The latest show to hit Fortnite‘s Party Island isn’t a blow-out concert or Chris Nolan flick. Somehow, it’s weirder. Hop in front of Fortnite’s big telly right now and you’ll find a call to “#FreeFortnite” from the supposed tyranny of tech giant Apple, who today removed the battle royale from the App Store for sidestepping its revenue policies. Now, Epic are taking Apple to court – and they’ve got an in-game ad campaign to make sure public perception is on their side.

Metro Exodus - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Natalie Clayton)

There’s a new conductor on the Metro: Exodus train. Or driver, even. Captain? I might not know how trains work, but I can tell you that Metro developers 4A Games have just been picked up by Embracer Group for around $80 million (roughly £61 million), and are floating plans to put that partnership to work on a multiplayer take on the post-apocalyptic Muscovite.

Parkasaurus - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Natalie Clayton)

One day, someone is going to build a genetically-engineered dinosaur theme park that doesn’t turn its guests into lunch. Parkasaurus may not quite escape from the murder, but I reckon it’s easier to be eaten by a T-Rex when it’s wearing a funny hat. Emerging from the labs of early access, Washbear’s colourful dino tycoon opened the gates to a full release today, with 20% off tickets for early visitors.

Fortnite

‘s V-Bucks may have dropped 20% against the dollar, but economists need not fret. Unlike the real world, Epic’s murder island isn’t suffering an economic downturn. Instead, the blockbuster battle royale has decided to permanently cut the price of its virtual currency to spite tech giants Apple and Google, in an app store feud that’s quietly benefiting those of us who prefer to parachute into Fortnite on PC.

A screenshot of a piece of game art of a Roman centurion in full armour, holding his sword and looking all grim and war sweaty. There is a massive battle happening behind him.

Ave, citizens! Rome wasn’t build in a day, but this podcast was built in a few hours, so you tell me which is better? This week, we’re doing a Romans special. We talk about the games Romans appear in, the way they’re portrayed, and the difference between Romans on console vs on PC. Also we talk a lot about the Pope, and ask the important question: what does a wolf’s milk taste like?

The US continues to get some pretty great gaming laptop deals this week, with two new entries from Newegg, making it a great time to pick up a powerful gaming laptop for under £1000 / $1000. Dead by Daylight - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Imogen Beckhelling)

August is a weird month. It can have the hottest days of the year, while simultaneously starting to give everyone odd autumnal vibes. I’m the sort of person that gets to August and says “hm, yes, Halloween is soon”. So, what better game for fine summer’s day than Dead By Daylight? Behaviour Interactive’s 1v4 horror game added cross-platform multiplayer today, so now PC and console peeps will be able to join together for murderous shenanigans.

There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice Bell)

A screenshot from There Is No Game of a deliberately generic fantasy hero character in a blue tunic. He is holding up a chest aloft over his head. Text above the chest says LOOTBOX in bright pink-and-green letters and the hero looks very excited

You know that joke from The Simpsons, where the kids find out that cows don’t look like cows on film so you have to use horses, and for horses you have to “tape a bunch of cats together“? When I was playing There Is No Game I kept thinking about that joke. “How do you make an original point and click puzzle adventure? Eh, usually we just tape a bunch of other games together.”

I am being facetious. There Is No Game is smart and funny and surprising, but the thing is that it’s very much “a video gamer’s video game”, if you will. I think maybe it is a small bit too much that. (Note: spoilers follow, I suppose, as this is arguably one of those “if you explain it, it’s not as fun” games).
