Destiny 2

Yesterday, Bungie dropped some pretty big news on how it'll be handling new seasons in Year 3 of Destiny 2.

With four seasons planned in Year 3, each one will kick off with a new seasonal event, the first being Season of the Undying which will begin with the events of the Shadowkeep expansion.

Every player will be able to see how the universe of Destiny changes during each season, and at the end of it the collective actions of all Destiny 2 players will cause the world state to change. However, those who purchase a Season Pass will have access to a "seasonal matchmade activity" which allows them to get "that extra level of sweet gear".

Hello! It's that time of year again, when we ask if you would be kind enough to fill out a quick survey telling us about yourself.

Here it is: the 2019 Gamer Network Readership Survey

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is shared across Eurogamer and all our sister sites, like VG247, USG and Rock Paper Shotgun (so if you've already found it via one of those sites, no need to do it again). It covers a range of topics: your gaming tastes and habits, what gaming equipment you own or intend to buy, which gaming sites you read, your other leisure pastimes and so on. There are some quite personal questions in there, but you don't have to tell us anything you don't want to. The survey is anonymous and we won't be able to tell who you are by the answers you give.

Blair Witch

Disorientated and overwhelmed, I'm lost. Again.

It's not surprising, really. This place is terrifying; it's pitch black, my torch is useless (why do horror game protagonists carry such shite flashlights?), and when my canine buddy and I started this stroll, the camera panned out to show a very disquieting symbol stamped irrevocably, if surreptitiously, onto the footprint of Black Hills Forest.

Also, we're in Burkittsville, Maryland, home of the infamous Blair Witch. As anyone familiar with the movie(s) knows, she's not known for her hospitality (although to be fair, she'll cheerfully invite you in - just mind the corners).

DiRT Rally

For the next two days, Dirt Rally is available for free from the Humble Store.

All you need to do is sign up to the Humble newsletter and a copy of the racer will be added to your account for absolutely nothing. Easy-peasy. Then, you can start hurtling your way along the tight and treacherous roads of over 70 rally stages or rallycross events.

As far as freebies go it's a pretty good one. Back in 2016, the console version was on the receiving end of a Eurogamer recommendation, with Simon calling it "one of the most engaging and dramatic representations of the motorsport yet".

The mysterious Man of Medan has finally released, and like Until Dawn before it, it boasts some impressive visuals and an extensive branching narrative to kick off Supermassive's new Dark Pictures Anthology.

One of the series' main focuses is to bring more film-like cinematography to games, to bridge the gap between horror films and horror games, and perhaps even act as a entry point to fans of all things spooky.

Last month, I caught up with Robert Craig, art director at Supermassive Games, following his talk on cinematography for narrative based games at Develop Brighton. He told me about his cinematic inspirations, the challenges of lighting and 'filming' a horror game, as well as what he thinks the future of games like this will be.

Welcome to another week of Five of the Best, a series where we celebrate the overlooked parts of video games. They're the kind of things you don't pay much attention to at the time, but which spring readily to mind years later, proving just how memorable they were. So far we've had potions, hands, and dinosaurs - an eclectic bunch! - and we've enjoyed reading your suggestions as much as sharing ours. Today, then, another batch, another five. And the theme...

Shops! Oh, how many virtual registers we've rung over the years. Imagine a role-playing game without one - you can't. It would be sacrilege. You simply must visit a new shop in every town and have their wares be slightly more powerful than they were where you came from. Everyone knows that. But there are so many shops, it's often hard to remember a single one.

It's not just RPGs. I remember ogling the superbikes for sale in Road Rash and then crashing them when I eventually saved up enough money to buy them. I remember spending ages shopping for shorts and T-shirts in a knock-off GAP in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. And I've probably spent more money than I should have on costumes in Fortnite, which is hardly my fault when they sell such silly costumes, is it?!

Sunless Sea and Cultist Simulator developer Alexis Kennedy has been accused of "exploitative" and "predatory" behaviour by two women in the games industry.

Writing on Twitter, narrative designer Meg Jayanth, who worked with Kennedy as a writer on Sunless Sea, said Kennedy had "a pattern of 'befriending' young women who are entering the industry and cross[ing] professional boundaries with them".

"This is exploitative," Jayanth wrote. "I know this now because he did this to me when I approached him as a young woman looking for career advice + work.

Indie developer Finji has announced the release date for its post-apocalyptic turn-based tactics game, Overland - it'll arrive on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch on 19th September.

Overland has you take control of a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic America, scavenging for supplies, fending off bug-like creatures, and rescuing travellers (and more importantly, an excellent doggo) as you make your way across the country.

The gameplay seems like it's all about timing - grab what supplies you can, save some strangers, and get back to your car before you get overrun.

Little Nightmares

This year's Gamescom didn't have much in terms of big news (aside from pissing in Death Stranding) - but one announcement that did sneak up on everyone was Little Nightmares 2: the sequel to Tarsier Studios' spooky platformer from 2017. Coming out next year, the game looks like it's bringing plenty of additions to the original formula, including a new character, different locations, two-character gameplay, and some form of "combat"... if that's what you can call the ladle fight going on in the announcement video.

Naturally, the trailer left fans asking plenty of questions, with many assuming the two-character gameplay meant co-op, and others wondering whether the ladle-slamming combat would form a core component of the game. I pitched these questions to lead producer Lucas Roussel and senior narrative designer Dave Mervik at Gamescom, who were able to answer some (but not all) fan queries, and also give some insight into the game design decisions behind Little Nightmares 2 and its new theme of "escapism".

Is this a direct sequel to the first game, and when does it take place?

Dark Void™

The Double-A Team is a newish feature series honouring the unpretentious, mid-budget, gimmicky commercial action games that no-one seems to make any more.

Last week, Ed reminded us that Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy is basically the best game ever. Today we're taking to the skies with Dark Void.

(Oh, and we have an archive of the existing Double-A Team pieces now. Enjoy!)
