The hype train continues as we roll into Patch 1.4.0 station before continuing on to Steeltown. Is that our final stop? No, it won’t be, but it’s a nice place and we recommend getting out and stretching your legs. In addition to the Crafting system we’ve already outlined coming in this next (free) update, we have some oft-requested features to make managing your animal companion coterie a real cinch.
Animal Companion Kennel
Chief among the new animal companion-focused changes hitting in Patch 1.4.0 is the Animal Companion Kennel. This is a safe, warm, and nurturing environment that all of your furry and spiky friends can hang out when you’re not using them to murder clown gangs or robots. Right now, animal companions don’t hang around if you dismiss them, but with the Kennel they’ll have a home they automatically return to. That lets you build up a cadre of canines and cats, and pick and choose as you need… or just collect ‘em all!
Not only do your furry friends return to the Kennel when you dismiss them, but if their owner leaves the squad (or permanently dies in battle) their animal companion will automatically return to the Kennel next time you zone to a different level. Of course, that’s assuming they survive the combat themselves.
If you’re not particularly fond of a companion, you can release them back into the wild from the Kennel too, but we honestly don’t know why you’d ever do that. They need you and it’s cold out there. One last note, any animal companions that have run away before this update won’t automagically reappear in the Kennel—they’ll have to be tamed again, where possible.
Companion Type Limit … Gone!
What’s with those pesky companion type limits, anyway? One wolf, one pig … ONE cat!? You need at least three cats. Rules be damned, we’re opening the floodgates of fur and horns! With Patch 1.4.0, you’ll be able to bring along whatever animal companions you damn well please.
Animal Portrait & UI Improvements
We’re also upgrading our character portrait system to show what pet a specific Ranger has with them, and a health bar so you can keep tabs on their condition. This should greatly help in keeping track during combat.
You can also mouse over the pet icon to get a tooltip of current stats.
Polly Want a Crack-their Skulls Open?
Rounding out the list of animal-related changes, we let the shackles off the writing team (who we definitely don’t really keep shackled so please don’t look into it) and had them seriously upgrade the smack-talk of our favorite foulmouthed featherbrain. Polly now has a brand-new Demoralize ability in combat, replete with many, many blasphemy-laden insults he’ll lob your enemies’ way. It’s as fun as it sounds—here’s just a taste of the full repertoire.
Warning: Not Safe for… well… pretty much anyone, anywhere.
Last, but not least, we’ve put the kibosh on some annoying bugs that would sometimes cause non-animal followers (Provost, Party Pal, etc.) to vanish during gameplay. They can still get their brains splattered or bolts smashed if you’re not careful, but there should be less chance of them getting lost during your post-apocalyptic adventure.
Oh, and incase it wasn’t clear, non-animal companions are not animals and aren’t stored in the kennel.
We hope you’re excited for Patch 1.4.0 as we close in on its release in the next couple weeks. If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out the Crafting article we’ve published, and keep an eye out for more Patch 1.4.0 and The Battle of Steeltown feature previews as we roll toward launch.
In this release, we deployed a more flexible queuing functionality, brought back an improved version of Ceres Awakens, and fixed a handful of bugs.
We also added a new “Deep Space Explorers” outfit to the market, and put some of our hero ships on sale.
Here’s the detailed scoop:
QUICK MATCH (FAVORITES) QUEUE
Before this release, you could either queue for ANY game mode or for only one. However, some Captains prefer to play some of the game modes, but not all.
With this in mind, we added flexibility to the queue. Now players can select which game modes are their “favorite” and only queue for those.
When you are in the Game Mode Selection screen, you will notice two things:
The ANY button was replaced by a QUICK MATCH button.
Each game mode has a GREY LIGHTNING BOLT in the lower right of the buttons. If you click this lightning bolt, it will turn blue, setting this game mode as a "Favorite". Clicking it again will remove it from your favorites. On PS4 this is done by highlighting the game mode and pressing the Triangle button.
Once you have set all your “Favorites,” select the QUICK MATCH game mode and click PLAY. This will queue you ONLY for the game modes you selected as “Favorite.”
After you select your “Favorites,” the QUICK MATCH option on the Home screen will also queue you only for the game modes you selected in the last Tier you queued for.
To show you how this works, we made a short video tutorial for the new QUICK MATCH functionality. We hope it’s useful!
CERES REAWAKENS
The last time we made Ceres Awakens available, we received feedback about the placement of tech caches: they were too far away from where ships would fight. Of course, this made it too difficult for slower ships to pick up the caches and remain effective.
In the improved version of the game mode, we moved most of the spawn locations of the caches to areas where fighting would naturally occur. So, now the tech caches are easier to grab and have the ability to impact the heart of the battles.
We also created an added incentive to collecting tech caches by adding scoring events for each cache you pick up and an additional bonus for every third cache you pick up. You’ll also receive XPs and credits per scoring event.
NEW OUTFIT: DEEP SPACE SURVIVAL SUIT, HELMET, AND CAPTAIN TINT.
Dating back to the Golden Age of Space Exploration, the Deep Space Survival Suit (or DS3) was critical in protecting the first human explorers as they traveled into the far reaches of the Solar System. After an eruption on Ceres revealed a large stockpile of DS3s, it has since been re-embraced for its elegance and durability.

BALANCE CHANGES AND BUG FIXES
Stronger Scattergun Broadsides - We thought Scattergun Broadsides were a little weak. So we decided to put more boom in your boomstick. We buffed the damage but also gave them a little more lock on range and blast radius to make them a bit more effective. Let us know if we went too far or not far enough. We fully expect more tweaks to be needed here.
These are the specific changes:
Number of projectiles per shoot now T3 - 10, T4 - 15, T5 - 20
Damage per projectile now T3 - 450, T4 - 360, T5 - 305
Damage Radius now 300m for all tiers
Range increased to 1400m for all tiers
Moved Emblem attachment point on the Marauder forecastle to an appropriate location.
Invictus Primary Weapon: Fixed reload time being longer with power to weapons.
Hey everyone Happy Friday! We know that the current dynamic weather has issues and one reason the next release has taken a bit longer is making sure the weather was improved and does not impede gameplay in the next release.
This screenshot shows some of the updates that now allow us to fine tune the exact weather probabilities on each course, including being able to eventually switch seasons.
We're continuing to work hard and will get the next release out asap.
Cheers and thanks for supporting UDG, Joshua - Lead Dev.
