Genghis Khan once demanded two Tug (“Spirit”) Banners: One made of white horse hide for times of peace, and another of black horse hide for all the other times. Upon his death, his soul was alleged to live on in the black banner. This is how the feared “Universal Ruler” of the Mongol Empire lived – and died.

At his birth in 1162 CE, legends tell of a boy clenching a blood clot at birth – a sign that he would one day be a great leader. Born Borjigin Temujin (the later translates as “blacksmith”), scholars say he was named after a captured tribal chieftain as a taunt. At 9, he was betrothed to marry Borte, the daughter of the neighboring Konkirat tribe’s chieftain. Within a year, the boy would be ostracized by his tribe, his father assassinated by the Tartars and by 16 he would kill his half-brother. All the while, his mother Hoelun coached Temujin in statesmanship, influencing allies and controlling enemies.

Temujin began amassing troops in his 20s. It started with his brothers as a fighting unit going on raids of their own. He would gradually build his army until it became a feared 20,000-strong force. Next, he'd go on to defeat the Tartars and exhibit the brutality he would become known for in avenging his father. It didn’t stop there. He ordered the death of every Tartar male above three feet tall.

By 1206, Temujin united the tribes of the steppes. This is when he received the title 'Genghis Khan'. He then proceeded to issue the Yassa, a collection of divine laws governing everything from property to marriage to civil service designating its execution to his second son, Chagatai.

The Yassa would do away with the common causes of tribal warfare, banning the kidnapping of wives and doing away with inherited titles. It also granted religious tolerance to his followers (as long as they recognized Genghis Khan as the final authority).

As he lay dying in his 60s, it has been said that Genghis Khan asked to be buried in secret with his six cats, hoping their purrs would guide him to the afterlife. Legend has it that the funeral escort killed anyone and anything that crossed their path to conceal his final resting place. After the tomb was completed, soldiers had 1,000 horses trample any evidence of his burial site and to this day, it remains hidden. Khan’s black spirit flag continued waving as his third son, Ogedei, would inherit and expand an empire stretching from the Caspian Sea in the west all the way to the East Sea.



UNIQUE UNIT: KESHIG
The Mongolian Keshig (loosely translated as “The Favored” or “The Blessed”) were the elite imperial guard of the Great Khan. Split up into daytime (Torguud) and nighttime (Khevtuul) based troops, these mounted warriors were originally comprised of Genghis Khan’s most loyal fighters. The Keshig were well-equipped, using their composite bows and mobility to harry opponents from a distance. As horse archers, they were second to none. The Keshig served as bodyguards and they are the perfect escort for slower-moving civilian and support units – and can get them to travel at a faster movement rate.


 
UNIQUE IMPROVEMENT: ORDU
“Ordu” means “palace tent.” However, an ordu was something much more than just a simple tent—it was the center of the tribe for the nomadic Mongolians.

An ordu served as the mobile headquarters and main encampment for the Khan and his warriors. Though built for travel, it had style, from simple decorations to carefully sewn patterns. The ordu moved with the Khan and his warriors as they went on campaign, ensuring they always felt at home no matter where they traveled. That’s why ordus grant a movement bonus to light and heavy cavalry.

UNIQUE CIV ABILITY: ÖRTOO
Because the Mongol hordes were so quick, the messengers had to be even quicker. The Örtoo served as a supply route system widely used by Genghis Khan and the Khans to follow him. These relay stations provided support for messengers to help speed up the delivery of intelligence information. Think of it as a combat-focused trading route, so take advantage of the Örtoo ability to get a boost in Combat Strength and Diplomatic Visibility over your opponents.

UNIQUE LEADER ABILITY: MONGOL HORDE
Genghis Khan’s feared Mongol Horde – and his reputation for utterly destroying enemies – made him legend. With Genghis Khan’s unique ability, all Mongolian cavalry class units gain a combat bonus and a chance to capture enemy cavalry class units to further grow his horde.

Genghis Khan returns in Civilization VI: Rise and Fall. There are a total of nine leaders and eight civilizations coming when the expansion releases on February 8, 2018.

We're sorry to announce a little delay in the arrival of dedicated servers in Northgard...

Dedicated Servers

We've had some partnership issues that forced us to postpone the release of this crucial feature to January. We absolutely understand your frustration regarding the problems that poor internet connection and leaving hosts can generate.

