After last year releasing a revamped version of Battlezone, the 1998 RTS-FPS hybrid where spacelords join the battlefield themselves to drive vehicles and scamper about, Rebellion are now focusing on its sequel. Today they announced Battlezone Combat Commander, a remastered version of 1999’s Battlezone II. Coming some time in 2018, it’ll boast a similar amount of fancying-up as the Battlezone 98 Redux though with a less clumsy (but more confusing) name. Check out the announcement trailer: (more…)

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.>
I m genuinely sad that Chivalry with magic didn t excite enough people for Mirage: Arcane Warfare to have an active player base. Despite giving the game away for free for a brief period, the servers for this multiplayer stab n spell em up are still empty. It s a shame, because the game is great for all the same reasons that Chivalry is – with magic attacks that add to that experience rather than detracting from it. (more…)

The CEO of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, has spoken out about the future of Deus Ex. At the start of this year, Eurogamer reported that we shouldn’t expect a new Deus Ex game anytime soon – and they’re right, though we should get one eventually. It simply isn’t Deus Ex’s turn yet, with the studio first focusing on other projects such as the next Tomb Raider and an Avengers game.
Matsuda explained all this in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, where he also talked about Final Fantasy’s anime spin off, the studio’s approach to the Eastern and Western markets, as well as augmented and virtual reality.

While my trucking dreams took me to the big skies of American Truck Simulator, some still follow roads closer to home. Euro Truck Simulator 2 will revisit Italy in its next paid add-on, expanding and revamping the country. That will launch next Tuesday, the 5th of December, developers SS Software announced today. Perhaps, as our country tries to hack itself off Europe (accidentally severing several fingers with a Stanley knife and pulping its toes with a fumbled hammer in the process), Europe will seem fancier and I’ll soon find myself dreaming of these lands. For now, have a look at Italia in this trailer:

If you’re kobold enough to catacome down into the depths of Hearthstone’s latest 135 card expansion, you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s catacombing out on December 7th. The Kobolds & Catacombs expansion will bring nine new class legendary weapons and cards bearing a new Recruit keyword, but that’s kobold news. I cata wait to tell you about the new stuff we’ve learned since we last posted about it.

Firm-but-fair fisticuffs game Tekken 7 gets a new character tomorrow in the form of Geese Howard. Who s that? He s the blonde villain from another fighting game series, Fatal Fury, which was popular on ye olde Neo Geo in Japan. Let s learn more about him by checking the ever-useful Tekken wiki. Ah yes, let s see.
“Likes: Himself.”
“Dislikes: People who stop his ambitions.”
He sounds nice. (more…)

In the new trailer for Blazing Legion: Ignition, an upcoming first-person shooter with mechs stomping around on the ground and whizzing through the air, the action is so fast and colourful that YouTube’s video compression runs all the jet trails and bullet blasts into a big ol’ smear. This is excellent. This is my new test for any shooter claiming “bullet hell” attributes: can it overwhelm YouTube? Give me colours and give me speed. Blazing Legion seems to deliver those nicely, wrapped in smooth tunes and a story about our top gun pilot and her past. Have a look: (more…)

This week’s Premature Evaluation sees our early access conscript, Fraser, flung into the nightmarish Eastern Front of World War I in multiplayer FPS Tannenberg. It’s a companion game to Verdun, but the weather is worse and and there are a lot more angry men with guns. >
A man sprints out of the woods just in front of my hiding spot, screaming as he jumps over fallen trees. Before I can even figure out if he’s friend or foe, there s a flash and a scream as he’s sent hurtling through the air, the latest victim of the enemy s mortar. He lands in the mud right next to me, where he moans and gurgles as the life slowly seeps out of him. It s a noise I ve become very familiar with in Tannenberg.

Crikey! Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, the unforgiving multiplayer shooter from the Red Orchestra devs, has gone down under for its first major update – and come back with an Australian fighting force that’s equipped with new weapons and vehicles. The fighting still takes place in Vietnam – it’s in the name, innit – but the Bushranger update also brings 3 new maps for the new soldiers to shoot their way around, as well positional voice chat and more.
(There won’t be any more lazy verbal Aussie appropriation in this post, promise.)

Hey, you: do you make video games? If so, nice. Thanks. Thank you for the video games. Keep it up. A follow-up: perhaps consider submitting your game for inclusion in the Leftfield Collection at EGX Rezzed in London next year. Rezzed is a games show organised by our adoptive corporate parent Gamer Network, and Leftfield is the best bit. It brings together, and I quote, “independently developed games and game-like projects that often defy genre classification.” Perhaps your game might fit? It’s free to submit games to the Leftfield so mebbe give it a think. (more…)
