Tesla Force - Habba
We are happy to announce that we've left the Early Access with this update! Both Shelley and Lovecraft are now playable. We've also added three all-new cutscenes to flesh out the story. We've also expanded the inventions available at Wardenclyffe.

We'd like to thank everyone who participated in the Early Access and helped us shape the game to be much better. We couldn't have done it without your valuable input! ːsteamhappyː

As we just previously released the 0.9 patch, the 1.0 is much smaller in scope.

Changelist:
  • [CHARACTERS] Lovecraft is now playable! You can unlock him by completing the quest.
  • [UPGRADES] Four (4) new upgrades added to Wardenclyffe!
  • [CUTSCENES] Added 4 all-new cutscenes to the game! And a menu for rewatching!
  • [PERKS] Duplicate perks are no longer possible to acquire from Wardenclyffe. It was OP!

Hokko Life - Lauren_Team17
Here’s an update from Robert at Wonderscope Games on what he got up to on Hokko Life last month!

Bye bye October 👋

We got a lot done during you, and you gave us some wonderful Autumn weather!

UI Improvements
Continuing from last month I worked on updating more of the UI in the game to the new style, as well as fixing lots of niggling bugs and improving general interactions.

The catch/collect short cutscene got some polish, cleaning up the ui and adding things like blur.

The carpenter store got a lick of paint too. This is where you'll go to unlock new crafting recipes, creation blueprints, paintbrushes etc.

I added interact prompts when you get close to an interactable object, telling you what interactions you can perform.

I updated the placement mode, moving the camera up and giving you a better view when decorating. I also added interact hints to tell you how to control the mode.

Sprinting
A while back I added jumping to the game as a new mechanic for getting around. It coincided with me trying out an stamina/energy system. After playing with jump and the energy stuff in the game, I realised it really didn't fit Hokko, and so removed it.

I decided to add a sprint to the game, this helps you get around a lot quicker, and also gives the player something to do while they're running across levels (I found I was jumping while running around to fill the time, and sprint makes a lot more sense)

You'll now have an energy meter just for sprinting, which will deplete as you sprint and waiting a little while will refill it.

It was a small change, but makes a huge difference to how it feels to get around!

Dialogue System Update
I replaced my system for animating text in dialogue with a better one from the Unity Asset Store (one that I've had my eye on for a while and was on sale recently, hehe)

I hooked this up, and re-jigged my dialogue system to allow for emotes and text highlighting to happen at points in the dialogue text; which wasn't possible with the old system.

With this new system I can add things like camera shake to dialogue too!

New dialogue text and camera shake

Requests
I built upon the request system in the game this month, adding some new requests as well as improving those already there.

The villagers ask you for things every now and then, sometimes they'll ask you to design furniture, and sometimes they'll ask for a specific item, or to deliver something. On top of this I added requests for tidying up the town (removing weeds etc) and requests to decorate either the interior or exterior of a villger's home.

I also extended the design furniture request and added a stage where the player needs to place the item in the villager's home before their task is "done". This was done in combination with adding a rating system to the request, which will look at how much effort was spent on an item and adjust the reward accordingly. If you do a bad job of a piece of furniture, you'll now get a disappointed response, a low reward, and the villager might just throw your creation away!

I had been discussing progression with my design help over at Team 17, and we decided to move some unlocks onto the villagers themselves. I improved on the reward part of requests to allow for a chance that you'll get a "special reward". These special rewards are rare, and they unlock items in either the Farming or Carpenter stores. This way, by helping villagers out, you'll unlock more of the game over time too!

Town Rating
I had also discussed the idea of a "town rating" with Team 17, which would act as a behind-the-scenes way of keeping track of how the player is doing, and a nice way of unlocking villagers based on the player's actions.

The system is simple and assigns points to different actions the player can perform, tied to different areas of the game like fishing, farming, town decoration etc. Potential villagers can now be unlocked based on these points scores, and we can also look at giving advice or tying other parts of the game to this system too if we want to.

Props
Team 17 artists have been continuing their work on items for the game. Adding more items and working through and adding textures to the existing models one by one.

Animations
An ex-colleague, Alex from Polygon Treehouse (the lovely folks behind Röki) has been helping out with animations for the game this month. We got started working on the run and sprint animations, and now he's moved on to the emotes for the game.

Peace emote

Icons
Jonas hopped on the project and has been helping create delightful icons for the game. Adding these to the UI really helps make the game come together, and makes things a bit more cosy too 🥰

So there you have it, all the lovely stuff we got done in October!

Next month I'll be looking at getting all the online stuff working properly, as well as making some more changes to the world map.

Hope you're all enjoying the cosy Autumn days, and keeping safe in these turbulent times.

As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments!
