Ambition, talent and years of dedication isn’t always enough to keep a game afloat. Promising sky-ship adventure 20,000 Leagues Above The Clouds has officially been cancelled by developers That Brain. As detailed in their final update on Itch, they had pitched the game to multiple publishers over the past few years, but no route to finance the rest of production surfaced. Most of the team have gone their separate ways, but at least they left us with one final gift – a work-in-progress demo version, first debuted at ComicCon in 2015. Take it for one last twilight cruise here – please note that a gamepad is required>.

There’s another six DLC characters headed to excellent anime fighter Dragon Ball FighterZ, and (so far), only half a Goku confirmed. Announced after last night’s Red Bull-sponsored Dragon Ball FighterZ tourney finals, Arc System Works unveiled the second FighterZ pass. The first two characters – feisty lass Videl and chunky alien lad Jiren – are launching this Thursday, January 31st. The next two will be an alternate version of Broly from the recent Dragon Ball Super film and Gogeta, an alternate Goku/Vegeta fusion. The final two are yet to be unveiled. See them in action in the trailer below.

Strange things are afoot in steamgamesland. A powerful new force has begun to show its face on Western shores. Hailing from the tiny island nation of China, a wave of intrepid indie developers are shaking off a variety of undeserved reputations and delivering a solid fifth* of the shortlist of games we consider for Unknown Pleasures, the roundup of the best new games too few people are playing.

But did any of them make the final cut? Is this the beginning of a bright new era following Steam’s recent controversies? And are any of them bloody roguelikes?

Adhering to the rule of three this week: non-dwarven fortresses, kindhearted fireflies, and China, China, CHINA. (more…)

Resident Evil 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

The Resident Evil 2 remake is a lovely thing indeed. A polished, Dead Space-esque re-imagining of a horror classic. Capcom aren’t cutting corners on support, either, as there’s a chunk of free DLC – The Ghost Survivors – due out on February 15th. It’s adding three “what if” scenarios based on three minor characters that never made it out of Raccoon City. Players will be dodging zombies as a soldier, the gun shop owner and the mayor’s daughter. Also due on same day are some chunky PSX-style costumes for Leon and Claire. Take a peek at all three characters and the outfits below.

As you may have noticed over the last year or so, I’ve tended to quite like Steelseries’ PC peripherals. Two of their mice currently occupy top spots in my best gaming mouse list, and their Arctis 7 headset is my favourite bestest best gaming headset of all time. Their top-end Apex M750 keyboard, however, won’t be making any kind of best gaming keyboard list whatsoever. I’ve tried and tried to like this keyboard, but I simply can’t get on with it. And a lot of that has to do with its weird little feet.

Metro Exodus - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

Grungy post-apocalyptic shooter Metro Exodus will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store, at least in the case of the digital release. Given that 4A’s grand rail journey across a decayed, mutated Russia was due out on February 15th – just over two weeks away – it’s a bit of a surprise for anyone who had already pre-ordered on Steam. Those with outstanding pre-orders will receive Metro Exodus as expected on their store of choice, but publisher Deep Silver are sweetening the deal for Epic Store customers a little by cutting the US dollar price of the game a bit. Annoyingly, Euro and UK prices remain the same.

Moonlighter - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Malindy Hetfeld)

>Games have, by and large made us into an insatiable, entitled bunch. We ve come to expect to be able to waltz into someone s home and take the bread right off their plate, chests in the woods were left just for us, and all wolves take their purses when they leave their den. There s a lot of stuff> in games, and always more of it than we need, especially if we start hoarding it just in case . Even though game worlds have grown, it doesn t seem to occur to us that this also means a steep rise in resources, and so we still treat a lot of our finds as priceless.

This is exactly the kind of feeling Moonlighter tries to counter. A procedurally generated dungeon means a plethora of a) monsters and b) stuff said monsters could carry, as well as c) random loot throughout. To stop you feeling as if you re just collecting stuff for the sake of collecting it, the key aspect of Moonlighter is your shop. It s where the name comes from — you re a shopkeeper moonlighting as an adventurer (or possibly an adventurer moonlighting as a shopkeeper).

Following teething problems with last weekend’s invitation-only Anthem trial period, from endless loading to laggy controls, BioWare have explain some of what went wrong and some of what they’re doing. They say the full game has already fixed some of the issues players flagged, that this demo is based on an earlier version of their cooperative sci-fi shoot-o-looter, which is good to hear. And it sounds like they’ll also fix the demo up a little for the open weekend which starts this Friday, to which we’re all invited. So, fingers crossed?
