Graphics card deals

With the launch of Nvidia’s [cms-block] and the imminent arrival of AMD’s [cms-block] GPUs on the horizon, now is not a great time to be buying a new graphics card. Prices for older cards haven’t fallen as low as you might expect given they’re about to be replaced by something newer and shinier, and many graphics cards simply aren’t worth considering any more due to the new ones being so much faster for the same kind of price.

Still, if you simply cannot wait and are in desperate need of a new graphics card, we’re here to help. Below, you’ll find a list of all the cheapest graphics card deals around right now so you can see exactly how they stack up against the competition. I’ll also tell you exactly what each card is capable of when it comes to gaming performance, and how much prices have changed week-on-week.

An image of the RTX 3090.

The RTX 3090 is almost here. Dubbed the “BFGPU” of the new [cms-block] family (that’s a reference to Doom’s BFG, in case you’re wondering), the RTX 3090 is set to be the world’s fastest graphics card when it launches this Thursday, September 24th, thanks to its ability to play and capture games in 8K – a feat which sounds impressive until you realise that the number of 8K displays you can actually buy at the moment is practically zero. Still, if you’re dead set on having the best graphics card around for the foreseeable future, I’ve gathered together everything you need to know about the RTX 3090, including its specs, price, where you can buy one, and what time it goes on sale.

Pendragon: Narrative Tactics - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice Bell)

A screenshot from Pendragon showing Lancelot, a knight with a shoulder length blonde bob, about to attack a wolf. Lancelot's sword is raised, and the wolf is showing its teeth

It’s a relief to know that some life-or-death battles where the fate of the nation is in the balance can be attempted a near infinite number of times. A complete cycle of Inkle’s turn-based strategy meets Arthurian storytelling, Pendragon, can be wrapped up pretty sharpish if you’re on the lowest difficulty and aren’t getting too lost on the map. From the south coast of Wales to the final battle between King Arthur and Mordred at Camlann in about 45 minutes. Then, lunch.

But this is a feature, not a bug. Pendragon is designed to be replayed many times, as many different Arthurian heroes. Indeed, I would have thrown myself back into it a lot less if it took much longer to complete my noble quest. Not that I complete it often, in the strictest sense of the word. Like, yes, I may get to Camlann, but Mordred usually beasts me because Pendragon is pretty hard.

Outland

doesn’t have a unique bone in its red and blue body. You can reach new areas in the world after unlocking abilities, like Metroid; you navigate the environment with the agility of the Prince Of Persia; and you take out baddies by changing the colour of your character, like Ikaruga. Its that last one that makes Outland a great 2D action-platformer, rather than just a good one, though.

Microsoft are buying Bethesda

, or rather their parent company ZeniMax Media. Like a nesting doll, Bethesda themselves are the parents of yet other game studios that Microsoft will also own. What of, say, Id Software? One of Id’s co-founders John Carmack reckons that the Bethesda buyout is a good thing. He says that the new Microsoft ownership could allow him to “reengage” with his old work.

These ghouls certainly don’t need any more sun, but perhaps your Vault 111 escapee could use a bit of heat to even out those dweller tan lines. Biggo modding project Fallout Miami recently put out a new trailer for their “DLC-sized” addition to Fallout 4 showing some of the toasty new locales you’ll be able to explore when it launches.

As with most other physical conventions this year, BlizzCon 2020 is cancelled due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. Blizzard said that they wanted to take the con online but didn’t think they’d be able to squeeze it into this calendar year. They were right on that front, but you won’t be waiting until next November for the con to return. Honorary BlizzCon 2020 will now officially take place in February 2021, they’ve announced.

A photo showing the RTX 3080 on its side

Nvidia have apologised for last week’s “frustrating” [cms-block] launch, stating that demand for their new flagship GPU was “overwhelming” and that “we were not prepared for this level [of enthusiasm], nor were our partners.” The apology was posted on their GeForce blog earlier today, answering community questions such as what the overall RTX 3080 stock situation is like at the moment, and why their own ‘Notify Me’ emails were so slow to being sent out. Here’s what they have to say about it.
