The first time I throw down a cannister of GROB, I'm not entirely sure what it is. As it explodes into a satisfying puddle of goo, the exotic creatures around me - my scanner tells me they're Pufferbirds and they "like, love me": it's already reciprocal - screech a joyful, if alien, screech and waddle straight to it. Awed, I waddle right after them.

Moments later, their little bodies start contorting and their cheerful chirps fade. With dawning horror, I realise I've mindlessly thrown down this unspecified foodstuff without knowing anything about it - even though I'm playing a game with the word "savage" baked right into the title - noticing for the first time it's labelled "bait" in my inventory. It's too late for recriminations, though, isn't it? These poor creatures are jitter-bugging their final death throes. I'll be branded a Pufferbird Poisoner, I think. The Avicide Assassin. Spare me no leniency, I'll wail, as they drag me from the dock. Don't let me-

The convulsion ends in an obnoxiously noisy fart and a cloud of blue atoms spills out from beneath the Pufferbird's backside. Its neighbour swiftly follows it up with a clamorous bottom-burp of its own. There's another trouser toot from the corner of the cave - I hadn't even spotted that one - and the faint luminosity of untapped atoms now presses softly against the dark walls of the cavern. I step cautiously towards them, still wary of upsetting the fowl, and gather my first resource - carbon - of the game.

As we gear up for the second season of Fortnite Chapter 2, it seems Epic Games, the creators of the world's biggest game, Fortnite, has dropped a little tease as to what the theme of the battle royale's next crossover event will be: Birds of Prey.

Warner Bros. recently tweeted a video of the upcoming movie's cast. So far, so what, right? However, it's the tweets that followed that most pique our interest.

In response to the video, the official Fortnite Twitter account replied with a simple: "See you soon Harley!", to which Warner Bros. sent back "Can't Wait" with the emoji of a lipstick kiss. Hmmm.

Mass Effect 2's final location - the Collector Base sat beyond its Omega-4 Relay - sits on screen from the moment you first fire up the game. In the distance, burnt debris circles a black hole's accretion disc: a graveyard of spaceship wrecks slowly being drawn toward their final deaths. It's an ominous sight - and a signpost to where you will also be drawn, pulled towards this place just as inevitably for the game's beautifully designed final moments - its Suicide Mission.

A decade on from Mass Effect 2's release, its finale stands up as some of BioWare's best ever work - and while the game's follow-up certainly competed in its emotional stakes, the Suicide Mission remains unparalleled in terms of its labyrinthine choice complexity. Not that much of this is visible to the player, of course. The best thing about the Suicide Mission is you can go into it blind, hoping you've done everything you can to protect your ship and crew - and still feel a gnawing doubt not everyone will make it out alive. But while this opaqueness makes for a nailbiting ride, it also hides some of BioWare's best decision-made gameplay, as choices here and from throughout your path through the rest of the game converge. It's why this mission fascinates me - long before I saw flowcharts being made to expose its inner workings.

Mass Effect 2 is a game about assembling your crew and earning their trust in readiness for this final mission. And what a crew - a rogues' gallery of aliens, former enemies and thinly-forged alliances, which makes for the trilogy's largest and most diverse cast. As the mission begins, it's a thrill to see this family you have spent dozens of hours with come together as the Normandy is plunged into danger - and as you realise any one of them can bite it.

Want to see Haohmaru versus Mitsurugi in Soulcalibur 6? Of course you do.

Samurai Shodown star Haohmaru is the second of four planned DLC characters that form Soulcalibur 6's second season, and in the trailer below we see him go up against Soulcalibur samurai Mitsurugi. Is the game big enough for the both of them?

There's plenty of big ticket sword swiping, as you'd expect, and we're treated to flashy moves from the guest character. Sparks certainly fly.

Mortal Kombat 11

The Joker will soon be available to download and play in Mortal Kombat 11, but due to the character already being available to fight in-game and through the magic of early access granted to YouTubers, there's a lot about the way the DC supervillain works already out there.

We also know a lot about what Joker says in Mortal Kombat 11, and there are loads of Easter eggs, film references and cool nods this way and that for fans to find and enjoy.

But one exchange in particular sounds like a clear tease for the next fighting game from developer NetherRealm - despite the boss of NetherRealm saying otherwise.

A US court has ruled that being muted in a video game does not violate your human rights.

A Runescape player sued UK developer Jagex after he was muted in-game, claiming Jagex and its Chinese owners violated his right to free speech.

Jagex is able to perform "account mutes", which prevents players from chatting normally in Runescape or post on its forums, while still letting people play the game itself. "Mutes can be avoided by following the RuneScape rules and Terms and Conditions and are associated to the Jagex account, so will be active in all products for that account," reads the Runescape website.

EA Sports is facing a backlash from FIFA 20 players over its handling of a glitch that saw thousands of players obtain a coveted FIFA Ultimate Team card for a fraction of the intended price.

The card in question was the 88-rated Player of the Month Wissam Ben Yedder, a much better version of the Monaco striker's standard card with impressive statistics.

EA Sports made PotM Ben Yedder the reward for the recently uploaded Ligue 1 Player of the Month Squad Building Challenge (SBC). This particular SBC required the exchange of five separate squads to complete, each with different requirements revolving around the likes of nationality, team rating and chemistry.

We're used to seeing people interview video game developers on camera. Hundreds are pumped out of E3 every year. This one, though, is a little different.

A BBC reporter travelled to Ubisoft's Toronto studio to interview the chief developer of Watch Dogs: Legion, but rather than sit down with him in a coffee shop, a boardroom or a hotel lobby, he interviewed him inside the game.

BBC Click's Marc Cieslak went through the motion capture process so Ubisoft could recreate him inside Watch Dogs: Legion - and did the same for creative director Clint Hocking - and then created the scene at virtual Piccadilly Circus.

Rocket League®

Psyonix has decided to end support for the Mac and Linux versions of Rocket League, saying both platforms combined represent a tiny percentage of its active player base.

After a final patch in March, online functionality will be deactivated for the macOS and Linux versions of the game, which means Mac and Linux players won't be able to play online multiplayer or access the in-game store. Offline features including local matches and splitscreen play will still be accessible.

In a post on the Rocket League subreddit, Psyonix community chief Devin Connors said the company couldn't justify the time and resources it would take to keep the game updated on Mac and Linux after it updates its Windows version from 32-bit to 64-bit, and to DirectX 11 from DirectX 9 later this year.
