Two Point Hospital

Two Point Hospital is a game that makes absolutely no bones about being a nostalgia trip for anybody who played Theme Hospital in the late 90s. I should know, since it's aimed squarely at me. When Theme Hospital launched, I was nine and my parents, a doctor and a nurse, thought it was hilarious. They were delighted by it; even now, in fact, my father occasionally refers to his work as a Consultant Parasitologist as 'doctor required in inflator room'.

Theme Hospital is very fresh in my mind, in other words, and I started playing it with a sense of trepidation - was I in for a shallow reskin, or would Two Point Hospital prove to be a welcome reinvention of a childhood classic? The answer, I am glad to say, is the latter.

That's not to say Two Point Hospital isn't familiar, of course - in many ways it feels like coming back to an old classic. From the building mechanics and hiring processes to the sudden crises and tannoy announcements, this is built unashamedly on old foundations by those who laid them in the first place. The introductory level is even structured like the first level of Theme Hospital, causing me to place a near identical reception desk in its accustomed place before building the GP's office in the same corner I always do because I am nine years old and that's where the GP's office goes.

CD Projekt has revealed that Thronebreaker, its long-in-development single-player story campaign for The Witcher-themed free-to-play collectible card game Gwent, has evolved into a 30-hour RPG and will now be sold as a standalone title.

Thronebreaker - which was previously said to focus on Mever, a war-veteran queen who embarks "on a dark journey of destruction and revenge" - was initially expected to launch at the end of 2017. However, last November, CD Projekt announced a delay into 2018, citing the story campaign's increased scope for the extended development time. A brief update in April suggested that Thronebreaker was still at least six months away from release.

Four months later, and CD Projekt has finally - as part of its sexily titled H1 2018 financial results conference - offered more news about Gwent's single-player campaign, and big changes are afoot. Most notably, Thronebreaker - which is now titled Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales - has seemingly blossomed into a full-scale RPG, with a campaign of around 30 hours, full of choices and consequences, albeit one where actions are still decided by the outcome of Gwent games.

The Sinking City Remastered

Developer Frogwares has - following a run of evocative if not-entirely-informative cinematic trailers - released the first proper gameplay footage of its Lovecraft-inspired open-world detective horror, The Sinking City, walking through an early investigation mission.

The Sinking City follows the adventures of troubled private investigator Charles W. Reed, as he explores the mysterious goings-on in Oakmont, Massachusetts. We've known for a while that exploration and detective work are a major focus of The Sinking City (as was the case in developer Frogwares previous, frequently enjoyable Sherlock Holmes series), but we've yet to see how this might play out in-game.

That's all changed with the arrival of Frogwares' latest developer video, which walks viewers through the first part of an early, smaller-scale side-quest, titled Silence is Golden. Here, players are set the challenge of tracking down a mysterious figure that the local librarian, Joy, believes has been breaking into her home.

Spelunky 2 is heading to PC and PS4, don't you know, and that's pretty much all we've be told since the game was revealed back in October last year. Now, however, we know a little more - thanks to words and a brand-new gameplay trailer, courtesy of Spelunky creator Derek Yu.

Spelunky 2, which is being developed by Yu's studio Mossmouth, alongside Blitworks, follows the adventures of Ana Spelunky, daughter of the first game's protagonist, and her pals - which include, for reasons unexplained, a very spritely Sloth. In an interview with the PlayStation Blog, Yu explained that Spelunky 2 has been specifically designed to so that series fans can "jump in [to the sequel] and feel like they're playing a continuation, both storywise and mechanically".

To that end, the rogue-like, procedural platform core of the first game remains (and it's still "very challenging", according to Yu), but the sequel ushers in many new features, "that, when added up, really make the game feel different". For starters, alongside the expected new items, areas, monsters, and traps, Spelunky 2 introduces rideable mounts and online multiplayer.

The embargo lifts today on video capture of Battlefield 5's beautiful new Rotterdam map, which looks all the better when rendered in RTX - Nvidia's brand new ray tracing technology for its upcoming 20-series cards. We had the chance to go hands-on with an RTX-enabled version of the game, and to talk directly with the graphics engineers responsible. How does ray tracing work? What are its limitations? And with performance such a hot topic surrounding RTX titles, what are DICE's plans for future optimisation and further features?