Please be sure that our decision on this matter is only motivated by the urge to give you the best multiplayer experience. We'll spend this time to set up an infrastructure that will allow us to have a very large number of Northgard instances running at the same time.

December Update

This problem will not prevent us from delivering you your monthly update :-)

Changes on Tech Trees:

For all clans:
  • We’ve merge Militia & Defense, giving Defense Strategy: +20% Attack for Villagers & +20% defense for Watch Towers
  • Feeling Safe has been moved and is now replaced by MonsterSlayer: +30% attack power against Mystical Creatures - Draugar, Valkyries, Giants, Giant Hero (Blainn), Wyvern.
  • Sharp Weapons has been replaced by Military Strategy: Military units gains +5% attack for each type of friendly military units in the area.
  • Trading (or Bartering) is now necessary to build a Lighthouse
  • Erudition buff for Loremaster is now by 20% (previously 10%)



Clan of the Goat:
  • Barricade’s bonus now goes from 30% to 20%
  • Food Trade: Trading food increases your trading routes' income by 50% (previously 100%)

Clan of the Bear:
Shield Master’s bonus goes from 20% resistance to 15% and the tech changes place

Clan of the Raven:
Fame 200 now grants +3 Villagers and +3 Max Population

Clan of the Boar:
  • The menders now grant +1 Lore instead of +2
  • Bartering now grants:
    • +1 Krowns per 8 population (rounded down)
    • The ability to trade with Neutrals
    • Unlocks the Lighthouse (see the Trade Victory Section)
  • Handiwork takes the place of Nature Gift (which has disappeared)
  • Handiwork has been replaced by Lay of the Land: -30% chance of being attacked by Wolves, Draugar or Valkyries

  • When creating a multiplayer game, you can now choose the difficulty of each AI and the hostility of Northgard separately
  • When creating a FFA game with AI players, the AI will now be placed on Northgard randomly (in previous versions, the AIs were always grouped)
  • We changed the way victory is displayed when winning in team (the game now congratulates every member of the winning team)!
  • We changed the way the ESC button works. ESC will close each active window and only then open the menu.
  • When someone is kicked from a lobby, they won’t have the possibility to re-enter the lobby
  • When someone leaves a game, they will be replaced by an AI after 5 minutes. If the player reconnects, he will take back control of his clan. The AI difficulty is scaled on the hostility of Northgard.
  • We changed a few more things in the way disease works:
    • When a unit gets sick, it will lose 90% of its max health (if a unit has 100hp, it will lose 90hp).
    • The player can heal a unit during the disease. We added the fact that the unit will remain sick if the food or wood production remains < 0.
  • It is no longer possible for a healer/mender’s hut to heal a unit already healed by another healer/mender’s hut.
  • We upped the damages of the AxeThrowers by 20%
  • Upgrading military buildings will now only grant a +5% attack power bonus (10% previously)


    Trade Victory



    We completely changed the way the trade victory worked:
    • To win a Trade victory, you now need to build a Lighthouse
    • The Lighthouse can be built as an extension to a Longship Dock or a Harbor
    • This new building extension will allow you to gain access to “Great Trade Routes”
    • These will allow you to send Kröwns to various locations and gain Commercial Influence:
      • Sending Kröwns to your homeland on the continent will grant you +5 in Commercial Influence for -5 Kröwns
      • Sending Kröwns to Miklagard will grant you +10 in Commercial Influence in exchange for -20 Krowns
      • Sending Kröwns to Vinland will grant you +15 in Commercial Influence in exchange for -40 Krowns

    • The message “you’re under attack” will now always disappear once this attack is over
    • When a player loses a game in multiplayer, he is no longer allowed to pause it anymore. This also generated a bug where the “resume the game” button didn’t work.
    • There was an issue in the way ressources incomes were displayed (the addition of various resources didn’t correspond to the flow). It is now fixed
    • We fixed most “Zone is null” errors
    • The map size didn’t worked as intended. You will now be able to play on very large map with any number of players
    • The achievement "Iron Miner" now requires to mine 60 iron (previously 150)

Mindball Play 0.18.2 has now been released and the track Xmas Ballroom has returned!

In true Holiday spirit we've brought back the Xmas Ballroom track joint with a seasonal ball skin. The new laser effects visualized on our social media accounts are also included in the update, together with some sparks upon collision with solid objects. Additionally some visual customization is included to ensure that our graphics look crisp for some holiday gaming. Happy holidays everyone //The Mindball Team
