Paper Pirates - IterationGames
Events That Go On and On
We’re adding a new class of events to Paper Pirates, and reclassifying some of the old events to add clarity and readability to the game! ‘Ongoing Events’ are events which trigger some subtle rule or state change to the game, which lasts until something happens. You can see which ongoing events are currently in play by hovering over the ongoing event tabs in the top left of the main screen, or checking the ‘Ongoing Events’ pop-up from the menu on your device.

Six Brand New Events
With ongoing events, we’ve not only reclassified some existing events, but we’re introducing six brand new events too! This brings the number of events in Paper Pirates - not including events only available through seasonal celebrations - up to forty-two!

Five of these are new ongoing events, and one of them is a regular event, but they’re all aimed at switching up the way you play! From Seeing Red, which prevents pirates from skipping their vote until someone is voted overboard, to Captain’s Fortune, which gives the captain three job choices at the start of each day instead of two until a job is successful, we’re sure these new events will mix up your games and add new strategies!

Ten New Achievements
With new events, once again comes a bumper crop of new achievements - and as always, each new achievement comes with a new hat, which you can unlock as soon as you earn the achievement. If you want to be the most fashionable pirate on the seven seas, track down any of the ten new achievements as quickly as you can, and try out the new hats before the rest of yer crew!

Play Dress-up in Paper Pirates!
Sam Sherbot has been visiting many far off regions collecting the very best top pirate fashions from all over the world for sale in the Outfit Shop, all ready for you to play dress-up! They’ve brought back over 40 new items for you to spend your hard-earned pieces of eight on, many of which make perfectly coordinated outfit sets! Make sure that after playing a game or completing a bounty you check out the Outfit Shop to see what new things you can buy! If you’ve got one piece of a set, don’t forget to play more games so that you can get the other pieces - it would be a crime to miss out!

Don’t forget that you can join us every Saturday at 8pm GMT on Twitch for our weekly dev stream, or pop by our YouTube channel to see Let’s Plays of Paper Pirates, How To videos and more! Or if you’re looking for a crew to set sail with make sure to join our Discord!

Ring in the New Year on the Seven Seas with Soggy Hogmanay!

Throughout early January, we’re celebrating with the fifth Paper Pirates Seasonal Celebration, Soggy Hogmanay! Running from 1st January - 14th January, celebrate the start of the New Year with a festival of glad tidings, and a whole host of seasonal goodies in Paper Pirates!

Limited Time Costumes
During Soggy Hogmanay, Sam Sherbot has some new outfit options available to unlock in the Outfit Shop! If you buy an outfit option during Soggy Hogmanay, you can wear it all year round - but the items will be disappearing from sale when the event is over, so don’t delay and buy today!

The full list of outfit items available during Soggy Hogmanay is:

  • Faces - Masquerade (Light)
  • Faces - Masquerade (Dark)
  • Faces - Clock Face
  • Faces - Disco Ball
  • Shirt - Tee (Fireworks)
  • Shirt - Tee (2021)

Additionally, during Soggy Hogmanay, pirates will be able to wear a unique hat, available to everyone in voyages started during the event. Once the event’s over, the hat will disappear from your collection until next year, so be sure to wear them while you can!

The ‘Fastest First Foot’ Event!

Go on a sailing adventure during Soggy Hogmanay, and each day there is a chance you may encounter the ‘Fastest First Foot’ event, inspired by the Hogmanay tradition of First Footing. As the crew return from an adventure on a deserted treasure island, they race to see who has the honour of first footing the pirate ship. Those pirates who make it back first are granted good fortune for the coming voyage - and will be given a higher rank on the ship accordingly! Have your devices at the ready and press a button as soon as it appears, and any pirate has the chance of seizing the rank of captain!

Resolution Bounty
To help ring in the New Year, and start as you mean to go on, the bounty board is offering you a New Year’s Resolution Bounty! Throughout the duration of Soggy Hogmanay, you will have one giant bounty to complete! If you complete that one bounty over the course of the two-week celebration, you will receive a truly staggering number of coins in celebration and you’ll be well on the way to a prosperous 2021. It’s just too good to miss!

Hogmanay Celebrations in the Photo Booth
To celebrate the arrival of the new year, there are a small number of limited-time Foils and Backgrounds available in the Photo Booth, in the Captain’s Log. Take the opportunity to snap your favourite pirate templates, and share any pics you take!

