Death Road to Canada - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Graham Smith)

Last week I asked you: which of the games I had installed should I play and write about? The overwhelming winner was Death Road To Canada [official site], a zombie shooter that I’ve been listening to RPS staff talk about for months but that we’ve never written a feature about before.>

Things were going pretty well. We had wheels, fuel, food, our health and morale was high. A recent scavenging trip had turned up a shotgun with plenty of shells, which was my first experience at killing the undead with something other than frying pans and wrenches. Perhaps things would have continued to go well, if Gina, our leader – me, in other words – hadn’t decided it was a good idea to try to steal from one of the traders at a rest stop.

You’d think I should have learned that spring follows winter but no, spring is almost here and here I am surprised again. GOG are so keen for spring to arrive that they’ve launched a spring sale a fortnight early (astronomical seasons rule ok). Over 500 games are on sale from today through to Sunday, including some real crackers. GOG don’t just do old games these days, remember. It’s a good’un with good games at good prices. I’ve picked out a few from the megalist myself but please do share your personal picks in the comments too. … [visit site to read more]

Satellite Reign - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Brendan Caldwell)

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.>

I never completed Satellite Reign, because fellow journo and one-time board game co-conspirator Matt Lees told me something that completely demolished my enjoyment of it. I won t tell you that thing unless you come with me below the line, because I want you to know that this game is pretty good and you shouldn t listen to me. It s an isometric neon haze of cool cyberpunk freedom fighters who will get in and out of scrapes in supreme style, in a vast city that looks just as cool as anything Deus Ex has thought up. I recommend it. That s all. You can go now. … [visit site to read more]

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Fraser Brown)

Among the many things that might wake you up in the morning coffee, cigarettes, aggressive thrash metal nothing really comes close to being chased by a towering Space Marine Titan, spewing out fire and bullets in a wanton display of horrifying aggression as pitiful Orks scatter and flee. Dawn of War 3 s [official site] invigorating multiplayer is like a shot of adrenaline, blood-pumping, loud and messy.

Based on my time with it, there s a great deal going on in Relic s latest foray into the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40K. It s not entirely unlike attempting to play the previous two Dawn of Wars at the same time, a mashup of each game s best bits, but with more stuff drawn from both the tabletop games and even other genres. … [visit site to read more]

Tom Clancy's Ghost ReconĀ® Wildlands - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

With Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands [official site] unlocking tonight, here’s a newsblast rounding up a few odds and ends:

1) We shan’t tell you Wot We Think at launch, as we only received code today2) We will aim (aim, like aiming a gun) to have something up as soon as possible and a review by the end of the week3) Pre-loading is now live for pre-orderers (never pre-order etc.) but when it actually unlocks and launches is determined by where you buy it4) Nvidia are blabbing about their fancy Nvidia-exclusive graphics effects5) Yup, patches have fixed some problems since the beta6) The government of Bolivia have officially protested Wildlands’ portrayal of their country as lawless and ruled by druglords

Onwards to details! … [visit site to read more]

Steel Division: Normandy 44 - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Adam Smith)

I can appreciate a carefully crafted digital tank rolling into combat as much as the next war game fan, but there are few things I enjoy more than a visible front line. Not the actual troops huddling beneath hedgerows as explosions tear up the dirt, but an actual line, drawn onto the map, bendling, flexing and breaking as the battle plays out.

Steel Division [official site] has authentically modeled units and detailed rules of engagement controlling their clashes, but it’s the front line that got me all excited when I saw a demo last week at GDC.

About a year ago, I bought myself a HTC Vive. Since then, it’s gathered a fair bit of dust. I swear, it’s not that I’m a VR skeptic, so much as someone without a whole lot of space to play with who prefers being able to go to the toilet at night without> tripping over what I’m going to call ‘a Maplin’ of expensive cabling. Of late though, I’ve been feeling the urge to go back in, largely I must say inspired by stuff I can’t actually play, like the intro to I Expect You To Die (Vive version is coming, I can’t be arsed with Revive) and watching the new Psychonauts and Arkham VR experiences from the PSVR.

So, I did. And I had some fun playing around with some new stuff.

My RPG based dreams though feel further away than ever.

Curious Expedition - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

Ace adventure ’em up The Curious Expedition [official site] has added the Arctic in a big free update, full of new places to explore, new mysteries to uncover, new treasures to find, and more awful ways to die. Developers Maschinen-Mensch released the Arctic Expanse update on Friday with a bucket of tweaks too, which is grand considering The Curious Expedition was already our favourite roguelike of 2016. … [visit site to read more]

Fire Pro Wrestling World - contact@rockpapershotgun.com (Alice O'Connor)

It’s no secret that one favourite activity in the RPS treehouse is chokeslamming and powerbombing each other. I’m delighted, then, to see Spike Chunsoft announce a revival of the long-running Fire Pro Wrestling series – and this time on PC too. I’ve not played its console iterations but I have heard good things about proper, serious wrestling simulation and welcome more of that. Wrestling on PC is dominated by 2K’s so-so WWE games so, even if the new Fire Pro Wrestling World [official site] is unattractive (and it is!), it’d be nice to have a serious competitor for the belt. … [visit site to read more]

Patience is key when sniping so if you aren’t prepared for Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 [official site] to be delayed time after time then it’s probably not a game for you anyway. CI Games today announced they’re bumping the stealthy first-person shooter back from April 4th to April 25th. Why the delay? Because they want to make the game better, obvs. Following feedback from their beta test, they’ve decided three weeks of tweaking would do it good. In the meantime, hey, Sniper Elite 4 is quite fun and only came out a few weeks back. … [visit site to read more]
