Welcome to the next Animal Shelter Simulator devlog.

We've been hard at work on the next stages of the production and there will be some cool upcoming events - more about that next time - so this time we are coming back to you in a slightly different devlog format.

So here are the biggest changes made in the last few weeks:

Context popups



Taking care of animals is not an easy task - the same is true of finding your footing in a new game. It's a tough nut to crack, but don't worry! That's why we have created the popup help system.

Every time you will interact with a new and important object in the game you will be greeted with a panel containing helpful information and images.

They will guide you though all the game's mechanics as well as teach you how to properly care for the pets in your shelter.



Missions



In addition to the popups you will be able to complete missions: those will guide you throughout your journey and provide goals to strive towards.

You can also hide them if you'd like to play in a more free-form way.



Last but not least: playing with cats!



We all know how mischievous, majestic and independent cats can be. That's why we've added a lasers so the cats can burn all of that excess energy they have.

The laser is a fun item to play with our cute little creatures, who are sure to love the pursuit of the red dot.

The Heroic Legend of Eagarlnia - IGnis
Hi all!

As you might already know, the continent of Eagarlnia cosists of multiple races and each of them has their own story. Hopefully you will enjoy the following background information!

Humans (Child: 0-12, Adolescent: 13-17, Adult: 18-55, Elder: 56-120)

Among all the Eagarlnian races, humans are the most short-lived people possessing an average lifespan of roughly 40 years, with the highest life expectancy being 112 years. Unlike the elves and dwarves, they have the agency to follow either the will of Cornett or Asnett, resulting in them having variable characteristics and great ingenuity. Naturally, this makes mankind Eagarlnia's most "unstable" race.


Elvenkind (Child: 0-500, Adolescent: 501-800, Adult: 801-???)

Elves boast the longest lifespans, and no records exist of one ever growing "old" in the physical world. However, their growth is significantly slower than the other races; it takes 500 years for an elven child to reach biological adolescence, and another 300 for adulthood. Upon reaching adulthood however, their physical appearance does not appear to undergo any change regardless of how much time passes, resulting in them maintaining eternal youth. As elvenkind can only follow the will of Cornett, they are gifted with the ability to connect with all living things around them. Their seemingly endless lifespans also gives them an unusually serene disposition. In a way, they serve as the world's dedicated historians and archivists as they pursue and study knowledge of all forms.

The Lanleri: An ancient people known for their shining emerald hair and eyes who reside within the southern region of the Echo Forest. These elves hold a deep connection with nature and live in relative isolation from the rest of the world. They are agile and brave, and their skills in archery could be regarded as the best in the continent of Eagarlnia.

The Irici: An elven race that resides on the western region of the Lasred Plateau, east of the Pillars of the Behemoth from the Divine Mountains. Unlike their forest-dwelling cousins, the Irici have close connections to the other races of Eagarlnia. These elves possess blonde hair and blue eyes, as well as a strong affinity for mana. Due to this, they are true masters of magic, and their floating city serves as a testament to their magical prowess.


Dark Elves (Child: 0-12, Adolescent: 13-25, Adult: 26-650)

All elves are gifted with the ability to connect with all living things, especially those that are pure or primal in nature. However, this changed when the Malevolent Goddess of Resentment, Hypnos, sowed the seeds of hatred within the hearts of a number of elves, where her deep and powerful influence eventually turned them into her own loyal adherents. The followers of Hypnos, later known as the "dark elves," abandoned the light of the surface and instead adopted the darkness of the underworld as their new home. This radical change in environment turned their hair color a silver-white in the likeness of the moon, and their skin darker than ashes. Ultimately, their average lifespans were shortened down to a mere 500 years.

The Samaelites: The dark elves who have embraced the darkness in its entirety, and currently live in the depths of the underworld.


Dwarves (Child: 0-27, Adolescent: 28-60, Adult: 61-280, Elder: 281-400)

As the chosen people of Asnett, dwarves are driven to change and improve anything they can get their hands on in their daily lives. Their limitless creativity allows them to construct not only the world's phenomenal marvels, but many bizarre machines and devices as well. While not to the same extent as the elves, dwarves are also known for their long lifespans, with the longest-living dwarf being recorded at the age of 401.


Ada (Child: 0-11, Adolescent: 12-20, Adult: 21-130, Elder: 131-200)

With humans possessing the agency to choose between Cornett or Asnett, they are able to reproduce with dwarves and elves. Although such relationships between races are relatively rare occurrences, offspring are nonetheless born as a product of their love for one another. Individuals of mixed blood are referred to as "Ada," a general name of those born between humans, elves, and dwarves. Scattered all across the Land of Laud, the Ada possess an average lifespan of roughly 120 years.

The first Ada were originally divided into two groups, as those with dwarven blood were more likely to be influenced by the will of Asnett, while those with elven blood were more likely to be influenced by the will of Cornett instead. But as time passed, more interracial marriages occurred between the Ada, resulting in newer generations inheriting both the dwarven courage and elven wisdom of their predecessors. Ada with blue eyes have a stronger connection to Cornett, while those with red eyes are more attuned with Asnett.


Orcs (Child: 0-6, Adolescent: 7-15, Adult: 16-85, Elder: 86-150)

The average lifespan of an orc is around 110 years, and they believe in Marduk, the Destruction God of Pestilence.

According to legends, the ancestors of the orcs were once light elves, the most powerful of the Eagarlnian races that lived in the high mountain forests. As the world's guardians, they spared no effort in their resistance against the Umbral Realm's invasion, though they were corrupted as a result of their failure. The corruption not only robbed the elves of their precious immortality, but their beautiful appearances and great wisdom as well. Despite this terrible affliction, they continued to stand against the otherworldly invaders, never once yielding even after the world had been delivered to the hands of the Umbral Legion.

