Once again, no weekly update while I’m focused on the full-gamepad support, but a little post about some of my sources of inspiration.
Games
When thinking about farming RPGs, the Harvest Moon (1996) series and Stardew Valley (2016) inevitably come to mind. But for older gamers, there are even earlier memories of RPGs that included some agriculture and crafting. For me, it was Ultima VII (1992). That is probably the first RPG game where most objects could be moved or interacted with, and the player was free to explore a huge world filled with non-linear adventures.
The world was so realistic that you could decide—instead of being an adventurer—to harvest wheat, mill it, put the flour on a table, add water (or beer!) to make dough, and put it in an oven to make bread that you could consume or sell. It would quickly become boring, but there was a special feeling associated with letting your weapons aside and just craft for a while.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOfzind4xCA Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley are definitely the main source of inspiration for WoMen in Science, though. Graveyard Keeper (2018), the dark humorous farm-sim game where you manage a cemetery, is where our point system comes from.
Another—maybe more surprising—source of inspiration is Baldur’s Gate 2 (2000). In the dialogues with the imp Cespenar, the game will scan your inventory and branch to funny comments depending on the objects you carry.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-RhrMlnklw I implemented a similar system when you bring an artifact to Carl Von Linné in the museum, so that he will not just explain the artifacts but also make comments on other items. In the future I’d like to build on this system, and create something like a small database of all that happens in the world, so that NPCs can react to it in surprising ways.
My own life
I think that it’s important to put a little part of yourself in what you create. I was always interested in agriculture and biotechnology, and that was actually my first career choice, before I went into software development. I played with hydroponic and aeroponic setups, and a few other elements that you will find in game in real life. In fact, the game’s university is based on Gembloux Agro-Bio-Tech, in Belgium, where I was a (far too unreliable) student for a time.
“Blooming Chestnuts”, the title of the summer soundtrack, is inspired by that time. The teachers would tell students that they need to start studying for the finals before the chestnut trees are blooming. Once you see the flowers, it is too late, you failed already, they said. The funny thing was that for the untrained botanists we were trying to be, the blooming happened quite suddenly, triggering the unprepared into a panic state.
The winter theme, named “Nelligan’s garden of frost”, is a reference to my emigration from Belgium to the province of Quebec (Canada), 20 years ago. One of Émile Nelligan’s most well-known poem is “Soir d’hiver”, where he describes his window being a “garden of frost”. He’s not talking about the Canadian winter though, but about his own vulnerability.
I hope that this little incursion into my world was not too boring! There are of course many more things that I find inspiring. So many in fact, that I have a notebook where I have been writing every idea that comes to mind since the beginning of this project, and that will inspire future updates.
We are aware of the May 29 Steam access issues and are working on a solution. We apologize for the inconvenience. We will inform you once we have a solution.
Early Access Patch 007: The New Perspective Patch – 29th May 2020
Camera Controls Camera tilt is now added in, allowing players to finally zoom, rotate and tilt the camera. Players should have much better control over the camera than two weeks ago. Tilt sensitivity is another option added to the settings. You can now go to Satellite View while aiming.

Music now stops after the game ends. Switching between facility and an AMP no longer bricks shooting. AI trains are shooting at the center of the map when they had no targets to aim at, this has now been fixed.
The Project Lead on Rough Justice: '84, Jeremiah Costello, AKA "Jezza" explains the current state of development in this handy devlog.
WE HAVE MOVEMENT!
Gotta level here, getting the agents to follow prescribed routes has been a bit tricky for us. To complicate matters, we wanted to enable some form of randomization, so that the same route would not always be taken, but thankfully we scrubbed that idea. It's a prototype after all, right?
MAP OVERVIEW
Bear in mind that Rough Justice is still in the early stages of development, but it was important to implement the map, even at this stage. Having a bird's eye view of the entire city, and being able to see your agents traveling to their various assignments is key when trying to get an overview.
Our discord server is alive! You can join the conversation and hang out with other fans on the discord server and talk directly to us regarding your thoughts and ideas about Rough Justice.
WRAP UP
That about does it for this update. We're planning on pushing these posts every two weeks, at least until we reach our next milestone. This is our THIRD update EVAH. We doin' this right?
Given this time in the month you can likely guess that there is no game update from us for May. We needed to give ourselves the time to focus and prepare for future work on the game. This includes the feedback we received from you all based on the last update as well. We hope you understand and will bear with us just a little longer!
That said, if you’ve been following our channels, you may have read Calle’s latest post on the Östertör-net BBS where he said that he was going to write a letter to the editor of Dagstidningen, and sure enough, he did! And we got our hands on it early:
“Stop FOA, Save Östertörn!
