NEO AQUARIUM - The King of Crustaceans - - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Nate Crowley)

Masafumi Onuki, the programmer behind Japanese indie studio Calappa Games (a.k.a Nussoft), is a man who knows what he likes. He likes crabs. All three of his games to date have gone in heavy on crustaceans: there was Neo Aquarium with its intense sci-fi crab brawling, then party-based third person fighting game Ace Of Seafood (which admittedly also featured fish), and then this year’s Fight Crab, which is a visual novel about music theory. Only joking, it’s a game where crabs beat the stuffing out of each other.

I had mixed feelings about Fight Crab, in that I thought the concept was both brilliant and perfectly executed, but also that it was a complete nightmare to play, giving me motion sickness to the point where I barked oats onto a tree. I wouldn’t want to change anything about it, but it’s still not something I’d actually like to play a whole bunch. Still, if there’s one thing my opinions are unambiguous on, it’s crabs. And since I could sense a fellow aficionado in Onuki-san, I figured I’d get in touch with him for a chat about the old snipple-snapple. I’m glad I did; it was one of the most pleasant interviews I’ve ever conducted. Here it is.

Losing the ability to keep developing Unreal Engine for Mac and iOS could really harm both Epic Games and the developers who rely on them, Microsoft have said in a legal statement supporting Epic. The Unreal lords are trying to get a court to stop Apple from terminating their developer accounts, which is due to happen on Friday unless their lawyers deliver a victory royale. It’s one messy consequence of Epic’s legal battle against Apple and Google over app store fees, which sure has escalated since starting with Fortnite microtransactions.

“Expect nothing less than you got with The Witcher 3,” CD Projekt Red said in a hidden message from their 2018 Cyberpunk 2077 trailer. There have been a lot of sleeps since then—more than two years worth—so you’ll be forgiven for forgetting. CDPR have reminded fans this weekend that yes, they are in fact planning to offer free DLCs for their biggo cyberpunk playground RPG.

We’re still a week away from Nvidia’s RTX 3000 graphics cards announcement on September 1st, but ever since they unveiled their new Ampere GPU architecture back in May, the internet has been rife with rumours about the release date, specs and price of Nvidia’s upcoming GPUs. To help you prepare for Nvidia’s hotly anticipated RTX 3080, RTX 3080 Ti and maybe even RTX 3090 reveal, I’ve gathered up all the information I can find about Nvidia’s Ampere GPUs to try and make sense of all the online gossip.

Nvidia RTX 3080 render by JDSP5

There’s just one week to go until Nvidia ends their Ultimate Countdown campaign in the run-up to the launch of their next-gen [cms-block] cards, but it would appear that the top graphics card in their new RTX 3000 family, the supposed RTX 3090, has already been snapped in the wild – and it’s positively monstrous to boot.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Rocksteady Studios, the creators the Batman: Arkham games and the newly-announced Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, on Friday night issued a response to the week’s reports of sexual harrassment and discrimination. These allegations stemmed from a 2018 letter of complaint written to management by most of their female employees, one of whom felt the company hadn’t done enough since then and shared the letter with a newspaper. Rocksteady say they investigated all formal complaints and disciplined or terminated some staff back then, and now have called in a independent third-party to help investigate any potential further complaints.

A screenshot of a feasting hall in an ultra-modded version of Skryim. It has god rays and everything looks loads better than normal Skyrim

Nowadays, I’m a Skyrim watcher and not a Skyrim doer. I used to be a doer, but that involved more than just installing the game. I’d start modding, and I wouldn’t stop. Couldn’t stop. I’d spend more time looking for lore appropriate coin distribution than shouting at dragons. Eventually, something would break, and I’d uninstall it, promising that I wouldn’t fall into that hole again.

It’s been a long struggle, but when I stumbled upon YouTube compilations of heavily-modded Elder Scrolls, I finally broke the curse. Some brave souls do the hard work for me, turning the nine-year-old RPG (or four-year-old remaster, or two-year-old VR remake) into PC melting 4K thirst traps. I don’t have time for that. Nor the PC. I hope you’re ready for a huge animatronic horror-fest, because Five Nights At Freddy’s creator Scott Cawthon has launched a project to help fund a bunch of the games made by fans inspired by the series. The Fazbear Fanverse Initiative will invest in some of the more popular fan games that have appeared over the years, including a remake of the first FNAF.

“There have been some great fanmade spinoff universes created in this community, and I want to see them keep going,” Cawthon says.
