Half-Life 2 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (John Walker)

There are few actors who have imbued a game character with such an emotional depth as Robert Guillaume’s voice work for Half-Life 2’s Eli Vance. The father of Alyx, and of course the man behind Benson in Soap, died last night after suffering with prostate cancer, aged 89. (more…)

airport

This week’s Premature Evaluation sees Fraser putting on his nicest suit and running an Airport in tycoon and management game Airport CEO [official site]. Please don’t arrange any flights until he’s finished. RPS does not endorse his airport.>

I spend an inordinate amount of time in airports, and I loathe them with every fibre of my being. The huge crowds of people willing to sacrifice their humanity if it means getting on their flight in time; the constant, unrelenting announcements and security warnings; the forty different meaningless passenger classes; the endless, illogical queues — I m getting a stress headache just thinking about it.

So of course I ve decided to make my own airport in Airport CEO. I mean, how could anything I run be worse than one of these travel prisons? Frankly, I expect to do such a great job that I m wondering if this Premature Evaluation is even going to be interesting to read. Sorry.

"You are in the pain hotel...and it's time to... *check out*"

Destiny 2 is out on PC today, bringing Bungie s space killin to even more folks. Matt and Brendan have been zapping aliens and robots on the sly (aka the PS4), but they ve had different reactions to the story and dialogue of this first-person blockbuster. Matt is fond of space wizardry but Brendan is gagging at each and every line. What better place to have a constructive chat about this disagreement than The Internet?>

Brendan: Hello Matthew. I m using your full name because I m preparing to be a condescending spoilsport who will tell you to stop liking the thing you are currently liking. Let s go!

Matt: Hello Brendy! I m being more colloquial because I m hoping to inject some joy into your cold, dead heart. (more…)

Destiny 2

It’s 6pm over here in ol’ Blighty, which means that according to this handy launch-times map Bungie’s zeitgeist-wrangling online FPS Destiny 2 is available to play on PC. For those who preordered and preloaded, your copy of the game should be unlocking just about now,> assuming the servers haven’t burst into flames, of course.

If you’ve not preordered and are still wondering what all the fuss is about, check out the PC launch trailer after the jump, and see the game described by many Destiny fans as “It’s way better now!” and by some of the original game’s detractors as “Actually good this time.”. High praise, for sure.

Hitman GOTY

More Hitman is always nice, especially now that Io Interactive are a fully independent studio, no longer shackled to monolithic publishers. Starting their journey into independence, Io are reconfirming their ownership of the license by re-launching 2016’s once-episodic murder simulator as the Game Of The Year edition, detailed here, adding a slew of new content including missions and escalation contracts.

Among the juicy extras will be a re-run of the one-time Elusive Targets for anyone who missed them first time round. Hitman will officially be returning on November 7th, and while a full retail price hasn’t been announced, existing owners of the game will be able to upgrade to the new edition for $20. Check out the trailer as well as some extra details after the jump.

Stronghold HD (2012) - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Dominic Tarason)

Stronghold HD

We might be drowning in big-budget games this month, but GOG reckon that you should spare a thought for the venerable old gems that brought us here. They’re doing another of their giveaways today, and this time it’s a double: Castle building/besieging RTS Stronghold HD, and A.D. 2044, a Polish point-and-click adventure from 1996 that I must admit no familiarity with.

I know! Let’s make this an adventure in international videogame history: Come join me as we read through A.D. 2044’s plot synopsis after the jump, after a little look at Stronghold HD.

plunkheader

This is Playstyle Royale, where I head into Playerunknown s Battlegrounds and try to win my chicken dinner while adhering to arbitrary rules. This week s rule comes from Balnakor, who suggested this in the comments from last time:

Conflict avoidance: loot up how you like, but you can t use any weapon apart from smoke/stun grenades until you are in the last two.

For added tension, I m only giving myself five attempts. It s going to be a tough one.

injusticesupergirl

Injustice 2 is a game in which superheroes punch each other so hard that sometimes they’re sent flying into orbit, or back in time where they clip the nose of the Great Sphinx of Giza. Turns out merry speedster The Flash is a TIME VANDAL.

Although I don’t particularly care for its Snydery grimdark take on DC, I have been enjoying Injustice 2 a lot. It lives on my PS4 and I wasn’t sure if it’d ever come to PC, but Warner and developers NetherRealm (they of Mortal Kombat) send word that a port is on its way. And not only is it set to arrive in this very season of autumn, an open beta will begin tomorrow on Steam. Cracking news.

"Come in Admiral! I've encountered some kind of giant biscuit."

Exploding time. I found the controls of roguelite sci-fi dogfighter Everspace difficult to absorb but respected the combat-heavy feeling of it. Fwooping from star to star and blasting everything as my weapons overheated and hull cracked. It s got a new expansion today, called Encounters, which adds a new ship, weapons, abilities and tools, as well as new space stations and planets to orbit, like the Okkar Homeworld. They re the space lizards who like to kill you on a regular basis. Perhaps you d like to visit them. (more…)

Agh! Oh it's you

Today the news troughs are suspiciously empty. The cowards of industry know that Destiny 2 is coming out later today and they have, perhaps wisely, scuttled into their development holes to formulate a coping strategy for the first true tempest of the blockbuster season. It s the newscalm before the Destostorm.

To alleviate the stress of having no articles to post, I’m playing Boo! It s a puzzle game about dipping pumpkins in paint. (more…)