After the conclusion of the First Liberation War, the world's denizens finally overthrew the Umbral Legion that had enslaved Eagarlnia to an era of despair for thousands of years. While the humans managed to establish a kingdom for themselves, the corrupted light elves — now known to all as the "orcs" — were condemned, ostracized, and driven out by the other races on the basis of their unsightly appearances. With the world having turned its back on them, their former honor and glory as its guardians — as light elven heroes — became nothing more than a fleeting memory of the past, one that was quickly forgotten for it had no place in their new lives. As a result, the orcs were transformed into a people as cruel and savage as the forsaken lands they were banished to: a necessity for survival in a world as unforgiving as Eagarlnia...

Steam just downloaded some stuff for Moonlighter? Don't be alarmed. We've patched some annoying bugs and issues for PC, XBOX, PS4 & PS5 - some of which you reported and it's been extremely helpful for us. Keep up the great work!

At the same time, there is still some work in fixing issues affecting OSX and Linux versions - these are still in the works and shall be updated soon!

Here's the full list of changes:
  • Fixed Trick Weapon Collector Steam/Xbox achievement and the PS4 trophy
  • Fixed 100% achievement not being properly awarded to some users
  • Fixed infinite loading after reaching the end of the calendar
  • Fixed several random infinite loadings that may have occurred throughout the game
  • Fixed infinite loading on Playstation 4 after Crazy Pete tutorial if the console's language is set to Arabic languages
  • Fixed infinite loading if player returns via portal when the Flying Golem familiar grabs an item
  • Fixed several issues regarding some achievements/trophies
  • Added auto-save right after obtaining the final trick weapon to prevent possible issues with obtaining the achievement/trophy

Making an exploration-type action game !"
TRANSIRUBY #1

One of the reasons for developing TRANSIRUBY is that I wanted to create a exploration-type action game that has a low level of difficulty and is a lot of fun to play. By the way, my experience as a youth with exploration-type action games were THE MAZE OF GALIOUS MSX and DRAGON SLAYER IV: DRASLE FAMILY, so its unclear why the genre is named metrovania. I prefer to call it an exploration-type action game in this text.

To what extent makes an exploration-type action game "difficult" ?
This is my first time diligently making a side-view action game, so this time there is a more logical approach, and I'm thinking about various things while making it. In this case, the first thing I wanted to eliminate solve was the factor that seems to be "difficulty" in exploration-type action games. However, what is considered "difficult" varies from each person, so even if its not difficult for people that are good at action games, it could be extremely difficult for people that are not. Furthermore, there is a sense of accomplishment when clearing a difficult game so "difficult = no good" is not necessarily the reason. For those who find a game's barrier "difficult" to progress due to boss battles will be excited. But, I don't want it to be disliked for being too difficult to proceed...right ? So, what is considered difficult to people like me who aren't good at action games ?


Difficult terrain !
One of the factors of exploration-type games is "a continuation of high degree action that demands terrain" .Cliff edge jump→ wall clinging→ mid-aerial dash → Continous cliff edge jumping on vanshing platform...etc. Poorly skilled people will reach their limit here. Also, when I thought I had passed through a difficult level route, it was actually half and I was required to make full use of the LR button and stick…I definitely reached my limit. And, another pattern is that "the terrain is not difficult, but there is a time limit due to forced sidescrolling". The thing is...the terrain becomes a little more complicated, as the walls and flames appear from behind along with the forced scrolling. The draining part is the "little puzzle-like terrain" + "starting the game from the begining after dying", as far as the"little puzzle-like terrain" is concerned, its mainly there to test your memory and understand the feeling of taking the correct route. I can't focus on concentrating so I gave up.

Seperate the high difficulty level route
In TRANSIRUBY, we decided to seperate the high difficulty level routes from the main route that is required to clear the game. If you just want to see the ending, it's OK not to play the high difficulty route. Regardless of gaming skills, you can playthrough the main route to the ending just to enjoy a common experience. For those who want to clear the game with 100%, we have adjusted the level design so that you can take on the challenge of the high difficulty route and collect items.

Forced scrolling & time limit are gimmicks...
In TRANSIRUBY, "approaching barrier" doesn't exist however...there isn't a large scale thing either. TRANSIRUBY's map is not a room unit...which is one of the reasons why 1 area 1 area's extent is no more than 200 images is seamlessly tide together, as the result it was difficult to insert the forced scrolling and gimmicks that take up a whole screen. Well, this is not a big thing but there's a rotating saw that was placed between a vertical passage as the elevator slowly rises...that's like a gimmick. It feels like experiencing a theme park attraction in a safe place but dangerous atmosphere. "It looks very dangerous, but its totally safe" is often in production of games that nowadays put emphasis on atmosphere.

Shorten the main route's difficulty level route
Although I said that the high difficulty level route will be seperated from the main route, it would be a boring game if there wasn't modulation in the route, as mentioned above "mostly" it's called a short high difficulty route that's easy to recover and is occasionally inserted. Also, it appears that the route looks difficult but is actually easy and
achieves a visual sense of accomplishment like the rotating saw mentioned above. What I think about in terms of level design is that if you can clear even the most difficult route in one shot, it's an easy route for that person and sure enough the difficulty level has been lowered so its a lot of fun. Difficult !

Creator's taste
As I wrote in the begining, this doesn't mean that "difficult = no good. Interesting games are also difficult. However, since the game is a luxury item, there is always a case that it doesn't suit the player's taste, especially in indie games, the creator's taste is strongly reflected rather than content that is generally accepted, which makes that's much more appealing. And if that taste is received by the general public, it feels like a huge praise. No, really. So, TRANSIRUBY was made according to my recent taste, along with "difficult scraps " that have been connected to it.... This went on too long, so I'll continue next time.
