Hell Let Loose - Jonno
Hey everyone,

Welcome to Dev Brief #122!

This week we're going to preview the PPSh-41 and show off some of the faces that will represent the Soviet Union in-game!

The PPSh-41

The PPSh-41 was one of the Soviet Union's primary submachine guns of the Second World War. A simplified design made to be built rapidly with limited machining operations, the PPSh-41 used a heavy gauge steel stamping for most of its construction. It was originally issued with 71 round drum magazines copied from a Finnish design, but these were phased out in favor of more traditional stick type magazines.

Reliability was generally high even with the drum magazines, though these were complex and difficult to load. In addition, issues with manufacturing tolerances meant drum magazines were not readily interchangeable between guns. Drums needed to be properly "fitted" to their assigned submachine guns to feed reliably, though this was resolved somewhat by the introduction of the smaller 35 round stick types.

In combat, the PPSh-41 performed admirably. Soldiers appreciated the high fire rate and reliability in close-quarters combat, though the Soviet Union would eventually supplement the PPSh-41 in production with the even simpler PPS-43. The submachine gun as a class would form a major component of Soviet unit composition. Entire platoons would be equipped with PPSh-41s to spearhead an offensive action.

In Hell Let Loose, the PPSh-41 comes in two variants - one with a 35 round stick magazine and the other with the iconic 71 round drum magazine. While the stick magazine benefits from a faster reload and faster transition to ADS, it suffers from slightly increased recoil over time due to its lighter stick magazine. The drum magazine variant benefits from the increased magazine size and slightly lower sustained recoil due to its weight, but has a slower ADS transition and reload time.

Soldiers of the Soviet Union

In designing the faces of our Soviet faction, we endeavoured to take into account the historically broad array of different people groups that were brought together to fight a common enemy. Because of the need to muster every able man for the war effort, soldiers were conscripted from all over the USSR, from the Baltic sea to the Baikal.

Regardless of their origins, each and every Soviet soldier was equal in the face of combat.

That wraps up this week's Dev Brief!

What other weapons would you like to see in-game? Who's your favourite Soviet soldier so far? Let us know in the comments!

We'll see you on the frontline!

Aground - David Maletz
A modder found potential exploits that a malicious modder could use in Aground (if you installed their mod). This patch blocks those exploits. As far as we know, no mods took advantage of these exploits, and this version is immune to them.
Chornobyl Liquidators - LMG_Radek

Hi everyone! Recently we've been quite busy with designing a smooth and good looking user interface for the game and we wanted to show you a little peek from those designs!

Knowledge is power - as they say. In Chernobyl Liquidators Simulator this particular saying might hold even more truth - without the proper knowledge we can't even imagine ourselves succeeding at reaching the goals and fulfilling the requested tasks. Thankfully we've been thinking about making sure that our players will know everything they need in order to accomplish their missions and that is why the game will feed you all important information through either dialogue or hint windows. Sometimes those two will even be combined!

We've decided on implementing hint windows to make sure that all the required information are at your disposal when you need them. The game will gradually teach you about mechanics and features in a way that is unobtrusive but appropriate. You can't really miss them but they will also not take away your attention from other things that are happening in the game. They can also be easily dismissed by pressing appropriate button.

Those windows are also very useful as tutorial windows. When you'll start out the game they will be much more common as they will painlessly introduce you to various options implemented in the game. First time you will have to climb a ledge or use a medicine you will be informed about how to do it, what button to press or what you need to look out for. It's all very handy and designed to enhance your first few moments within the game.

Keep in mind that while we're proud of our designs we always reserve ourselves the possibility of implementing changes to them!

Stay tuned for the next time and some more information from Lt. Pravyk...

Kind regards,
Chernobyl Liquidators Simulator Team

Smalland: Survive the Wilds - Danny_Merge
Hey everyone!

We get lots of great questions from the community so we’re aiming to pull out a couple of questions every couple of weeks to answer in a bit more depth.

We would love to invite you to join the Smalland discord to really get involved in the conversation which you can find here.

Off the back of the reveal of our lovely new artwork and screenshots, a couple of good questions came up that we thought would be great to address for our first FAQ Friday post!

Can we build on the side of trees?

We're currently working on a system where you can build anything you like, anywhere, but also have specific areas where you can build your intricate bases around a certain point, and then be able to move servers, play with old friends, new friends, by yourself, whatever, and take your base with you. This adds both creative freedoms but also lots of technical constraints and server details that we're looking into, but that's our goal.

The construction itself is a fairly standard approach to survival games, but weather and seasons also play into it. It's also going to be stylised around the lore of Smalland as there are certain characteristics that we want to reflect.

Can I ride on dragonflies?

Yes, you can ride on Dragonflies! They are found in areas of Smalland with still water and while they are more scarce, they do survive Autumn and Winter.

Because of how common they are, and that they are able to survive all seasons, the Dragonfly acts as a reliable noble steed and companion.

It has a method of attack but will rely on the player doing most of the work in combat. The Dragonfly is built for speed, so whilst it won’t have the highest health or armour, it’s fast and has the massive advantage of flight.

Hope you found that insightful and watch this space for regular updates on some deeper answers to your questions!
