Zooconomy - Mamont Ru$$eL`
Today we are gonna meet a very colourful bird with a beautiful beak, native to the north of the Atlantic ocean - Atlantic puffin.

Atlantic puffin

The Atlantic puffin is sturdily built with a thick-set neck and short wings and tail. The male is generally slightly larger than the female, but they are coloured alike. The forehead, crown, and nape are glossy black, as are the back, wings, and tail. A broad, black collar extends around the neck and throat. On each side of the head is a large, lozenge-shaped area of very pale grey. These face patches taper to a point and nearly meet at the back of the neck. The shape of the head creates a crease extending from the eye to the hindmost point of each patch, giving the appearance of a grey streak. The eye looks almost triangular in shape because of a small, peaked area of horny blue-grey skin above it and a rectangular patch below. The irises are brown or very dark blue and each has red orbital ring. The under parts of the bird, the breast, belly and under tail coverts, are white. By the end of the breeding season, the black plumage may have lost its shine or even taken on a slightly brown tinge. The legs are short and set well back on the body, giving the bird its upright stance when on land. Both legs and large webbed feet are bright orange, contrasting with the sharp, black claws

The beak is very distinctive. From the side, the beak is broad and triangular, but viewed from above, it is narrow. The half near the tip is orange-red and the half near to the head is slate grey. A yellow, chevron-shaped ridge separates the two parts, with a yellow, fleshy strip at the base of the bill. At the joint of the two mandibles is a yellow, wrinkled rosette. The exact proportions of the beak vary with the age of the bird. In an immature individual, the beak has reached its full length, but it is not as broad as that of an adult. With time the bill deepens, the upper edge curves, and a kink develops at its base. The bird has a powerful bite.

The Atlantic puffin has a direct flight, typically 10 m (33 ft) above the sea surface and higher over the water than most other auks. It mostly moves by paddling along efficiently with its webbed feet and seldom takes to the air. It is typically silent at sea, except for the soft purring sounds it sometimes makes in flight. At the breeding colony, it is quiet above ground, but in its burrow makes a growling sound somewhat resembling a chainsaw being revved up. Atlantic puffins lead solitary existences when out at sea, and this part of their lives has been little studied, as the task of finding even one bird on the vast ocean is formidable. When at sea, the Atlantic puffin bobs about like a cork, propelling itself through the water with powerful thrusts of its feet and keeping itself turned into the wind, even when resting and apparently asleep.

Distribution
The Atlantic puffin is a bird of the colder waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. It breeds on the coasts of northwest Europe, the Arctic fringes, and eastern North America. More than 90% of the global population is found in Europe and colonies in Iceland alone are home to 60% of the world's Atlantic puffins. The largest colony in the western Atlantic (estimated at more than 260,000 pairs) can be found at the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, south of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Other major breeding locations include the north and west coasts of Norway, the Faroe Islands, the Shetland and Orkney Islands, the west coast of Greenland, and the coasts of Newfoundland. Smaller-sized colonies are also found elsewhere in the British Isles, the Murmansk area of Russia, Novaya Zemlya, Spitzbergen, Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Maine. Islands seem particularly attractive to the birds for breeding as compared to mainland sites

While at sea, the bird ranges widely across the North Atlantic Ocean, including the North Sea, and may enter the Arctic Circle. In the summer, its southern limit stretches from northern France to Maine and in the winter, the bird may range as far south as the Mediterranean Sea and North Carolina. In Maine, light level geolocators have been attached to the legs of puffins, which store information on their whereabouts. The birds need to be recaptured to access the information, a difficult task. One bird was found to have covered 4,800 miles (7,700 km) of ocean in eight months, traveling northwards to the northern Labrador Sea then southeastward to the mid-Atlantic before returning to land.

In a long-living bird with a small clutch size such as the Atlantic puffin, the survival rate of adults is an important factor influencing the success of the species. Only 5% of the ringed puffins that failed to reappear at the colony did so during the breeding season. The rest were lost some time between departing from land in the summer and reappearing the following spring. The birds spend the winter widely spread out in the open ocean, though a tendency exists for individuals from different colonies to overwinter in different areas.

Conservation

In 2015, the International Union for Conservation of Nature upgraded its status from "least concern" to "vulnerable". This was caused by a review that revealed a rapid and ongoing population decline in its European range. Trends elsewhere are unknown. Some of the causes of population decline may be increased predation by gulls and skuas, the introduction of rats, cats, dogs, and foxes onto some islands used for nesting, contamination by toxic residues, drowning in fishing nets, declining food supplies, and climate change.

On the island of Lundy, the number of puffins decreased from 3,500 pairs in 1939 to 10 pairs in 2000. This was mainly due to the rats that had proliferated on the island and were eating eggs and young chicks. Following the elimination of the rats, populations were expected to recover, and in 2005, a juvenile was seen, believed to be the first chick raised on the island for 30 years.

Taking damage generates neutral experience based on your defense, the Anti AFK system has been improved for the arrival of this new concept and there will be specific rules for how the system works.

The control effect was finally implemented and it works as follows (remembering that the items had the value of modified control):
Each 1 control point equals 0.01 seconds in the duration of the damaged state and generates greater chances of keeping monsters.
focused on you.
Each 1 point of resistance to control is equivalent to 1% reduction in control states (but does not apply to the damaged state).

