I'm a sucker for an Olympics opening ceremony. I love the spectacle of it, with all the singing and dancing and references to historical things. Whenever the athletes march out, I often turn over the TV for a bit, though. It's nice to see them happy and waving, but it's usually a long one>.
But not this year! Since this Olympics are taking place in Tokyo, Japan's decided to spruce up the atmosphere with an ambience game-likers will appreciate. Yes, each country's athletes are entering the stadium to orchestral versions of music from classic Japanese video games.
They'll be there for you, when the rain starts to fall. They'll be there for you, like you've been there before. They'll be there for you, because they're programmed to be. They're your virtual friends, not your real ones.
Warcraft 3: Reforged was a highly anticipated remake of Blizzard’s classic RTS. Fans were promised upgraded graphics, and new voice-overs and cut-scenes that would align the game with World of Warcraft's more extensive lore. A modern version that kept their classic game so close to its heart that previous mods would work with it. What was released missed so many of those promised additions, and even cut some of the title’s original elements, that Blizzard were compelled to offer up refunds.
According to a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, “Mismanagement and financial pressures” were the reasons behind the botched remake. Tension between Blizzard’s vision and Activision’s backing left the project neither a remaster nor a remake, and the results were embarrassing.
Dead Space was announced tonight during EA Play, but its brief teaser trailer offered very little information. Instead, the developers revealed more in an interview with IGN.
The gist: it's early days, but they're looking to be faithful to the original game - and no, it won't have microtransactions.
It would be too much to call Evertried an Into The Breach-like, but it does seem to contain my favourite feature from that modern turn-based classic. It's that enemies move after you do, but telegraph their attacks first.
So I'll dodge those attacks, set traps for those enemies, and climb Evertried's isometric tower, when the game releases this autumn. For now, there's a trailer below that shows it in action.
If I'd have seen the new Grid Legends trailer a month ago, I guarantee there would've been zero emotional response. My brain would've been as silent as an electric car passing through a field of tumbleweed. But now look at me! Ever since I watched people play rally games beautifully, I've had this car game renaissance. Yep, against all odds, I'm interested in it.
A lot of games claim to be Tim Burton-y, but Lost In Random might reasonably be called Henry Selick-y. It's an action RPG inspired by dark fairy tales and stop-motion animated films, and brings to mind Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. And, in a way, American McGee's Alice.
Its September 10th release date was announced tonight at EA Play, and a new trailer is below.
It's a good day for deals on RPS-recommended products, as the Crucial X8 1TB portable SSD - our favourite external drive - has dropped from £120 just a few weeks ago to a near-historic low price of £95 at Amazon UK. That's a solid deal for a tough, fast drive capable of read speeds of around 1000MB/s over USB-C.
Our best ultrawide monitor pick, the Predator Z35P, is nearly half-off today. It's now just £480 at Ebuyer, down from £774, a fantastically low price for a 35-inch monitor of real quality, with a 3440x1440 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and full-fat G-Sync.
One of the standouts from tonight's EA Play wasn't only WWE superstar Xavier Woods exuding astonishingly positive vibes, but those gameplay snippets of Lost In Random. It looks a bit good, doesn't it? I mean, the world looks gorgeous and the story seems cool and then there's Dicey. He's a sentient dice with spindly arms and legs who'll accompany you on your journey into the world of Random.
After careful analysis, I have concluded that Dicey is a good lad. This is because he strongly resembles the Pot Boys from Elden Ring. In fact, I'd say he's likely a relative. They share the same energy, after all. And I'm here for it.
