Blood Bowl 3 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Craig Pearson)

We are almost in the final quarter of Blood Bowl 3’s development. The turn-based American Football and Warhammer mash-up is scheduled to come out next year, but Games Workshop have announced it will be preceded by a closed beta in early 2021. There are going to be several ways into the pre-release party, according to publisher Nacon and developer Cyanide, but neither have specified exactly what form those routes are going to take. Instead, the only way to guarantee access to the closed beta right now is to pre-order the next edition of the board game it’s based on – and it’s a costly way in, to be sure.

The Falconeer - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Sin Vega)

An image of the protagonist and his giant falcon flying near a pirate ship in The Falconeer.

A bit of imagination can go a long way. Shooty games about wandering a somewhat living area of outer space doing odd jobs in between a chain of story missions are their own subgenre, to the point where even the good ones can blur together. There are only so many laser cannons and thrusters and made-up space minerals I can keep track of, y’know?

The Falconeer is, broadly speaking, one of those games, but in a much more novel and colourful setting. Instead of space, you fly over a vast ocean. Instead of ships, you ride a giant falcon, and fight flying dinosaurs, semi-mechanical (I think?) insects, and huge undulating serpents covered with gun banks. Instead of lasers, you fly into storms to charge up your lightning guns. Its world is so fresh that I’ve found myself rating it above games that, on reflection, have a lot more in them. It’s just now occurred to me that there isn’t any trading in it, for one thing.

What it loses in capital-F features it gains in originality and atmosphere. Whether that’s enough for you will vary.

Best Sniper in Call Of Duty: Cold War

Sniper Rifles utterly dominated the Beta events of Call Of Duty: Cold War thanks to their extremely high quick-scoping potential and the fact that aim punch in Cold War doesn’t affect your accuracy like in other Call Of Duty games. Since then, the class as a whole has been nerfed somewhat – but are they still dominant?

Below we’ll walk you through each Sniper Rifle in turn from best to worst, and explain what we think is the best Sniper in Cold War right now.

A Cinnasnail from Bugsnax recreated with an actual cinnamon bun.

Weird critter-hunting game, Bugsnax, made me uncomfortably hungry when I played it for the first time over the weekend. Watching the little Bungers (they’re kinda like burger beetles) waddle around charging at splodges of ketchup made me go “awww”, and then immediately order a McDonald’s delivery. Thankfully, I will no longer need to default to takeaways to serve these strange cravings, because video game food-maker, Victoria Rosenthal, has come up with a bunch of Bugsnax recipes.

Heads up, your yearly package of guns and gimmickry has been incoming ever since we discovered its name from that most reliable of informants: a Doritos packet. As ever, Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will see you wordlessly slaying any number of Iranians, Turks, Vietnamese, Russians, Germans, Cubans, all in the name of Uncle Sam and, this time, under the approving, wrinkled eyes of Ronald Reagan. The story is set in 1981 and it does not take a revisionist pen to history so much as it wraps a cloth bag over history’s head and hoses it down against a chainlink fence. It is incoherent numbskullery, tasking you with avoiding nuclear war, while at the same time insisting that gunning down the entire staff of Moscow’s KGB headquarters will not be interpreted as an act of war in itself. Plausible deniability is at the heart of what we do, argues one of the idiot spooks on your squad. But within the stupidity of this story hides an insidious and intractable message about the necessity of doing wrong.

Paratopic - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Craig Pearson)

Five years ago, stealth sim Tangiers was due out in November 2015. But that never happened. Since then, the Kickstarted project has crouched in the shadows, forgotten by most, waiting to reveal itself once again. After half a decade of development hell, work on the game has finally resumed, all thanks to glitchy horror short Paratopic.
