After a long and bloody war and a devastating winter, the start of spring brought hope. The Scourge of Winter lay dead with his Archons, the Desecrators had been cleared out of Ostaria, and for the kingdom of Ungverija, a new era of peace and plenty seemed to be dawning.
The cost of raising armies in winter had been considerable, but with a grateful and newly-liberated neighbour to the north–ruled by a new monarch following the abdication of old King Conrad’s abdication–and the agents of the Merchant’s Guild bringing bustling trade to the streets of Turul Város, only the most mealy-mouthed pessimists would disagree that the future looked a little brighter.
However, there were signs that all was not well in the kingdom. Farmers reported an increasing number of wolf attacks on livestock, mostly in the east of the kingdom around Vajk’s Lake. A beast-like howling could be heard echoing across the water at night, and strange lights were seen flickering in the deep forests. Peasants barred their doors at sundown, village watchmen patrolled in pairs, and even the highborn kept loaded firearms at hand before settling down to restless sleep. Soon, people started to go missing too, and rumours began to circulate that something evil had crept down into the kingdom while the armies of Turul Város were liberating the North.
The guards on duty in Turul Város were met with an unexpected sight one day when a bearded barbarian warrior approached the gates. He was a man of the Northlands, clad in iron and furs, carrying a war horn, and with an honour guard at his back. As the host marched closer, the captain of the watch was surprised to see that his bodyguards were all women.
The warrior identified himself as Jarl Ulvar, a leader of the Northmen, who revealed that he was on a mission from the High Kin to kill the renegade warlord Guthrom Red-Eye. The man had fled justice in his homeland along with a band of his most devout followers, all calling themselves the Sons of Fenrir. Until such time that Guthrom and his men could be apprehended, Ulvar offered the Ungverijans the services of his army. Before anyone could ask to see this army, Ulvar slung his horn from his shoulder, blew it once, and summoned a great host of axe-toting warriors from the treeline behind him.
Meanwhile, on the banks of the Kiralyi river, Guthrom Red-Eye and his followers were finishing a final ceremony: a ritual sacrifice to the wolf-god Fenrir. The signs had been seen, the appropriate offerings made, and now the Sons of Fenrir set out for battle. Howling like a pack of hellhounds, they descended on defenceless villages and merchant caravans, burning and killing without pity.
Guthrom’s followers would begin with a shock attack, then the survivors would be offered the choice: Guthrom as your king, or be next on the altar. By this method, a small kingdom was sliced out of Ungverija which attracted every kind of brigand and bandit to the service of Jarl Guthrom…

A NOTE FROM THE DEVELOPERS
These past 3 years have gone by super quickly, and we are humbled and grateful for each and every one of you. Without you, our players, we would not have been able to continue with the development of Vermintide 2 and now Darktide as well. Thank you for all of your feedback, fan art, bug reports, streaming, and of course, thank you for loving Vermintide 2. Let’s celebrate together to highlight the past 3 years, and the years to come!
The Thane of Scourge was defeated at Eisschloss in the winter of 1064, yet the lands of Ostaria were still in chaos. Internal strife was rampant and a new lord had claimed its capital—Augolia. Things were also beginning to look grim for Ungverija in the south. The Yatti royals had to protect their land from the Herazlan Empire to the south, while also defending against the northern lord Valen.
Rumors of the Scourge continued, and the various factions all wished to know their true identity. In Turul Város the following rumor spread: On a dark snow night, a camp guard saw through a falling blanked of snow as the commander led someone into his tent. As the person neared a faint campfire, the guard saw his gleaming black armor—one of the Scourge.
Others still claimed that the Scourge continued their assault. That they had sent their army south and were to cross the border.
Even without these rumors, the wolf packs roaming the nation's borders made the people uneasy. The Empire had sent scouts, yet all disappeared amidst the deep forests. When they were found again nothing remained but their bones. The refugees that had previously fled the harsh snowstorms had now returned home. They lay sleepless in the night as wolves howled in the dark. The people began to speculate that the Scourge's invasion was but the beginning.
To remedy the situation, Ungverija mobilized their entire army, and requested aid from the Mercenary Guild. While they would normally refuse without a second's thought, this time they immediately responded and gave the Empire their full support. Many a mercenary gathered in Turul Város, many of which had never once set foot there.
All the while, a new power quickly rose in might within the Empire's border, on the bank of Vajk's Lake. While the army was busy at the borders, they made their way into the land within and plundered settlements by the river. Once set up, they began to recruit those willing to bolster their ranks.
They were clad in simple armors and carried crude weapons. Fought like savages they did, yet all failed to capture them. Those that survived alive spoke of them: these bandits surge like windborne flame, plundering and pillages, only to leave just as quickly on their longboats. The rumors spread within the Empire, and chaos ensued.
Who were they? Whence had they came? No one knew. But one thing was for certain: they were as ruthless as they were mad—incarnations of primal savagery. Terror gripped the land and people were forced to follow their instincts. To leap into the whirlpool head-first and try to survive by stepping upon the corpses of the dead, to fight for each gasp of air.