Performance is under the microscope with regards RTX, in particular with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which had noticeable frame-rate issues in the behind-the-scenes demo we played. However, what we do have to understand is that it is early days for RTX development. Nvidia seeded developers with Titan V hardware earlier this year - but this lacks specific ray tracing acceleration. Cards can be used in parallel to offer up something close to actual RTX performance but the bottom line is this: DICE had just two weeks with final hardware, which was dubbed simply as an 'Nvidia Graphics Device' in the device manager. In short, the developer wasn't even sure which RTX device they were working with. And as we shall discover, there's still plenty of work to do before launch in optimising an already impressive showing.

Ray tracing as it stands in the demo is used to render Battlefield 5's specular reflections - replacing 'fake' rasterisation approximations including standard cube maps and screen-space reflections. The ray tracing lines up perfectly with other lit sources in the world, including area lights, the sun or sky lighting. To get a sense of what RT reflections do differently and better, it's good to point out the limitations of the systems that it replaces.

SOULCALIBUR VI

Soulcalibur 6 introduces a brand new character into the series called Azwel.

The self-proclaimed leader of humanity uses a weapon called Palindrome, which grants him the ability to create weapons out of thin air, and employs a fighting style called "practical application of martial philosophy and theory", which could do with a snappier name if Azwel wants it to catch on.

The video, below, shows Azwel in action. (Be prepared for one hell of an evil villain maniacal laugh at the end.)

Nintendo has gained a bit of a reputation for its strict copyright policy. In the last few months alone, it filed several lawsuits against emulation sites, and is believed to have indirectly pressured ROM site EmuParadise into shutting down. Now, Nintendo has gone after a new target: 11-year old fan game creator, Pok mon Essentials.

The kit in question, a role-playing game maker, allowed users to design their own Pok mon adventures. According to Kotaku, the site used "full tilesets, maps, music, and sprites" from the official games, as well as all the classic mechanics required to catch and collect Pok mon. It was founded in 2007, and was used to create popular fan game Pok mon Uranium, which was shut down two years ago following a reported copyright notice from Nintendo. It was perhaps something of an inevitability, therefore, that Nintendo would target the root of the problem.

A member from forum Pok Community, Marin, announced they could no longer host the software on the community forums, stating "the Pok mon Essentials wikia and all downloads for it have been taken down due to a copyright claim by Nintendo of America". Apparently, Pok mon Essentials will no longer be "hosted or distributed on Pok Community". According to The Verge, the last known proprieter of the Pok mon Essentials, Maruno, has confirmed the downloads have been deleted, while the Fandom that hosted the wiki page has also stated Nintendo took action against it. Despite the bad news, Marin urged Pok mon fans not to "freak out about the claim," adding "there's no reason to get angry with Nintendo or anyone else involved".

Ever since Destiny launched back in 2014, fans have wondered what the Darkness actually is.

The Darkness is the Destiny universe's overarching threat, a mysterious force opposed to the Light. The Light, which grants the Guardians their super powers and gives the Ghosts, the little floating robot things that work with the player throughout the game, life, originates from the Traveler. The Darkness, it seems, works in opposition to the Traveler, which made some grand last stand on earth as it fended off this threat years before the first game begins.

Destiny 2's campaign suggested the Darkness was finally on the march via a post-credits scene which showed mysterious pyramid ships heading earth's way. And then the Warmind DLC revealed the Worm gods, the scaly deity species which billions of years ago gave the Hive their power, commune with and are in turn sort-of disciples of the Darkness.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

Despite polarising its fanbase with a episodic release structure, Hitman 2016 was a huge favourite of mine. I loved the intricate detail of the environments and the freedom this gave you to experiment with your surroundings. That coupled with the unpredictable nature of the gameplay meant that pulling off elaborate hits was always heart-pounding stuff, especially when your well laid plans crumbled before your very eyes!

Most of all though I loved the elaborate challenges you could take on in order to dispatch your primary targets in weird and wonderful ways.

To that end, I decided to attempt something rather special during my hands-on time with Hitman 2 at this years Gamescom. The Chilli Immolation Challenge is a unique kill that (as far as I'm aware) has never before been captured on video and you can watch me attempt it in the player below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 introduces a new system to the shooter series called Signature Weapons.

These are cosmetic variations of the base weapons in the game, Activision said in a blog post, and they come with their own challenges and rewards.

The publisher stressed the Signature Weapons do not have any game-altering stats, so perform exactly like their base weapon counterparts. They're just super flashy versions of those base weapons.
