7th Sector - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

There’s not many games where you can play as a haunted robot, but 7th Sector, quietly launched today, appears to let you play the role of a literal ghost in the shell. It’s the latest from , the folks who previously freaked Alec out with the deeply Russian 35MM. It reminds me a little of Inside, only instead of hacking the meat-brains of everything that crosses your path, your little spark of life hops between robot bodies (from toys to military hardware), exposed wiring and computer systems across its cyberpunk world. Take a peek at the launch trailer for yourself.

LEFT ALIVEā„¢ - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

Left Alive – Square Enix’s stealthy reboot of the Front Mission mech-tactics series – is out now, but word on the information super-street is that it never should have been cleared for deployment. It’s not a huge shock, as footage released a couple weeks back looked very stiff, and its branching dialogues felt stilted. Worst sin of all was that the mech-on-mech battles just looked awkward and flailing. A shame, considering this had some noted talent involved, including a director from the Armored Core series, and Metal Gear’s character artist. There’s a launch trailer for the curious below, plus an alternative recommendation.

The Occupation - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

The Occupation is out now, White Paper Games’s investigative journo-thriller wrapped in the trappings of a sneaky immersive sim. Putting players in the shoes of an English journalist in 1987, a restrictive government bill that sounds remarkably like the American PATRIOT act is about to come into force. There’s only a few hours left, and the clock is ticking in real-time, but snooping around the right places might provide the evidence to derail the government’s plans. So far, responses to the game’s launch have been all over the place, but I can’t deny the launch trailer below looks rather striking.

“Under the hood, too many games are just primarily about finely-tuned reward systems. Nothing more than expertly crafted dopamine injectors which often border on, if not fully embrace their Skinner box-like qualities.”

Kris Piotrowski didn’t want to create a game like that. As the creative director and co-founder of Capybara Games, he and the team spent years working on Below, a roguelike in which you steer a tiny person to explore a labyrinthine cave. “Players have been trained to expect soft padding around their games, but if they don t pump the brakes and take it slow when they begin venturing deeper into Below, if they don t play carefully, if they don t prepare their backpack for deeper exploration, then the game eats them for breakfast.”

The problem: a lot of players didn’t like being eaten.

Space Haven - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

Colony-ship management sim Space Haven claims to be inspired by Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress and Oxygen Not Included, but the game I’m most reminded of is the eternally anarchic Space Station 13. Being developed by Bugbyte and crowdfunding on Kickstarter (though nearly 200% funded after just a few days), it’s a single-player game about building a spaceship and surviving after Earth dies. Players will decide whether their wandering little space-tribe become pirates, slavers, alien-hunters or just plain heroic sorts, and try to keep the oxygen flowing. See the trailer below.

Tecware might not be the first name you think of when it comes the bestest best gaming keyboards money can buy, but their mid-range Phantom RGB sure is a heck of a lot cheaper than a lot of its competition – just 46 / $46 for the 87-key tenkeyless version I’ve got on test here today (it’s also available as a full-size model in the US for $50), which is really quite tempting considering a lot of the best keyboards will set you back at least double that.

Surely, there must be some sort of compromise, right? Well, I’ve been using the Phantom RGB for several weeks now, and it’s arguably one of the more pleasing keyboards I’ve tested for quite some time. Here’s wot I think.

Today’s a big day in the distant future, with new competitive and cooperative modes arrived in Destiny 2 for Annual Pass holders. The ‘Season of the Drifter’ brings Gambit Prime, an advanced and end-game version of Forsaken’s PvEvP mode, along with a PvE wave survival mode which gives powerful new gear for Gambit Prime. This season’s all about our cool deadbeat crimeuncle, who’s drifted back into the solar system after centuries away to pay for our first tattoo and teach us how to blow smoke rings in that nerd Zavala’s face. He’ll even help under-geared players get up to speed with hot gear.

Big balance changes hit Bungie’s MMOFPS in today’s patch too, and new content is due for all players over the coming weeks and months.

Shakedown: Hawaii - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

Shakedown Hawaii – the much-delayed sequel to Vblank Entertainment’s grand GTA parody Retro City Rampage – is nearly here, and will be making its debut on the Epic store later this spring. The scope of the game seems to have grown a bit since I last looked. It now blends its pseudo-16-bit aesthetic with the 80s trappings of GTA: Vice City and the character-hopping story of GTA 5. In-between running around and causing the usual urban chaos, there’ll be mini-games and even some property management. Take a peek at the weirdly informercial-ish trailer below.

As a cool person, I know everything there is to know about drugs and drug paraphernalia, such as bongs and what have you. In fact, you ll often find me hanging out with my fellow dope-fiends in what we in the business call a drugs hole , where we take weed, cocaine, and the rest of the types of drugs that there are. Hey, quit hoggin all the drugs! is a phrase you ll often hear me say as I wrestle over a silver platter of that sweet, sweet sugar with a dozen Vice columnists, sending plumes of that good sherbert flying everywhere.

Drugs are my absolute favourite, I would later declare as I pat my swollen tummy, which by this point would be filled with a hot stew of illegal narcotics, but no sooner have I finished my sentence do I immediately drop dead. Dead of drugs. The Vice columnists, who I naively thought were my friends, scatter into the walls like counterculture cockroaches. And so my body rots there on the floor, alone in the drugs hole, until I m just a skeleton and the coroner can only identify me by my marijuana leaf ankle bracelets. Instead of a corpse, my grieving mother has to bury an old mannequin that they ve dressed in my uncle s pyjamas. I don t sound so cool now, do I? Not very cool at all. Don t do drugs>.
