Lynne - ebihime
Hi everyone,

I thought I'd let you know I have uploaded the store page of a new upcoming VN, nothing & nowhere. It isn't finished quite yet, but I think it should be released relatively soon (maybe at the end of this month).

nothing & nowhere is related to Lynne, so if you enjoyed Lynne, you might want to keep an eye on it.

Nira - BaselineGames
This is a post from my blog. Check out the full post including images and videos on my website: http://baselinegames.com/blog/

April was a special month. A ton of new features and fixes were implemented based on community feedback, a brand new launch trailer was dropped and most importantly; Nira launched in Steam Early Access!

I’m very happy with how the game is performing so far, as the game has a psotivie rating on Steam (80% positive) and I’ve received a ton of positive comments via social media. I’m happy to say it’s definitely performing well enough for me to keep updating Nira for some time to come. So far I’ve pushed a new patch full of community feedback and fixes every single day since launch. I’d like to thank everyone who reported bugs and issues, suggested new features and helped test and improve the game! Thanks to you I can make Nira the best possible version it can be.

This blogpost is dedicated to the changes made with help of the community.

Hands-Free
Right on launch day a first patch was pushed in which the player character no longer needs an item to gather and interact. This is very helpful when in a situation without tools, and also prevents players from accidentally locking themselves up in a home-made prison without any tools to break free.

Item names
Due to the minimalistic look of Nira, it can sometimes be hard to see which items your holding or finding. This becomes increasingly annoying when a totem sends you out on a quest to go find an item of which you have no idea what it looks like. You can now hover your mouse over items in the world or in (chest) inventories to view their names.

Additionally, an item log was introduced showing all items that are gathered or found in the bottom left of the screen. This way you’ll never have to wonder what the pixely circle thingy was that you just picked up!

Map Generator
To make the maps a bit more interesting, the map generator was tweaked to form smaller islands with water inbetween. This means resources are a bit more limited too, forcing players to find an explore new islands when you run out of resources.

To make sure exploring doesn’t become a chore, you now start out with a free boat (no problem). The swimming time was also increased and in case you really get yourself stuck on an island with no boat, you can now also ride animals without a saddle (and those good bois swim fast!)

Additionally, you now start out right next to a totem. You can still build totems from the crafting menu and since you only start with a wooden one you’ll definitely have to build better ones along the way. However, this default wooden totem will give a little more objective to new players, hopefully easing them into the game a little smoother.

Click here to check out some screenshots of what the new map generator produces!

Performance
Lastly I need to address performance issues. Nira might look simple and minimalistic, but the world is made out of thousands of blocks which are procedurally generated as you walk around. It’s quite a challenge to smoothly load thousands of blocks on screen and save everything off screen at any given time.

Although for most people the game seems to be running smoothly, I am also getting some reports from people experiencing lag. I’ve addressed this on day one, urging people to turn down the graphics settings, and have since then made multiple attempts to improve performance. In a performance patch that was launched a couple of days after release, a crucial memory leak was fixed and general performance was increased. On top of that a new graphics setting was introduced, allowing you to turn off more animations to increase performance. During Early Access I’ll constantly be working on optimizations and new graphical settings to make the game run better.

To conclude
Last month’s goal was to launch Nira, and I think we can safely say that worked out well. I’m very happy with the public reception of the game and it’s definitely performing well enough for me to maintain Nira over the coming time. For next month I would like to set a goal to first fix the major issues people are reporting, and from there work on bigger – more interesting – patches, instead of constant small fixes. I would love to have at least one bigger patch live before next months blog.

And if you have any feedback, make sure to join the Discord and let me know!

That’s it for April! Don’t forget to check out Nira on Steam if you haven’t already and if you really don’t want to miss a thing, make sure to follow me on Twitter or Instagram. Thanks for reading, and till next month!

Flotsam - Dave
Ahoy drifters!

The last weeks we've taken the time to rework a lot of the behind-the-scenes project code and optimize the art assets even more. While you won't immediately see a change from this, it does mean that it will be easier to track down bugs and implement fixes for us in the long run.
The art optimization should reduce the memory impact and improve the game performance slightly.
Any help tracking down issues that this rework might cause is really appreciated.

When bugs occur, provide as much information as possible to help us resolve these faster!Read here how to submit and track the current bugs in the game.

Additionally we've added some build improvements as well. Snapping to walkways is now disabled and constructions show their boundaries when placing them for easier placement. A new type of wooden walkway is now also availabe.

This patch is still in development, but can be tested on the experimental branch to give feedback.

This is how you can enable the experimental branch of Flotsam. This will only work when you're not in a game:
1. Open Steam Library
2. Right click Flotsam
3. Select Properties
4. Go to tab 'Betas' at the top.
5. Select 'Experimental' in the drop-down.

Enjoy the new update!

Change Notes
We've internally changed the way projects (IE Salvaging a building, using a producer, etc) are handled. This may come with a few bugfixes, but it will allow us to fix things faster in the future. While it may not have a direct effect right away, it will stabilize the game a lot more in the long run.

General
  • Constructions will now display their boundary with a dotted line when placing a new building.

Gameplay
  • Split walkways into wood & plastic walkways.

Visuals
  • Updated the visuals of walkway segment to reflect their required resource.
  • Updated wood walkway visual to be more readable.

Performance
  • Decreased material count on walkways, increasing performance.

Fixes
  • Fixed issue where constructions would often snap to pontons.
  • Fixed issue where 2 walkways could not be placed directly opposed to each other.
  • Fixed issue where going back to the main menu and starting a new game could cause selection outlines to stop working.