Soggy Hogmanay Bots
Invite bots into your game during Soggy Hogmanay, and you may find some of the regular crew replaced with special New Year’s revellers, out to help you ring in the new year! They’ll only join your games during Soggy Hogmanay, but these bots have their own personalities and appearances for you to enjoy.

Major adjustments
Large issues / bugs that affected gameplay and have been addressed.
  • Monthly income duplication: Fixed a bug where players would get paid twice at the start of each month
  • Added in missing worker requirements when viewing building such as temples and civic services. All buildings that support workers will now show them.

Minor Adjustments
These are mostly small changes and should address behind the scenes issues or edge cases
  • Removed placeholder text on foundry and mason
  • Fixed bug when you have the primary and secondary build menus open and press the menu button in the toolbar, only the primary menu would close.
  • Senate mission rewards: When a time reward was given (e.g 4 weeks gained), visually it didn't show in the popup. This has been fixed
  • UI bugs (open tags such as </b>) have been addressed in the UI, this should be fixed

Happy New Year, Mayors!

Our update for this final week of the year features preparation for tourism features on the horizon. Our official release now supports Steam Workshop!

Also, a big thank you to everyone who has supported us during this Winter Steam Sale. Our community is growing all the time, and we hope the stable branch supporting mods in a more robust fashion will help that along.

These are the patch notes:
Version 0.0.57.8 ALPHA
    Features
  • Neighboring cities have been revamped.
  • There are now large and small neighboring cities.
  • The game now populates neighboring cities when generating a new map, and it simulates five years of activity before the start.
  • Neighboring cities now have NewTrack stations, allowing you to connect your train lines to your neighbors.
The above changes only apply to newly generated maps.

    Improvements
  • Increased population growth.
  • Freight deliveries are now more frequent.
  • Improved performance when placing blueprints.
  • Trains and buses now unload their passengers faster. The rate is controlled by CAlightingRate. This only applies to unloading; Passenger loading rate is unchanged.
  • The statistic "National Stock Index" (National Economy > Macros) is now the "National Stock Market Index".
  • Neighboring cities now have more educated people.

    Bugfixes
  • Lua API: Fixed an issue in getStatisticAvg() where it would return an incorrect value.
  • Building Designer: Fixing some overlapping icons in the load menu preview image.
  • Fixed a bug where routes without a possible mass transit solution would be recomputed rather than cached.

For more information on the stable release, see the previous patch notes linked here.

Check out this update via the Betas tab. Right-click NewCity in your Steam Library and select Properties. Click the dropdown under the Betas tab and choose the "test - Testing branch". You can opt-out by choosing "NONE - Opt-out of all beta programs" instead. Going from one to the other will trigger an update as Steam fetches you the desired branch.

We really appreciate all the feedback and bug reports here on Steam and Discord! Please keep posting your thoughts and touching base with us.

Please follow us on Twitter for more upcoming announcements.

We wish you all a great 2021.

Whelp, it didn't quite land at the end of 2020, but 2021 is here and we're starting you folks off with a new patch! You get Balance Updates, Optimization Options, New Achievements, New Cosmetics, Bug Fixes, and best of all... New Maps!

Is that a Campaign map... in Multiplayer?

Map Variants
Every FFA & Teams map now features an alternate version of it, all based off the versions seen in the Campaign. Effectively, we're adding 8 New Maps to the game! These variants are generally more difficult than the standard versions, some of them supporting 3 or even 4 Paths.

Remember this old gem from initial Early Access release? It's baaack!

Speaking of paths, some of our maps are designed to be played as 2 Path maps. As such, we're adjusting the Paths option. Instead of choosing between 1 or 2 Paths, you'll now choose between:
  • Standard: Play the map the way it's meant to be played. It'll have 1 or 2 Paths on by default.
  • Advanced: Play an advanced version of the map, containing at least 2 Paths and scaling up to 4.
    • For some of the base maps, Standard & Advanced will be one and the same.
That said, you'll no longer be able to play certain maps as 1 Path.

RIP Wasteland as the easiest 1-Path map.

New Achievements & Cosmetics
  • Each map now has the following Achievements:
    • Alternate: Clear Wave 55 of [Map] Variant on Hard Difficulty
    • Elite: Clear Wave 55 of [Map] Variant on Very Hard + Advanced Paths
  • The Leprechaun & Jester Hats have been updated.
  • 5 New Hats!
    • Ho Ho Hat
    • Double Wreath
    • Viking Helm
    • College Cap
    • Flamingo

It's a bit late, but Merry Christmas!

