Abandon Ship - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Jay Castello)

The wind has caught the sails of naval FTL-like Abandon Ship, moving it out of early access and into its 1.0 release. I never thought seafaring was particularly safe, but I wasn t quite expecting the dangers in this trailer. Fighting other ships, sure. I ll even take a horrible kraken creature. But volcanoes? Spiders descending from nowhere? That just seems unfair.

Orange Season - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Jay Castello)

Screenshot Saturday! A day for game developers to give us all a look at what they re working on. And considering the time of year, a surprisingly unspooky one, but we ll do our best to find scares where we can get them. This week: somewhere to hide from the rain, a mysterious plane crash, and a nice dip in the hot springs.

Lakeview Valley - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Jay Castello)

If you go down in the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise. Murder. The surprise is murder, at least if you re in the woods of Lakeview Valley. Although it might not be much of a surprise, given the game describes itself as a murder RPG, and you might just be the one offing people. Take a look at the dangers lurking in the woods, and the potential for a nice spot of fishing, in the trailer below.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Matt Cox)

Sundays are for (indoor) seaside board games. Brighton, you are good. Here’s the best writing about videogames from the past week.

For Gamasutra, Wilmot’s Warehouse co-creator Richard Hogg wrote up an insightful and introspective analysis of his game. It’s a deep and wide-ranging look at both how it came to be and why people like it so much, and him quoting Nate’s review is just the icing on the cake-like dessert object.

If you’ve not been following PC games goings-on across the week, catch up on some of the big stories quick in our noncomprehensive Weekly News Digest. I’ve slipped in a few things we haven’t already posted about, and do also read The Updates Update for some of the week’s notable patches and updates.

In this week’s news, studies talked pleasing common sense about loot boxes and ‘gaming disorder’, Fallout 76 launched a paid premium membership, and Ubisoft and Epic called in their lawmen to fight hackers and leakers.

Dear Esther - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Jay Castello)

BBC Radio 3 are getting stuck in to the world of video game music beginning today, with composer Jessica Curry (whose work you ll hear in Dear Esther and Everybody s Gone To The Rapture) beginning her new show Sound Of Gaming. It s good listening, particularly if you, like me, can t stand to have lyrics on while putting words to paper (or internet) lest it become a tangled mess.

In all the hubbub of the week, you might’ve missed some of the patches and updates rolled out to games. Presenting the Weekly Updates Update, a noncomprehensive roundup of new maps and characters and balance tweaks and fixes and such which caught my eye over the week – including a few we haven’t posted about.

This week, I swear it’s not just Halloween events. There are many Halloween events, that is true. But other patches too, bringing everything from The Long Dark’s next story episode to multiple frying pans.

CARRION - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Jay Castello)

Since I first saw a gif of the squishy guts monster of Carrion I haven t been able to decide whether its movement is nauseating or beautiful. Playing its free demo, which is available now through next Saturday, November 2nd, has neither settled my stomach nor my appreciation for its aesthetics. I think this is a good thing.

WWE 2K20 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Jay Castello)

Many people, including myself, have only been clued into WWE 2K20 s existence because of some wonderfully gif-able glitches that have been whizzing around the internet like a character model caught in the rapidly-twanging arena ropes. But there are those who actually wanted to play the game as it was intended, and developers Visual Concepts have taken to Twitter to say that they re aware of the issues and will be patching them when they can. Video game development: it s difficult.

Monster Hunter: World - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dave Irwin)

We now know when Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will be coming to PC and I’ll be honest, it’s a little earlier than I was expecting it to be. A post-holiday treat if you will, to tie us over until more big releases grace our screens. Here’s everything you need to know about Monster Hunter World: Iceborne on PC.