Very strange things are happening right now in Östertörn and I want to claim that it's in direct connection with the Försvarets Forskningsanstalt placed here. Wouldn't you agree with me when I say that things haven’t been usual lately? We've definitely got increased radiation here in Östertörn and I suspect that it has something to do with that laboratory "FOA35" and one of their experiments. Could they have alien technology there or plain and simple a real living alien?! It’s something out of this world for sure, I'm certain of it! They are after us! As usual we know that they won't give up anything, so I want to warn you what’s in the making and that we together claim our right to truth from the government.
Enough is enough!
-Calle”
Keep an eye out for other bits of information in the coming weeks as we head into summer. Until next time, stay safe out there!

Community Announcements - Ignasis (Community Team)
Greetings, Exiles of the Testlive lands!
We’re releasing the first revision for our next update, continuing our work with getting the Avatar system ready for prime time.
We are also continuing our work towards balancing the game, this time focusing on PVE content and boss encounters, substantially reducing the health pool of all raid, group and boss monsters. This brings the time to kill to similar values previous to the latest patch, and is one more step in our journey to re-balance content in the game. We’ll bring further balancing to other aspects of the game in future revisions of this patch.
Finally, we’ve bundled in some fixes for visual imperfections present in pieces from the Architects of Argos pack, and removed Denuvo from the game.
Thanks again for your ongoing feedback and support. Stay safe!
Please remember that updates can mess with your installed mods. We suggest taking a backup of your current database before updating to any new patch if you have mods installed.
Currently Known Issues
Please remember that this is a Work in Progress build of the game. As such many features might not work as intended, be incomplete, or present issues. Please let us know of any issues you found while testing by following these steps.
Added a number of optimizations for server code and server logs.
Added a number of optimization and database maintenance features. This may decrease the size of database files.
Fixed a number of crashing issues.
Removed Denuvo from the game.
Fixed alignment issues with Argossean Vaulted ceilings.
Fixed collision issues with Argossean beds.
Fixed an issue where thralls would not damage other thralls with ranged attacks.
Fixed an issue where players could get stuck inside a rhino’s mesh.
Reduced the HP for world bosses, dungeon bosses and group content bosses by an average of 35-40%. This brings the TTK of this PVE content to similar values previous to the last patch.
Players are now vulnerable to projectiles while summoning an avatar.
Avatar summoning time has been increased to 60 seconds (from 20 seconds).
Avatars of the same kind can’t be summoned at the same time by different players.
Reduced health regeneration for critters returning to their original spot after having reached their maximum leashing distance.
Fixed more instances where nameplates wouldn’t be visible to the player.
Separate TestLive Product on Steam
We heard your input regarding the inconvenience with having to switch back and forth between the main game and our TestLive servers. To make it easier for you and because we really value your testing and feedback, we added a separate product for the TestLive server on Steam.
If you own Conan Exiles on Steam, you should now see a separate Product called “Conan Exiles - Testlive Client” in your library which gives you the option to install an additional instance of the game specifically for the TestLive servers. Please be aware that this will prompt you for a full additional installation.
We are aware that not everyone wants install or has space for two full installations. For those of you who don’t want to play through the additional TestLive Client, you can still access the TestLive servers through our old method.
We just launch a prologue version of the game for free on Steam. You can just follow this link and try the beginning of this adventure. Next month, we’ll release it as well for Nintendo Switch. This is completely free, for everyone, and you can stream it and share it with whoever you want. The demo is just the tutorial so you know how to play.
By the way, another thing: Summer in Mara will come out for Nintendo Switch, PC & Mac on June 16th. That’s right, we have an official release date! It’s been a long, long way and we’re so sorry for all the delays and changes, but we’ve done it thanks to you and now we’re just three weeks away from the release!
One last thing.
Caro is one of our artists. You can see her amazing 2D art as the portraits of the characters from the game, among many other things. Now, Caro is making a crowdfunding on her own!
Crepanquine is a fantasy, horror and drama comic inspired in the art of the famous animated Japanese films such as Perfect Blue and Howl's Moving Castle. It tells the story of the legendary Curse, a disease that transforms the index finger of its victims into parasitic magic wands. Our protagonists, the apathetic Rino and the lighthearted Xental will try to cure their loved ones of the disease. However, unbeknownst to them, higher forces will hinder their progress as they have a completely different purpose for the people living in Crepanquine.
If you have never heard about Crepanquine, don't worry! They also have a reward with an omnibus so you would not miss a thing about this story!