Change to critical damage (physical only):
Critical damage now has 85% increased damage, before it was 50%.

New effects for items:
We have created a new status logic for items based on item classes: Fighter, Assassin, Tank, Mage and Sniper.

The physical penetration effect has been added for some in-game items. (maximum to be reached as 30%)
The magic penetration effect has been added for some in-game items. (maximum to be reached as 10%)

STAR FLEET II - Krellan Commander Version 2.0 - BrianRubin
Hey y'all, Brian here, and welcome to the March Star Fleet II development update. This was a pretty busy month, development-wise. Early in the month we got 1.6 Release 10, with new features to the CCC, improved mines, improved AI and much more, and release 10 got a bunch of patches to lead up to release 11, which dropped yesterday. Here are the details!

  • 1,6 Release 10 (3/6/21) - This release included improvements to both enemy and friendly AI, new features to the CCC like a navigation command, improved/more deadly mines along with more ways to avoid them, such as slowing down and coming to a stop. Release 10 received around half a dozen patches throughout the month to fix various problems that cropped up, such as speeding through a minefield if your target was another system, or planetary invasion zone selection problems.
  • 1.6 Release 11 (3/30/21) - Much of the work leading up to Release 11 involved moving various functions to overlays so they take up less memory, and fixing more problems that cropped up as a result of issues with Release 10. As of this writing, it seems as if Release 11 is stable enough that Trevor can move forward working on the next major version of the game.

I seriously hope that, in the next entry, I'll be able to tell you about 1.7. It apparently has some new features that will make admiral's lives much more challenging. Trevor says it's mere weeks away, and he's teasing us a LOT with new features that he won't specify.

Finally, we moved our internal playtest version from being standalone now to Steam! This will definitely help make sure we're all using the exact same version as we test for bugs and come up with ideas for new features.

I couldn't be more excited about how development is coming along, and I can't wait to bring you this game once it's ready! Thanks for reading y'all, and I'll see you both next month for another dev update and in the Monday Star Fleet II streams! Have a great one y'all!

RetroArch - Gadsby
Written by jdgleaver

This is a followup article to our main release blog post, which can be read here.

Official support for OpenDingux devices such as the RG350M, RG280V and GCW-Zero was added last December; a full round-up of features and highlights can be found in the original announcement here. Version 1.9.1 represents the first stable release for this platform.

As an integrated member of the RetroArch family, the OpenDingux port benefits from all frontend development work – but a major addition for this release is a separate, optimised build for OpenDingux Beta (link here). This is an updated, modern firmware (compatible with many devices) which offers significantly improved performance. RetroArch is one of the first applications on OpenDingux Beta to enable configuration of the hardware IPU (Image Processing Unit), with menu-based control of aspect ratio/integer scaling and image filtering method (available on Beta releases after 16/03/2021). Users who prefer to remain on stable operating systems need not fear, however: RetroArch will always be optimised for both beta and stock firmwares.

Aside from RetroArch itself, expanding the library of available cores has been a major focus of this release. Launching initially with 20 hand-picked cores, a further seven have been added to the list:

  • Mr.Boom
  • O2EM (Magnavox Odyssey2 / Phillips Videopac+)
  • Potator (Watara Supervision)
  • ProSystem (Atari 7800)
  • ScummVM (Note: High resolution games unsupported)
  • Stella 2014 (Atari 2600)
  • TIC-80

All of these cores have excellent performance on OpenDingux devices (with the mild exception of TIC-80, which can be a demanding system on many platforms – yet a number of popular carts run full speed). It should also be noted that when building cores for OpenDingux, we don’t just hit compile and call it a day. This is a curated port, and care is taken to clean up code and add features wherever possible – and these additions improve the user experience on *all* platforms. For example:

O2EM
  • The model and region of the emulated console (Odyssey 2, Videopac+ G7400) can now be specified via core options
  • A volume control and optional low pass audio filter have been added, along with audio fixes/performance improvements
  • An ‘Interframe Blending’ option has been added, used to simulate CRT ghosting effects
  • A ‘Crop Overscan’ option has been added
  • Gamepad inputs can now be swapped (required for a number of games), and numeric keys have been mapped to gamepad buttons
  • The rendering of the virtual keyboard has been optimised, reducing performance overheads by 44%-63%
  • Save states have been fixed

Potator
  • This newly-added core was ported specifically for use on OpenDingux devices!

ProSystem
  • 16 bit colour depth support has been added for improved rendering performance
  • An optional low pass audio filter has been added, along with general audio quality improvements
  • A dual stick controller mode has been added for games such as Robotron: 2084

Stella 2014
  • 16 bit colour depth support has been added for improved rendering performance
  • An ‘Interframe Blending’ option has been added, used to simulate CRT ghosting effects and remove screen flicker
  • An optional low pass audio filter has been added
  • Full analog paddle support is now available

TIC-80
  • Comprehensive support for mouse input via gamepad has been added

And one more gift for OpenDingux users: the gpSP core now has a fully functional dynarec, courtesy of davidgf. This means full speed GBA emulation, with plenty of headroom for video filters, colour correction and inter-frame blending!

(gpSP has also seen many other fundamental improvements, too many to list here – further updates will be covered in a separate post)

You can find blog post here.
