Life is Strange 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brendan Caldwell)

Contains big spoilers.>

Monstrous. The second episode of Life Is Strange 2 came out last week, and it is barbaric. It sees the Diaz boyz trudging through snow and trying to get over winter by hanging out in a terrible cabin. Alice B and I will soon talk about the lads and their snowy escapades, like we did for our Episode 1 verdict-o-chat. But for now, I ve played through the snowy episode and all I have to say is: DONTNOD, HOW COULD YOU?

Last time on the BoC: The dwarves of the Basement discovered the concept of medicine just in time to stop the expedition s demise due to falling logs. Some immigrants arrived to help realise Lorbam s vision of an underground zoo, while Lorbam herself scraped together the fort s loose change to buy that zoo s first exhibit: a skinny hound.>

Quake II - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alec Meer)

The other week, I got my y-fronts in a bunch about how some clever fella had added raytracing to Quake II. A 22-year-old first-person shooter had effectively beaten everyone else to the punch when it came to the new*, more naturalistic form of game lighting currently only available (at least without calamitous performance) on the most recent Nvidia RTX cards. (You can do it a bit, sort of, in Battlefield V, but that’s it for now).

But I couldn’t play the bally thing, as I didn’t have an RTX graphics card. Now I do, for a bit, so I’ve been back to give 1997’s old Stroggs a 2019 paint job. Here’s a spot of compare and contrast, and quick thoughts on whether or not it was worth it.

Path of Exile - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

The tiny fraction of folks still running Windows XP or Vista will soon lose another current game, as Path Of Exile will stop working on them after an impending update. The fine free-to-play action-RPG’s developers, Grinding Gear Games, say that “only 0.1%” of their active users use either operating system, which are which are respectively 12 and 17 years old. Grinding Gear also plan to scrap the game’s old DirectX 9 version. All of this, they say, will let them better focus their time as well as let them make the game run faster

Once bitten, twice shy, is not a good aphorism for zombies. They’re not very shy at all>. In fact, some of them are positively bold. They’ve wreaked havoc with this week’s Steam Charts, taking over nearly half the entries. Which, admittedly, saves me thinking up a bunch of other stupid shit to write.

Yes, click through, read on, for the bunch of stupid shit I did> write.

If you’ve ever decided to build your own PC, you’ll know there are some bits of the upgrade process that are easier to work out than others, especially when it comes to finding the right motherboard for your new CPU. That’s a whole other kettle of fish.

I’m here to help. Below, you’ll find an in-depth guide of which motherboards are compatible with which CPUs, as well as everything you need to know about all the different types of chipsets and sockets you’ll see when buying a new motherboard. DARK SOULS™: Prepare To Die™ Edition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Peter “Durante” Thoman, the tinkerer whose unofficial tools have helped improve wonky PC versions of console games including Dark Souls and Deadly Premonition, has officially founded his own company dedicated to porting and polishing games. He’s consulted professionally on several PC ports since rising to fame and adulation, including The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel and Rez Infinite, but his new PH3 Games will make a real go of it. Thoman doesn’t name any games they’re working on now, and of course they’re only one studio, but it’s good to hear he’s out there, doing his thing.

The Room - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Matthew Castle)

I ve never understood why The Room is called The Room and not The Box. Yes, the box is in a> room, but your eyes are so drawn to this ornate toy that you don t ponder what is happening around you. And it really is a good game about boxes: the mystery of what s inside them, the thrill of prising one open and er, that s about it. But that s arguably everything that is good about boxes. (Okay, so stamping them flat for recycling is also good fun, but that would make for quite a brief puzzle game.) The important thing, is that Fireproof do both of these things very well.

SmuggleCraft - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Jay Castello)

Psst. Hey, you. Yeah, you there. Do you want to hop in a hovercraft and skate off among beautiful landscapes, racing to deliver illicit items like fresh fruit? Sure. Just keep it on the down low, yeah?

Smugglecraft is a game about being an bootlegging, debt-saddled courier in a world where travelling and trading are severely restricted, and where everything is extremely colourful and pretty to whiz by. You can take a peek at it in the trailer below.
