Football Manager 2017 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alec Meer)

Two of us know far too much about football. Two of us know far too little. Together, we will create chaos for once-proud Premiership club Leicester City.

Here’s the deal. In Football Manager Touch 2017 (chosen over the full-fat version as it’ll move quicker), we take control of Leicester for the 2016-2017 season, which is effectively working just a few months behind what’s actually happening now. That being that Leicester won the title last year, but are having a hard time this year. You ain’t seen nothing yet, lads. Every quarter of a season, whoever’s in charge passes their savegame onto the next player. As we’re alternating between people who know what they’re doing and people who don’t, this is going to involve quite some degree of calamity and, hopefully, salvation.

It starts with me. Graham, Pip and Adam will follow. Adam has observed that if the club is not in the relegation zone when the save reaches him, he will consider it a great victory. Oh dear. … [visit site to read more]

Dauntless

The owl bear monster at the start of the new Dauntless [official site] trailer reminds other people of Trico from The Last Guardian right? It’s not just me? Also when they talk about Ramsgate they mean like a mythical place on the Shattered Isles rather than the place just along the coast from Margate in Kent, yeah? Let’s catch up with the alpha gameplay trailer as I try to figure this nonsense out. … [visit site to read more]

Tom Clancy’s The Division™ - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Samuel Horti)

The Division outside banner

There’s a platter of free stuff going at Ubisoft this weekend. Post-apocalyptic online shooter The Division [official site], winter sports sim Steep [official site] and two-wheeling platformer Trials Fusion [official site] all available to play for diddly squat until 8pm on Sunday (UK time) through Ubisoft’s Uplay client.

Now, I know some of these games are getting long in the tooth but there are probably some of you out there that, like me, have been meaning to play at least one of them but have never got round to it.

Caves of Qud - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Adam Smith)

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.>

Look, the way this normally works is that I ask “have you played [name of game]?” and then I sort of assume that you haven’t and tell you why you should. It’s a little different this time though because even though I have> played Caves of Qud [official site], I’m hoping you lot can tell me why I should go back and play it again, because I’ve barely managed to scratch the surface. … [visit site to read more]

Jalopy - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Philippa Warr)

Priscillaaaaaaaaaaa!

I’l admit I entirely forgot that Jalopy [official site] getting a Turkey update meant the country and not, e.g. the bird. I was conjuring up all kinds of adventures I could take a turkey on while we played the roadtrip ‘n’ car maintenance adventure. Just me and my feathery friend, the wind in our wings, the radio set to some bangin’ choons, the turkey in charge of map reading… The turkey is called Priscilla and has replaced Jalopy’s Uncle character in my head.

In the real version of this update that doesn’t involve Priscilla and me Thelma and Louising it off a cliff or doing Carpool Karaoke, the Turkey update has added that country as a new environment/route in the game. Behold the trailer! … [visit site to read more]

Siltbreaker!

Ooooh! The first part of Dota 2 [official site] co-op campaign, Siltbreaker, has arrived! Act 1: The Sands of Fate is the game’s first co-op multiplayer campaign (unless you count crowding round a screen with a friend to take turns playing Warcraft 3 or something). … [visit site to read more]

I said I wasn’t going to finish Prey, because I didn’t want a good thing to end. Well, stick some leopard print heels on me and call me Theresa May: I u-turned. Couldn’t resist the siren call of more time on Talos. Which perhaps begs the question: what about that divisive ending, then?

SPOILERS below, inevitably. … [visit site to read more]

Mare Nostrum - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Tim Stone)

Mare Nostrum, the galley warfare wargame currently in production at Turnopia, shouldn’t have any trouble eclipsing the competition. To my knowledge, in the forty or so years since home computing and tactical gaming first cuddled up, ancient naval aggro has inspired only one title and that title is probably best forgotten. … [visit site to read more]

Mate, I don’t know what’s going on in the world. Have you seen? Have you heard? Did you wake up, rub your eyes, and say “Nahhh” then “Wuhhh?” followed by “Ohhh?” It’s real, it really is real: Bubsy the bobcat is back, baby! The rubbish platformer series will return this autumn with the all-new Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back [official site], because 2017 is the year we deserve. I’m being a mite over-dramatic. Bubsy was of course perfected by the Arcane Kids with Bubsy 3D: Bubsy Visits the James Turrell Retrospective but I suppose someone thinks they can live up to that golden standard. … [visit site to read more]

Mirage: Arcane Warfare

I’ve sunk a fair chunk of time into Mirage: Arcane Warfare [official site], the first-person melee brawler in which you can both fling magic spells and lop a man’s head off with a giant axe, and I’ve enjoyed nearly all of it. But it does have one flaw: there just aren’t enough players. You’ll often run into empty servers, and those that are full contain a mix of every skill level. That can make it difficult for new players to settle in.

Well, the game is currently free to try on Steam, and will be until 9pm on Sunday (1pm Pacific). Player numbers are already picking up, which is promising.
