Earlier this week Fallout 76 introduced a subscription service charging 12 a month or 100 a year for various things Bethesda shouldn’t have, along with the more reasonable inclusion of private servers. It isn’t reasonable to charge for the convenience of a box with infinite storage and a deployable fast travel tent. Even less so when some of these things do not seem to work.

Some players are reporting that their private servers aren’t private, their infinite storage boxes are swallowing their scrap, and that deploying that tent sometimes crashes the game. Bethesda have acknowledged some of these to Polygon, saying they are only affecting “a small number of users” but that yep, they’re on it. Good grief.

The Outer Worlds is not as large as a certain game of similar ilk, but inside the small package is a great deal of things to discover. One thing you should get the hang of very quickly is how to use the Tactical Time Dilation, or TTD for short. But how do you use it and what are the debuffs?

The Drifter - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Sin Vega)

Small but mighty Melbourne-based devs Powerhoof have announced The Drifter, a point and click adventure game with a pulp noir tone. It’s about a drifter trying to clear his name and track down the people who framed and (almost) murdered him. I’m kinda intrigued.

We Brits like nothing more than to talk about the weather. It is the great equaliser in queues, taxis, and the Brexit-related tea riots currently swarming the nation. So I am thrilled thrilled> to show present this latest look at Flight Simulator, a game that’s going to have so much weather that they need to build the planet to contain it all. If they didn’t, you’d need to take an umbrella into Destiny 2. Fold your seats upright and stow your babies, we’re coming in.

A is for Anticipating awesome AI. General Staff’s AI sounds smarter than a sack of weasels. In a recent blog post Ezra Sidran describes how MATE, the upcoming American Civil War game’s ersatz commander, works out which section of an enemy line it should Schwerpunkt during an attack. It identifies the opposing force that must be dealt with to achieve its assigned objective, does strength analysis of the two opposing forces, determines if the defender has anchored or unanchored flanks, calculates the slope of the attack, etc., and then calculates the Schwerpunkt after analyzing the enemy s flank positions, supporting forces and if the attacker has an unrestricted avenue of attack. .> Evidently bumble in the rough direction of victory locations , the modus operandi of many a pitched battle wargame AI, isn’t good enough for Ezra. The 127-cell honeycomb below is a fancy form of wordsearch in which every cell is used, and words can curl and zigzag but never overlap. Each hive foxer has a theme (some previous ones: sheep, mazes, The 39 Steps, and Doom). Identifying this theme is a vital part of the defoxing process. Today s puzzle is made up of 15 answers, one of which is an acronym. (more…)

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Matt Cox)

Existentialism. A word with baggage, and about it. Philosophers have deployed it to cover many different things, but they’re all concerned with the baggage of being alive. The urgent dilemma of existence, as beings without apparent purpose. The concept fascinates me. It’s what I get up for in the morning.

Based on the opening minutes of detective RPG Disco Elysium, so does ZA/UM. It’s clear from the moment your ancient reptilian brain laments your return to consciousness. “The limbed and headed machine of pain and undignified suffering is firing up again”, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

“It wants to walk the desert. Hurting. Longing. Dancing to disco music.

Ubisoft have announced delays for hack ’em up Watch Dogs Legion, zombie spin-off Rainbow Six Quarantine, and the Zelda-lookin’ Gods & Monsters, pushing their vague release windows deeper into 2020. They’re now all due in Q2 or Q3 of Ubisoft’s 2021 fiscal year, which in humanspeak means from July to December 2020.The blast of business news also included word that launch sales of Ghost Recon Breakpoint were “very disappointing” for Ubisoft. Alright everybody, tidy up those ties (full Windsor, please, we’re not Wall Street animals) and open your Funfax to fiscal 2021.