Improvements
  • VFX will no longer render off-screen, which should drastically help end-game lag.
  • Reduced Ranked Requirement from Level 20 to 15.
  • Graphics Options have been added:
    • Anisotropic Filter: Turn it on to improve texture quality at a distance, especially when viewed at an angle. Good for screenshots. Off by default.
    • Shadows: Choose between Hard and Soft Shadows.
    • AO Quality: Ambient Occlusion, aka draws shadows at intersections. Choose between Off, Low, Medium, and High.
  • Adjusted Score Thresholds for some Missions in Chapter 3. Should make 4 Stars a bit easier to do.
  • The paths for 1-4 Players have been adjusted for Atlantis.
  • War Mode Ability Cooldowns reduced by roughly 20% across the board.
  • Added Turkish localization.

Fixes
  • Fixed FFA Game Notifications sometimes not turning off properly
  • Fixed a bug where players could join an in-progress game
  • Fixed Personal Scores in Singleplayer not saving.
  • Fixed a bug in War Mode where abilities would grow in size with each use
  • Fixed a bug in War Mode where selecting a tower would not only hide the lingering icon, but also "pause" its remaining timer
  • If you cast Dimensional Rift without hitting any enemies, no icon should appear
  • Fixed builders sinking into the abyss in the middle of Grand City.
  • Fixed Atlantis minimap being offset.
  • Fixed Fastest Clear stat resetting itself.
  • Fixed a bug where if you select the Friends tab in the Leaderboard, then switch to a map where you have a replay, it'd automatically load that entry.

A lot of work goes into making the in-between areas pleasant to look at. Take a look around sometime! Just don't die in the process.

General Balance
  • Diminishing Returns:
    • All Slow & Damage Amp Towers will now have diminishing returns. How this works is, after the first debuff, for each additional unique debuff, all debuffs are 5% less effective.
    • Debuff Effectiveness = 95% ^ (# of Stacks - 1)
  • Default Wave Order has shuffled a bit:
    • Wave 7 is now Fire + Healing
    • Wave 8 is now Water + Bulky
    • Wave 9 is now Light + Cursed
    • Wave 10 is now Earth + Temporal
    • Wave 13 is now Light + Healing
    • Wave 15 is now Earth + Shield
    • Wave 22 is now Nature + Healing
    • Wave 23 is now Earth + Undead
    • Wave 25 is now Light + Bulky
    • Wave 31 is now Light + Shield
    • Wave 32 is now Water + Temporal
  • Tier 2 Singles cost increased from 650 to 675
  • Tier 3 Singles cost increased from 2250 to 2500
  • Tier 4 Singles & Periodic cost increased from 12250 to 15000
  • Cursed attack speed reduction raised from 10% to 15% per stack
    • Duration reduced from 15 to 10 seconds
  • 2-Path maps in Ranked Mode no longer have +3 seconds added to the Wave Timer.
  • Autumn's map layout has been adjusted a bit.

It's almost the same, we just extended things a bit. Oh, and it looks prettier.

Tower Balance
  • Arrow damage reduced from 50 to 45
  • Cannon damage reduced from 60 to 55
  • Darkness damage reduced from 300 / 1800 / 10800 / 108000 to 280 / 1680 / 10080 / 100800

    • Damage buff rescaled from 10% / 20% / 100% to 10% / 30% / 90%
  • Well damage reduced from 500 / 2000 / 8000 to 450 / 1800 / 7200
    • Attack speed buff rescaled from 10% / 20% / 100% to 10% / 30% / 90%
  • Trickery damage reduced from 375 / 1500 / 6000 to 325 / 1300 / 5200
    • Clone damage rescaled from 40% / 80% / 400% to 36% / 108% / 324%

  • Haste reset time increased from 4 to 5 seconds

  • Periodic damage increased from 38000 to 40000
As usual, with any Balance Patch is a Leaderboard Reset. Note this is just for the Score Leaderboards, not Ranked. That won't be reset until the official release.

Things may have gotten just a tad chaotic here...

And with that, we've delivered one of the last "big updates" before official release. Chapter 4 of the campaign will arrive with the official release. There'll still be updates between now and then (Achievements, Cosmetics... a 3rd Co-op Map), but otherwise it'll primarily be bug fixes and quality-of-life updates. In the meantime, enjoy dying to the new maps, Happy New Year, and may 2021 fair better for us all!
