Nat O’Bother has opened up his Ship Shop - a new expansion to the Shop Ship! Bobbing in his barrel, but always ready to go, nothing is too much bother for our Nat!

The Ship Shop’s specialism is helping you to customise your ship - as displayed on the title screen and sailing while you’re on a voyage. Everyone gets a free ship slot by default, so you can visit Nat and start building right away!

Nat sells a wide range of ship parts for PP Coins, from figureheads to flags, from sails to sterns, and you can combine them to build the ship of your dreams. To top things off, he’s also here to help you give each ship a name and icon.

If you’re feeling flush and customisation’s your thing, Nat can also sell you additional ship slots which let you own more than one ship - saving custom ship configurations to switch between quickly. The more ships you own, the more they cost, so having a navy of seaworthy ships might take more adventurin’ than you expect!

New Event: Ominous Winds
With The Meddlesome Update, we’re also introducing one new event - Ominous Winds! When Ominous Winds blow, a pirate is sure to see an omen of the future. What will this omen do? Will it threaten to throw a pirate overboard? Offer them a promotion to captain? Or something else entirely?

All omens are tracked as ongoing events (so you can see the details at the side of the screen!) and grant a sense of impending fortune or doom to a particular pirate. Will your omen play out, or will it expire before it has a chance to take effect?

UI Improvements
We’ve made some improvements to the Paper Pirates UI to increase readability, and to help add understanding to the way the game is played. The following three key features are designed with new players in mind in particular:

The Phase Tracker
In the top left of the game screen, you’ll now see the phase tracker. The phase tracker indicates which stage (playing in, event or voting) of the current day you’re at, and which one is coming up next.

Device Action Reminders
We’ve made it more clear when someone needs to take an action on their device, with a clearer indicator above a pirate. These trigger when a pirate needs to make a choice in an event or vote a pirate overboard for example.

‘Who Voted?’ Indicators
In addition to the existing ‘Who voted for who’ tracker on each player’s device, we’ve added a visual indicator of who cast votes for who during voting in the form of coloured black spots.

‘Can Create a Ghost’ Indicator
When an event has an action or decision that might create a ghost, the event message box will give you a little warning to let you know. Look out for this as a helpful reminder when weighing up whether it’s worthwhile to poison that soup or not!

We’ve also given the Credits page a bit of a facelift - check it out to see the pirates on the Iteration Games crew!
